XAT 2027: Registration Opens on 15th July 2026, Syllabus, Exam Pattern and XLRI Cutoff

XAT 2027 (Xavier Aptitude Test) is a national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur and accepted by more than 250 business schools across India, including XLRI, XIM University, IMT Ghaziabad, and MICA. XAT 2026 was held on January 4, 2026 with a record 1.42 lakh registrations, the highest in XAT history. The XAT 2027 cycle is now about to begin, with registration expected to open on July 10, 2026 at xatonline.in.

• Registration Opens: XAT 2027 registration will open on July 15, 2026 at xatonline.in. The XAT registration closes on 6 December 2026.
• Exam Date: XAT 2027 will be held on January 03, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in computer-based mode. XAT is traditionally held on the first Sunday of January every year.
• Application Fee: The XAT 2027 registration fee is expected to be Rs. 2,200, the same as XAT 2026. Candidates who also apply for XLRI programs need to pay an extra Rs. 200 per program selected.
• XAT Admit Card: You can expect the XAT Admit card to be released on December 20, 2026 (Tentative). 
• XLRI Cutoff: To get a call from XLRI Jamshedpur for PGDM-BM, you need around 96 percentile overall. Based on XAT 2026 analysis, a score of 40 or more marks in Part 1 typically puts you in the 99+ percentile bracket.

What is XAT?

XAT stands for Xavier Aptitude Test. It is a national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur (Xavier School of Management). XLRI has been conducting XAT since 1955, making it one of India’s oldest and most respected MBA entrance exams.

XAT 2027 is accepted by more than 250 B-schools across India. These include top institutes like XLRI Jamshedpur, XIM University Bhubaneswar, IMT Ghaziabad, MICA Ahmedabad, Great Lakes Institute of Management, and TAPMI Manipal. Many mid-tier and regional B-schools also use XAT scores for PGDM admissions.

XAT 2026, held on January 4, 2026, recorded more than 1.42 lakh registrations. This is the highest number of candidates in XAT history. With competition growing every year, planning your XAT 2027 preparation from the registration stage itself is very important.

Why XAT is Different from Other MBA Exams

XAT has a few features that set it apart from CAT and other national MBA entrance tests.

• Decision Making (DM) Section: XAT is the only major MBA exam in India with a dedicated DM section. It tests your ability to judge ethical dilemmas, business scenarios, and complex real-life situations. You cannot prepare for DM through CAT preparation alone.
• XLRI does not accept CAT: If you want admission to XLRI Jamshedpur, XAT is mandatory. XLRI does not consider CAT, GMAT, or NMAT scores for its flagship PGDM programmes.
• Tougher Verbal section: XAT Reading Comprehension passages are longer and more opinion-heavy compared to CAT. Critical reasoning questions require deeper analysis.
• Penalty for non-attempts: Unlike CAT, XAT penalises you for leaving more than 8 questions unattempted in Part 1. This changes the test-taking strategy significantly.
• GK is evaluated separately: XAT has a General Knowledge section whose marks are not part of your overall XAT percentile. XLRI uses GK scores separately during shortlisting.

XAT 2027 Eligibility Criteria

XAT 2027 eligibility criteria are simple and flexible. There is no age limit and no minimum percentage requirement. If you have a graduation degree from a recognized university, you can apply.

Educational Qualification

You need a bachelor’s degree of at least 3 years from a government-recognized university in India or abroad. The degree can be in any discipline, including engineering, commerce, arts, science, law, or medicine. There is no restriction on the stream of graduation.

Final-year students are also eligible. If you are in the last year of your bachelor’s programme and expect to complete your degree by June 2027, you can apply for XAT 2027. However, your final admission to any institute will be subject to completing your degree.

Minimum Marks in Graduation

XLRI does not require a minimum percentage in graduation to appear for XAT 2027. You can apply regardless of your graduation percentage. However, individual institutes that accept XAT scores may have their own minimum percentage requirements for final admission. Most top B-schools require at least 50% marks in graduation.

Age Limit

There is no upper or lower age limit for XAT 2027. Anyone who meets the educational qualification requirement can register and appear for the exam.

Work Experience

Work experience is not required to appear for XAT. Fresh graduates can apply directly. Some specific programmes like the XLRI General Management Programme (GMP) require work experience, but XAT 2027 itself imposes no such condition.

XAT 2027 Registration: Application Process and Fee

XAT 2027 registration will begin on July 15, 2026. You can complete the entire application process online at xatonline.in. There is no offline application mode for XAT.

XAT 2027 Application Fee

The application fee is paid online through debit card, credit card, or net banking. The fee is non-refundable. If you want to apply for both XLRI PGDM-BM and PGDM-HRM, the total cost is Rs. 2,200 + Rs. 400 = Rs. 2,600.

Do not pay the XAT fee on any third-party website. Only use the official xatonline.in portal for registration and payment.

How to Apply for XAT 2027: Step-by-Step Process

• Step 1: Visit xatonline.in and click on the XAT 2027 registration link when it goes live.
• Step 2: Create a new account with your name, email ID, and mobile number. You will receive login credentials by email.
• Step 3: Log in and fill in your personal details, contact information, and academic background including Class 10, Class 12, and graduation details.
• Step 4: Enter work experience details if applicable.
• Step 5: Choose up to 3 preferred XAT exam cities from the available list of 100+ test cities.
• Step 6: Select the XLRI programmes you want to apply for and add other B-schools from the XAT-accepting colleges list.
• Step 7: Upload your recent passport-size photograph and scanned signature in JPEG format.
• Step 8: Pay the application fee online and submit the form.
• Step 9: Download and save the confirmation receipt.

Application Editing Window

XLRI usually opens a short application editing window a few weeks before the registration deadline. In XAT 2026, candidates could edit their application from December 8 to December 10, 2025. A similar window is expected for XAT 2027 in November or December 2026. You can use this to correct mistakes in your submitted form.

XAT 2027 Syllabus

XLRI does not publish a formal prescribed syllabus for XAT. Based on analysis of XAT papers from 2015 to 2026, you can clearly identify which topics appear most often in each section. The XAT 2027 syllabus is expected to follow the same pattern.

Verbal and Logical Ability Syllabus (26 Questions)

This section tests your reading, reasoning, and language skills. XAT passages are typically complex, abstract, or opinion-heavy. You need strong comprehension and critical thinking skills to do well here.

• Reading Comprehension: 3-4 passages with 4-5 questions each; passages are often from philosophy, economics, or social commentary
• Critical Reasoning: Identify assumptions, strengthen or weaken arguments, draw valid conclusions
• Para Completion: Choose the best sentence to complete a paragraph logically
• Para Jumbles: Rearrange sentences into a logical and coherent order
• Vocabulary: Fill in the blanks, word usage, analogies, and contextual usage
• Grammar: Error identification and sentence correction

Decision Making Syllabus (21 Questions)

Decision Making is the most distinctive section of XAT and is not found in CAT or most other MBA exams. Questions come in the form of case-lets describing a business or real-life situation, followed by questions about the best course of action.

• Situational Judgement: Business scenarios where you must pick the most appropriate management decision
• Ethical Dilemmas: Cases involving moral choices in workplace or social settings
• Analytical Reasoning: Conditions, grouping, and arrangement-based logic within a given case
• Managerial Caselets: Short cases about team management, resource allocation, and organizational decisions
• Fairness Assessment: Evaluate the actions of individuals described in a scenario

Decision Making is where most XAT aspirants lose marks. There are no fixed formulas for DM. The only effective way to improve is to solve previous XAT DM questions and understand the reasoning pattern behind each correct answer.

Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation Syllabus (28 Questions)

The QA section in XAT is generally harder than in CAT, especially in geometry and modern math. You need to be thorough with your fundamentals.

• Arithmetic: Percentages, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time speed distance
• Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, polynomials, logarithms, functions
• Geometry: Triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, coordinate geometry, mensuration (area and volume)
• Modern Mathematics: Permutation and combination, probability, set theory, sequences and series
• Number System: HCF, LCM, divisibility rules, remainders, prime numbers
• Data Interpretation: Bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, tables, caselets, data comparisons across multiple sources

General Knowledge Syllabus (20 Questions)

GK questions in XAT cover both static knowledge and current affairs from the past 12 months. Since GK marks are used by XLRI for shortlisting, do not ignore this section if XLRI is your target college.

XAT 2027 Admit Card

XAT 2027 admit card is expected to be released in the third week of December 2026. In XAT 2026, admit cards were available for download from December 20, 2025. You will need your registered email ID and password to log in to xatonline.in and download the admit card.

What to Carry to the XAT 2027 Exam Centre

• Printed copy of the XAT 2027 admit card (printout, not a mobile screenshot)
• One valid, original, government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, voter ID, or driving licence)

Entry to the XAT exam centre will not be allowed without a printed admit card and original photo ID. No candidate will be admitted after the gates close. Reach the exam centre at least 30 minutes before the scheduled reporting time.

Official Mock Test Before XAT 2027

XLRI releases a free official mock test on xatonline.in before the exam. In XAT 2026, the mock test was available from December 10 to December 11, 2025. The XAT 2027 mock test is expected in December 2026. Attempting this mock is important because it gives you a feel of the actual XAT interface, timer, and question navigation before the real exam.

XAT 2027 Result and XLRI Selection Process

XAT 2027 result is expected in the second or third week of January 2027. XAT 2026 result was declared on January 16, 2026, just 12 days after the exam. After the result, you can log in to xatonline.in and download your scorecard with section-wise scores and your overall XAT percentile.

What the XAT 2027 Scorecard Contains

• Section-wise raw scores for Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making, and QA & DI
• Overall XAT score and percentile (based on Part 1 only)
• GK section score (used separately by XLRI for shortlisting)

XLRI Shortlisting After XAT 2027 Result

XLRI Jamshedpur shortlists candidates based on overall XAT percentile and mandatory sectional cutoffs in all three Part 1 sections. You must clear both the overall cutoff and each sectional cutoff to receive a shortlist call from XLRI. XLRI does not accept CAT, GMAT, or any other exam for its two-year PGDM programmes.

XLRI GD-PI-WAT Selection Rounds

After shortlisting, XLRI calls candidates for its selection rounds from February to March. For XAT 2026, this process ran from February 15 to March 20, 2026, across multiple cities. XAT 2027 selection rounds are expected in the same period in 2027.

• Written Analytical Essay (WAT): A 20-minute essay on a given topic, testing written communication and analytical thinking
• Group Discussion (GD): A group exercise assessing communication, leadership, and team collaboration

More than 250 business schools across India accept XAT 2027 scores for MBA and PGDM admissions. These range from India’s most prestigious B-schools like XLRI to strong regional institutes. XAT 2027 Preparation Tips

XAT 2027 is expected on January 3, 2027. With registration opening around July 10, 2026, you have about 6 months to prepare. XAT is known for its high difficulty in Decision Making and Verbal Ability. A focused, section-specific strategy from the start will give you a strong edge.

1. Start with Previous Year XAT Papers

The best starting point for XAT 2027 preparation is solving previous year XAT papers from 2015 to 2026. XAT maintains a consistent style and difficulty level across years. Solving these papers gives you a real sense of what to expect.

• Solve at least the last 10 years of XAT papers under timed conditions
• Pay extra attention to the Decision Making section, which many CAT-focused aspirants underestimate
• Analyse every wrong answer to understand the reasoning pattern behind the correct choice

2. Build a Section-Wise Preparation Plan

• Verbal and Logical Ability: Read 2-3 quality articles daily from English newspapers or business journals. Focus on understanding the structure of arguments, not just vocabulary. Practice critical reasoning from XAT past papers as it differs significantly from CAT.
• Decision Making: There is no standard textbook for DM. The only effective preparation is to read and understand XAT DM questions from past papers, then analyse why each answer is correct. Coaching institutes offer DM-specific material that is worth using.
• Quantitative Ability and DI: Brush up on geometry, modern math (probability, permutation-combination), and complex DI sets. XAT DI often involves comparing data from multiple sources simultaneously. Practice both speed and accuracy.

Start taking full-length XAT mock tests from October 2026. Aim for at least 15-20 mocks before the exam. After each mock, spend time analysing where you lost marks: wrong answers, excess blanks, or section-specific weaknesses.

• Attempt the official XLRI mock test on xatonline.in when it becomes available in December 2026
• Practice finishing Part 1 within 170 minutes while attempting at least 67 of 75 questions
• Track your section-wise performance across mocks to spot weak areas early

4. Handle Negative Marking Strategically

XAT has two types of penalties in Part 1. A wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. Leaving more than 8 questions unattempted costs 0.10 marks per blank beyond the 8th. This means you cannot skip freely, but you also must not guess blindly.

• Attempt a question if you have at least 40-50% confidence in the answer
• Keep a mental count of blanks; if you are approaching 8, attempt the remaining questions even with partial confidence
• Budget your time so you have 3-4 minutes at the end of Part 1 to revisit skipped questions

5. Do Not Ignore GK if XLRI is Your Target

Many candidates skip GK because it does not affect the XAT percentile. But XLRI evaluates your GK score separately during shortlisting. A better GK score can give you an edge when two candidates have similar overall percentiles.

• Focus on business news, economic policy, government schemes, and international events
