What is MAT 2026?

MAT stands for Management Aptitude Test. It is conducted by AIMA — All India Management Association — a national body recognized by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. AIMA has been conducting MAT since 1988, making it one of the oldest and most established MBA entrance tests in the country. Over 30 lakh management aspirants have appeared for MAT in the past 35+ years.

MAT is a standardised test used to screen candidates for admission to MBA and PGDM programmes. More than 600 B-schools across India accept MAT scores, including colleges in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Kochi, and many other cities. This wide acceptance makes MAT one of the most popular MBA entrance exams in India after CAT.

AIMA holds MAT four times a year — in February, May, September, and December. If your score in one session is low, you can retake the exam in the next session. There is no cap on the number of attempts. Colleges typically consider your best MAT score from within the 1-year validity window.

MAT is available in three test modes:

  • PBT (Paper-Based Test): Traditional pen-and-paper test conducted at test centres across India
  • CBT (Computer-Based Test): Computer-based test conducted at authorised AIMA test centres
  • IBT (Internet-Based Test): Online test you can take from home using your own computer and a stable internet connection

You can appear in more than one mode within the same session. For example, you can attempt both PBT and CBT in the September 2026 session. Your best score across all modes and sessions within the validity period can be submitted to colleges.

MAT 2026 Exam Pattern

The MAT 2026 exam pattern is the same across all three modes — PBT, CBT, and IBT. The exam has 150 multiple choice questions across 5 sections. The total duration is 120 minutes. There are no separate time limits for individual sections — the full 120 minutes is yours to divide as you choose.

MAT 2026 Section-wise Pattern

Section No. Section Name No. of Questions Maximum Marks
1 Language Comprehension 30 30
2 Intelligence and Critical Reasoning 30 30
3 Data Analysis and Sufficiency 30 30
4 Mathematical Skills 30 30
5 Economic and Business Environment (GK) 30 30
Total 150 150

Marking Scheme

  • Correct answer: +1 mark
  • Incorrect answer: -0.25 marks (1/4 negative marking)
  • Unattempted question: 0 marks — no penalty for leaving questions blank

Critical: The Economic and Business Environment (GK) section — Section 5 — is NOT included in the composite percentile calculation. Only Sections 1 through 4 contribute to the composite scaled score used by B-schools for shortlisting candidates.

How the MAT 2026 Score is Calculated

AIMA uses a scaled scoring system. Your raw marks from the first four sections are converted to a composite scaled score through a normalization process. Key points to understand:

  • Raw marks are totalled from Sections 1 to 4 only (GK section excluded)
  • These raw marks are converted to a composite scaled score ranging from 199 to 801
  • Your percentile is then calculated based on this composite scaled score relative to all candidates in that session
  • Normalization ensures fair comparison across PBT, CBT, and IBT modes — so a candidate who found one mode easier is not unfairly advantaged

Suggested Time Split for MAT 2026

The 120 minutes is yours to divide as you see fit. A practical time plan based on typical section difficulty is:

  • Language Comprehension: 25 minutes
  • Intelligence and Critical Reasoning: 25 minutes
  • Data Analysis and Sufficiency: 30 minutes (DI sets are time-intensive)
  • Mathematical Skills: 25 minutes
  • Economic and Business Environment: 15 minutes (not counted in composite score — minimise time here)

MAT 2026 Syllabus

The MAT 2026 syllabus covers five areas that test your aptitude for management programmes. Here is a section-by-section breakdown of what to study:

Section 1: Language Comprehension

This section tests reading speed, comprehension depth, and language accuracy. Expect questions from:

  • Reading comprehension passages — 3 to 4 passages with 5 to 6 questions each
  • Vocabulary — synonyms, antonyms, fill-in-the-blank word usage
  • Grammar — sentence correction, error spotting, subject-verb agreement
  • Para-jumbles — rearranging sentences to form a coherent paragraph
  • Idioms and phrases
  • One-word substitutions and analogies

Section 2: Intelligence and Critical Reasoning

This section tests logical thinking and the ability to draw valid conclusions. Topics include:

  • Logical puzzles and seating arrangements
  • Blood relations
  • Coding-decoding
  • Direction sense
  • Syllogisms — statements and conclusions
  • Statement-assumption and statement-inference questions
  • Critical reasoning passages
  • Number series and letter series
  • Clocks and calendars

Section 3: Data Analysis and Sufficiency

This section tests your ability to read, interpret, and analyse presented data. Topics include:

  • Data Interpretation (DI) sets — bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, tables, and mixed graphs
  • Caselets — data embedded within a written paragraph
  • Data sufficiency problems — judge whether given data is enough to answer a question
  • Comparative data analysis across multiple charts

You can expect 4 to 5 DI sets with 5 to 6 questions each. Data Analysis is often the most time-consuming section. Practise mental calculation speed for percentage and ratio problems before the exam.

Section 4: Mathematical Skills

This section covers quantitative aptitude from basic to intermediate level. Topics include:

  • Arithmetic: Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion, time and work, time-speed-distance, averages, mixtures and alligation
  • Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, polynomials
  • Geometry and Mensuration: Areas, volumes, triangles, circles, coordinate geometry
  • Number Theory: HCF, LCM, remainders, divisibility rules
  • Permutation and Combination
  • Probability

Section 5: Economic and Business Environment

This GK section tests awareness of current and recent economic and business events. Topics include:

  • Current affairs in Indian and global business, economy, and finance (last 6 to 12 months)
  • Union Budget — key fiscal allocations and major policy announcements
  • Monetary policy — RBI decisions, repo rate changes, inflation, CPI data
  • Indian economy — GDP growth, trade statistics, major sector updates
  • Major business deals, mergers, acquisitions, and IPOs
  • International trade and world economic events
  • Static GK — Indian Constitution, science and technology achievements, sports results, national and international awards

Since Section 5 does not count in the composite percentile, limit your preparation time for GK. However, some colleges do evaluate GK scores separately during their shortlisting or interview process, so do not ignore it completely.

MAT Score vs Percentile 2026

MAT uses a scaled scoring system. Your raw marks from the first four sections are converted to a composite scaled score between 199 and 801. The composite percentile shows how you performed relative to all candidates in that session. The table below gives an approximate guide to help you understand what score to target:

Raw Score (out of 120, 4 sections) Composite Scaled Score (approx.) MAT Percentile (approx.) College Tier
105 - 120 700 - 801 95 - 99 Top MAT-accepting B-schools
90 - 104 600 - 699 85 - 94 Good reputed MBA colleges
72 - 89 500 - 599 75 - 84 Mid-tier MBA colleges
55 - 71 400 - 499 60 - 74 Lower-ranked colleges
Below 55 Below 400 Below 60 Limited options

Note: The score-percentile mapping above is approximate and may vary across sessions depending on the number of candidates and their performance distribution. Actual composite scaled scores are calculated by AIMA through normalization and may differ from the estimates in this table.

What is a Good MAT 2026 Score?

A composite score of 600+ or 85+ percentile is generally considered a good MAT score for admission to reputed B-schools. For top MAT-accepting colleges like BIMTECH, JAGSOM, XIME, and PUMBA, you should aim for 90+ percentile or a composite score above 650. A 91+ percentile makes you a strong candidate for shortlisting at most well-ranked MAT colleges in India.

Keep in mind that colleges also weigh your Class 10, Class 12, and graduation marks alongside MAT percentile. Work experience strengthens your profile further, especially during Group Discussion and Personal Interview rounds.

How is the MAT Percentile Calculated?

AIMA calculates the MAT percentile separately for each session. Your raw marks from Sections 1 to 4 are first converted to scaled scores through normalization. AIMA then ranks all candidates based on their composite scaled scores. Your percentile reflects the proportion of candidates who scored below you in that session. This normalization process ensures that candidates who appeared in PBT, CBT, and IBT within the same session are compared on a level playing field, regardless of any variation in paper difficulty across modes.

MAT 2026 Cutoff for Top MBA Colleges

The MAT cutoff varies by college, programme, and the applicant pool for each session. Most reputed B-schools that accept MAT require a composite percentile between 70 and 90. Some colleges also specify a minimum composite scaled score in addition to the percentile. The table below shows expected MAT 2026 cutoffs for popular MBA colleges:

College Name Location MAT Cutoff (Percentile) Programme
BIMTECH (Birla Institute of Management Technology) Greater Noida 75+ PGDM
JAGSOM (Jain Global School of Management) Bangalore 80+ PGDM
Jaipuria Institute of Management Noida / Lucknow 70+ PGDM

XIME Bangalore / Chennai 75+ PGDM
PUMBA (Savitribai Phule Pune University MBA) Pune 80+ MBA
NISM (National Institute of Securities Markets) Mumbai 70+ MBA

Cutoffs above are indicative based on historical data and may change for 2026. Individual colleges also set criteria on academic percentage, work experience, and GD/PI performance alongside the MAT percentile. Always check the official admission notification on each college’s website before applying.

The actual MAT 2026 cutoff at each college depends on:

  • Total number of candidates in the session and how they perform
  • Difficulty level of the exam in that session
  • Total seats available in the programme and category-wise distribution
  • Number of applicants who apply to that specific college using their MAT score
  • Weight given to MAT score versus academics and GD/PI in the final merit list

MAT 2026 Admission Process

MAT does not have a centralised seat allotment or counselling process. Each college that accepts MAT scores conducts its own admission rounds. Here is a step-by-step guide to getting MBA admission through your MAT 2026 score:

Step-by-Step Admission Process After MAT

  • Step 1 — Register and appear for MAT 2026: Choose a session (September or December 2026) and your preferred mode. Register on mat.aima.in, pay the fee, and take the exam.
  • Step 2 — Download your scorecard: After results are declared, log in to mat.aima.in and download your scorecard. It shows section-wise scores and your composite percentile — these are what colleges evaluate for shortlisting.
  • Step 3 — Research eligible colleges: Match your MAT percentile to colleges whose cutoffs you meet. Compare them on accreditation, placements, specialisations, fees, and location. The AIMA website lists all MAT-participating institutions.
  • Step 4 — Apply to multiple colleges simultaneously: Apply individually to each college through their own application portal. Most colleges charge a separate application fee. Submit your MAT scorecard as part of the application. Apply to multiple colleges at the same time — do not wait for shortlists before applying elsewhere.
  • Step 5 — Appear for GD/PI/WAT rounds: Shortlisted candidates attend Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), and/or Writing Ability Test (WAT) at each college that shortlists you. These rounds test communication, critical thinking, and general awareness.
  • Step 6 — Merit list and admission offer: Each college prepares a final merit list combining MAT score, academic marks, GD/PI/WAT performance, and work experience (where applicable). If selected, you receive a written admission offer.
  • Step 7 — Pay fees and confirm your seat: Accept the offer and pay the required fee by the deadline. Missing the deadline means losing the seat to a waitlist candidate.

MAT 2026 Preparation Tips

MAT 2026 tests you across five areas in 120 minutes. With a well-structured preparation plan, you can score well even with 6 to 8 weeks of focused study. Here are practical, section-by-section tips to prepare for MAT September 2026 or December 2026:

Start by Understanding the Exam Pattern

Before anything else, understand the MAT 2026 exam pattern in detail. Know that only the first four sections count towards the composite percentile. Plan your preparation hours accordingly — give more time to Language Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, Data Analysis, and Mathematical Skills.

Section-wise Preparation Tips

  • Language Comprehension: Read English newspapers and business magazines daily — The Hindu, Economic Times, or Business Standard. This builds reading speed, vocabulary, and awareness over time. Practise timed reading comprehension passages. Revise grammar rules such as subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and sentence structure. Word lists for synonyms and antonyms help, but contextual usage matters more in MAT.
  • Intelligence and Critical Reasoning: Practise a wide variety of question types — seating arrangements, blood relations, coding-decoding, direction sense, and syllogisms. Solve 20 to 30 reasoning questions daily. Speed and accuracy are equally important here. Taking mock tests regularly is the most effective way to improve this section.
  • Data Analysis and Sufficiency: Practise DI sets from every chart type — bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, tables, and paragraph caselets. Build your mental calculation speed for percentages and ratios. For data sufficiency, practise judging whether the given information is sufficient to answer a question without necessarily solving it fully — this approach saves time.
  • Mathematical Skills: Begin with NCERT Class 9 and 10 maths to build fundamentals. Practise arithmetic topics — percentages, profit and loss, time-work, speed-distance — consistently every day. Move to geometry, algebra, and permutation-combination after you feel confident in arithmetic. Regular daily practice gives better results than one long session per week.
  • Economic and Business Environment (GK): Read business news daily. Track RBI policy decisions, Budget announcements, major corporate deals, and international economic events from the past 6 to 12 months. Since Section 5 is not counted in the composite percentile, allocate only 15 to 20 minutes per day to GK preparation — but do not ignore it entirely, as some colleges consider GK performance separately.

Mock Tests Are Essential

  • Take at least 2 to 3 full-length MAT mock tests every week in the 4 to 6 weeks before your exam
  • Simulate actual exam conditions — 120 minutes, no phone, no breaks
  • Analyse your performance after each mock: identify which sections are weakest and which question types cost you the most time
  • AIMA releases official sample papers and previous year question papers on its website — always practise with these first, before using third-party resources
  • Track your scaled score improvement across mocks to measure real progress

Handle Negative Marking Carefully

MAT carries -0.25 marks for every wrong answer. Avoid random guessing — skipping an uncertain question costs you nothing, while a wrong attempt costs 0.25 marks. This discipline is especially important in Mathematical Skills and Data Analysis, where calculation errors lead to wrong choices. A good strategy is to first attempt all questions you are confident about, then revisit skipped ones if time permits.

Advice for Working Professionals

If you are a working professional preparing for MAT September or December 2026, you already have an advantage in the GK section through daily business news exposure. Focus your limited study time on Mathematical Skills and Data Analysis, which typically rust for professionals who have been away from maths. Commit to 30 to 45 minutes of focused preparation every day, even on busy workdays — consistency over 6 to 8 weeks outperforms weekend cramming.

FAQs on MAT 2026

Ques. How many times is MAT conducted in 2026?

Ans. AIMA conducts MAT four times a year — in February, May, September, and December. In 2026, two sessions have already been completed (February and May). The next upcoming sessions are September 2026 (PBT: September 13, CBT: September 20) and December 2026 (dates to be announced). You can appear in more than one session and in multiple modes within the same session. Colleges consider the best score from within the 1-year validity period.

Ques. Has the MAT May 2026 result been declared?

Ans. Yes. MAT May 2026 result was declared on June 22, 2026. Candidates who appeared in the May 31, 2026 PBT or June 14, 2026 CBT can download their scorecards by logging in to mat.aima.in with their registered email ID and password. The scorecard shows section-wise scores and the composite percentile.

Ques. What is a good MAT score for top MBA colleges in 2026?

Ans. A composite score of 600+ or 85+ percentile is generally considered good for reputed B-schools accepting MAT. For the most sought-after MAT-accepting colleges like BIMTECH, JAGSOM, XIME, and PUMBA, you should aim for 90+ percentile. A score of 91+ percentile puts you in a strong shortlisting position at top MAT colleges across India.

Ques. Is MAT score valid for 2 years?

Ans. No. MAT score is valid for only 1 year from the date of the specific exam you appeared in. For example, if you appeared in the May 2026 PBT on May 31, 2026, your scorecard is valid until May 31, 2027. After expiry, you must appear for MAT again. Complete your college applications well before your scorecard expires.

Ques. Which is better for MAT — PBT, CBT, or IBT?

Ans. All three modes — PBT (Paper-Based), CBT (Computer-Based), and IBT (Internet-Based) — follow the same exam pattern, question count, duration, and marking scheme. The choice depends on your personal comfort. PBT suits candidates who prefer writing on paper. CBT and IBT suit candidates more comfortable on a computer. IBT is most convenient as you take it from home, but it requires a stable internet connection and a distraction-free environment. You can appear in more than one mode in the same session and use your best score.

Ques. How is the MAT composite score calculated?

Ans. The MAT composite score is calculated from four sections only — Language Comprehension, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, and Mathematical Skills. The Economic and Business Environment (GK) section is excluded from the composite score. AIMA converts your raw marks from these four sections into a scaled composite score ranging from 199 to 801 through a normalization process. The percentile is then calculated based on this composite scaled score relative to all candidates in that session.
