KU MSW FAQs

Ques. Is the MSW entrance exam at Kerala University very competitive? How should I prepare?

Ans. The CSS PG Entrance Exam for MSW at Kerala University consists of 100 multiple-choice questions covering subject knowledge at the qualifying examination level, along with logical and numerical reasoning. The exam is 2 hours long with 0.25 negative marking per wrong answer. Since the MSW department has only 30 seats and the programme is popular across Kerala, competition can be significant. Candidates are advised to focus on social work concepts, social welfare legislation, Indian social problems, and general reasoning. Reviewing the BA/BSW syllabus thoroughly and practising previous years' question papers is the most effective preparation strategy.

Ques. Does Kerala University MSW offer any specialization, and how is it allocated?

Ans. Yes, the MSW programme at Kerala University offers two specializations: Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, and Community Development. The allocation of specializations is typically done at the department level based on student preference and availability of seats in each specialization. Students are advised to clarify the specialization allocation process with the Department of Sociology at the time of admission, as it may vary by batch.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for MSW students at Kerala University?

Ans. Hostel accommodation at the Kariavattom campus is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. Students must apply separately through the hostel portal (hostel.keralauniversity.ac.in) after securing admission. Eligibility is restricted to students whose permanent residence is at least 40 km from the hostel, except for PWD candidates. Given the limited hostel capacity, students from nearby districts may need to arrange private accommodation. Monthly hostel fees at university-managed hostels are approximately Rs. 3,000, which is significantly lower than private accommodation in Thiruvananthapuram.

Ques. Can students from non-social work backgrounds apply for MSW at Kerala University?

Ans. Yes, the MSW programme at Kerala University is open to graduates from any discipline, including BA, BSc, BCom, B.Tech, MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, and LLB, provided they have secured at least 50% marks in aggregate (45% for SC/ST). However, 25% of the total seats are reserved for BSW (Bachelor of Social Work) holders, giving them a preference in those seats. Non-BSW candidates compete for the remaining 75% of seats. Having a background in social sciences, psychology, or humanities can be an advantage in the entrance exam.

Ques. What are the career prospects after completing MSW from Kerala University?

Ans. MSW graduates from Kerala University find employment across a wide range of sectors including hospitals and healthcare institutions (as medical social workers), NGOs and civil society organizations, government social welfare departments, corporate CSR divisions, child welfare and rehabilitation centres, and educational institutions. The Medical and Psychiatric Social Work specialization is particularly in demand in hospitals and mental health settings, while Community Development graduates often work with government schemes and development organizations. Starting salaries typically range from Rs. 2.5 to Rs. 4 LPA, with growth potential in senior roles and government positions.

Ques. Are SC/ST students required to appear for the entrance exam for MSW admission at Kerala University?

Ans. As per the Kerala University CSS PG Prospectus, SC/ST candidates admitted to vacant seats are exempt from the mandatory entrance examination requirement. However, SC/ST candidates who wish to compete for merit seats or reserved seats through the regular process are encouraged to appear for the entrance exam to improve their chances of securing a seat. It is advisable to check the latest prospectus on admissions.keralauniversity.ac.in for any updates to this provision for the current admission year.
