IIT Delhi has secured the top spot among Indian institutes in the QS World University Rankings 2027 at 118th globally. A total of 52 Indian universities feature in the list, making India the fifth most represented higher education system.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has released the QS World University Rankings 2027 on its official website at topuniversities.com. The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has emerged as the top-ranked Indian institute. It now holds the 118th position globally in the latest edition.
The new rankings feature 52 Indian universities in total. This is up from just 14 institutions a decade ago. India is now the fifth most represented higher education system in the world. Only the United States, the United Kingdom, mainland China, and Germany rank higher in representation.
QS World University Rankings 2027: Top Indian Institutes
IIT Delhi has equalled the highest position ever achieved by an Indian institution in the QS rankings. The previous best was held by IIT Bombay at 129th in the 2026 edition. The top performers from India are listed below.

IIT Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore share the 221st position. The University of Delhi is the highest-ranked non-STEM institution from India in this edition. Globally, the QS World University Rankings 2027 saw the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retain the No. 1 position, while Imperial College London and Stanford University shared the second spot.

India Performance Overview in QS Rankings 2027
Of the 52 ranked Indian universities, 26 institutions have improved their global positions. Nine universities have held steady. Fifteen have witnessed a decline, and two Indian institutions made their debut in the QS World University Rankings 2027. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad entered the rankings in the 701-710 band, while Bharathiar University debuted in the 711-720 range. Their inclusion took the total number of ranked Indian universities to 52, further strengthening India's presence in the global higher education landscape.
A total of 18 Indian universities have recorded their highest-ever ranking in this edition. The progress now extends well beyond the elite IITs to a wider mix of institutions.
Notable Climbers Beyond the IITs
- Vellore Institute of Technology rose 94 places to the 597th position.
- Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani climbed 93 places to 575th.
- Shoolini University moved up 51 places to 452nd.
- Chandigarh University climbed 49 places to 526th.
- Jamia Millia Islamia advanced over 75 places to 686th.
Where Indian Universities Are Performing Strongly?
Indian institutions have shown clear gains in research impact and employability. Eleven Indian universities have entered the world's top 100 for citations per faculty. Bharathiar University ranks 75th globally on this indicator on its debut entry.
On the employability front, the University of Mumbai stands at the 25th position globally. The University of Delhi follows at the 35th rank. Six Indian institutions also feature in the global top 100 for employer reputation.
Areas Where India Still Lags
Internationalisation remains the biggest weak spot for Indian universities. Around 90 percent of ranked Indian institutions have shown no improvement in international student numbers. Only one Indian university features in the world's top 500 for international faculty representation.
Academic reputation has also seen limited progress. Only 8 percent of Indian institutions have improved on this indicator. Around 28 percent have declined on the same measure.

India has logged a 271 percent rise in ranked universities over the past decade. This is the fastest growth among all G20 nations. Ranked institutes now span 19 states and union territories, up from just 9 in 2017.
