- The exposure and opportunities were immense at Miranda. Although the labs weren't EXCEPTIONAL they were definitely better than any other labs in DU. Our lab staff is super helpful too.
- The environment of Miranda is everything. The people you meet here are like no other, you learn so much here every day from a diverse group of amazing bright passionate people!
- Being in a gender minority college can make you come face to face about a lot of realities of life. The curriculum was quite intense for my course, and the labs were also super long, but all of it was worth it. The coursework is quite helpful.
Dislikes
- I did not find the Chemistry department faculty to be student-friendly or helpful. There were a few professors who were AMAZING at teaching but most of the others were quite rude or didnt put in that many efforts.
- What Miranda's chemistry department did not prepare me for was skills in academia like scientific surveying, scientific writing, research papee writing, advanced techniques in lab. You have venture out and find opportunities outside of the college.
Course Curriculum Overview
The Chemistry honors curriculum's core papers are extremely important and useful to provide you with a strong foundation for your masters (atleast theoretically). At Miranda, whatever was taught to us during the course was enough to clear entrance examinations like JAM or GATE with just a little more practice. We received useful materials and resources throughout the course from our faculty as well as our helpful seniors. Since I was in the post-pandemic batch (2021) the first year was quite hectic in terms of exams and fitting in the curriculum in a short amount of time. But after the first year, we got well-adjusted with our schedules, timings for the labs, and preparation for examination. I have applied for Masters abroad, and the curriculum is accepted in several European Universities as well as UK universities.
Fees and Financial Aid
There were no hikes in our course fees throughtout the three years. The fees is comparatively quite less compared to other colleges in India including public and private colleges. Along with the college fee, an examination fee is to be paid for every semester examination (1300-1600 for chemistry department). There are quite a few scholarships available in the chemistry department, which are mostly merit-based and depend on the performance of students in examinations.
Campus Life
Our annual fest Tempest was one of the best times of my life with DJ nights, Neeti Mohan, several stalls and the freedom of being in a gender minority college just made everything a million times better. The fest season in Miranda is always super lively and fun. We have several college societies and clubs including open societies, enactus, NSS, placement cell, Womens Development Cell, Queer Collective, Equal Opportunity Cell, Celluloid film society etc who organise one of a kind events throughout the academic year where you always get to learn something new.
Admission
Before NEP, the eligibility for the course was solely based on the marks secured in CBSE XII examinations. In 2021, the cutoff for Chemistry hons started at 97.33 (Gen). Now, CUET-UG is required. The cutoffs for which will be on the basis of percentile ranks. Its helpful to check last year's CUET cutoffs to check your eligibility. I did not avail reservations, but they are extremely important.
Faculty
The Chemistry Department of Miranda House has some highly qualified and respected professors and researchers in their fields. So, I had high hopes for the teaching environment and willingness to help students and guide them. I wasn't wholly disappointed but also not fully satisfied. While some professors were quite helpful, taught subjects in a way youll never forget, there were others who were rude, did not care for the students in the slightest and were quite unhelpful. So it was a 50/50 experience for me. We do have summer projects at the college, those were a fruitful experience always. We got to learn a lot more than classroom learning. While my project mentors were great, others complained about a lack of guidance, a lack of presence of mentora during projects.
