The BITSAT exam is conducted by BITS Pilani in CBT/Online mode. It consists of four sections: each covering one subject, with the exception of Part III, which includes two subjects. The subjects in BITSAT 2026 are Physics, Chemistry, English, Logical Reasoning, and Maths/Biology.

  • Mathematics/Biology carry 40 questions, the highest in the BITSAT question paper.
  • English carries the lowest weightage of only 10 questions.
  • You have a total of 180 minutes (3 hours) for the BITSAT question paper.
  • Those who attempt all 130 questions are eligible for bonus questions if time permits.

BITSAT marking scheme allows you to score a maximum of 390 marks from 130 questions. You can score an extra 36 marks by attempting 12 bonus questions in BITSAT 2026.

Ques. How no sectional time limit changes attempt order?

Ans. With no sectional time limit in BITSAT, you are allowed to attempt sections in any order. Because of this flexibility, you can:

  • Prioritise strong or scoring sections in BITSAT 2026.
  • Skip difficult/time-consuming questions and review later.
  • Avoid getting stuck in any section early.

You are advised to solve English/LR early, as the sections are considered easy and score highly.

Ques. Why are English and LR questions considered score boosters?

Ans. English and logical reasoning questions are considered score boosters because of the following reasons.

  • English and LR questions are less time-consuming than PCM/B questions.
  • Difficulty level of English and LR questions is easy-moderate.
  • These questions require less time for high accuracy, boosting overall score in BITSAT.

BITSAT Sectional Weightage and Difficulty Level

Most students on Reddit noted that they found the BITSAT difficult last year. Some students indicated that BITSAT was difficult than the JEE Main examination.

Section Weightage (% of Paper) Difficulty Level (User Consensus, 2025) Key User Quotes/Experiences
Physics ~23% Medium-Hard "No questions too difficult if basics are known, but mixed concepts and lengthy."
Chemistry ~23% Medium (inorganic/organic heavy) "Inorganic and Organic dominated; Physical barely there – felt scorable but shift-dependent."
Mathematics ~31% Hard "Calculus overload; very different and tricky compared to mocks."
English Proficiency ~8% Easy "Pretty chill; easy marks if prepared."
Logical Reasoning ~15% Medium-Hard "More lengthy and non-obvious patterns than mocks."

In a Reddit discussion Post for BITSAT Difficulty Analysis by “r/Bitsatards”, one of the users noted, “BITSAT is more difficult than JEE Mains. Physics and chemistry levels same as JEE, but here you have to attempt 60 questions of that very same level with less time and more deadly negative marking."

Ques. Is difficulty level different question paper sets in BITSAT?

Ans. As stated by BITS Pilani on the BITSAT official brochure, questions are selected randomly from a large question bank. However, experts will ensure that the question sets are of comparable difficulty level, content, question type, etc.

BITSAT Exam Pattern: Marking Scheme

BITSAT marking scheme includes +3 marks for a correct answer and -1 for each incorrect answer. No negative marking will be applied for questions not attempted in BITSAT 2026.

Aspect Details Notes
Correct Answer +3 marks "Each correct answer fetches 3 marks" (Official brochure, confirmed by students)
Incorrect Answer -1 mark (Negative marking) "more stringent -ve... if your accuracy is low, you're gone" (Reddit r/JEENEETards)
Unattempted Questions 0 marks "No marks deducted for unanswered questions" (Common advice: "better to skip than guess")
Total Questions (Main) 130 "130 questions, 3 hours, no sectional time" (Student discussions)
Bonus Questions Up to 12 extra (after finishing 130) "Once you attempt and mark every single question... it will unlock 12 Bonus Questions... but can't change previous answers" (Reddit r/JEENEETards)
Total Maximum Marks 390 (main) + up to 36 (bonus) "The exam rewards accuracy and speed... negative marking discourages guesswork" (Students)

In a discussion regarding bonus questions, a Reddit user asked if anyone could get 400 out of 390 marks in BITSAT. In the same Reddit Thread, user “Busy_Foundation_4251” responded that if you answer all questions correctly, it can get you a score of 426 out of 390 marks.

Ques. How marking scheme influence guessing?

Ans. In BITSAT, you get 3 marks for each correct answer, and -1 mark for each incorrect answer. With blind guessing, your net score can be reduced because of negative marking.

  • Eliminating 1-2 options based on Educated Guessing can be beneficial.
  • It is better to leave a question unattempted instead of guessing blindly.

You are advised to focus on option elimination and quick decision-making while preparing for BITSAT 2026.

Ques. Is BITSAT topic-wise weightage same for each shift?

Ans. No, topic wise weightage in BITSAT may vary with shifts. However, some high-weightage and medium-weightage topics constantly carry same number of questions as discussed in the table below.

Subject High Weightage Topics (User-Reported) Medium/Low Weightage Topics User Notes
Physics Electrostatics (dipoles, fields, charges) Mechanics, some shifts are low overall "Can't skip concepts; mixed questions."
Chemistry Inorganic/Organic (salt analysis, p-block, GOC, biomolecules); Practical Chem Physical (electrochem, equilibrium – only 3-4 Qs) "Inorganic/Organic heavy; easier if memorised."
Maths Calculus (area, differential equations); Algebra Geometry (conics, 3D, vectors – 3-4 Qs) "Calculus dominates; lengthy mixed problems."
