KU MCA FAQs
Ques. Is the MCA at Kerala University a 2-year or 3-year programme now?
Ans. The MCA at Kerala University has been revised to a 2-year (4-semester) programme in line with the AICTE guidelines that mandated the reduction from 3 years to 2 years for MCA programmes across India. This change was implemented from the 2020-21 academic year onwards. Students who had enrolled in the 3-year programme before this change were allowed to complete their existing course. If you are applying now, you will be enrolling in the 2-year MCA programme. This makes the programme more focused and industry-aligned, covering core computing, software development, and IT management subjects in a condensed but comprehensive format.
Ques. What is the difference between MCA admission through LBS CAP and through the CSS PG (University Teaching Departments)?
Ans. These are two separate admission pathways. The LBS CAP route is for admission to MCA at affiliated colleges (both government and self-financing) across Kerala, and the entrance exam is conducted by LBS Centre for Science and Technology. The CSS PG route is specifically for admission to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Kerala's own teaching departments (Kariavattom campus). Both require an entrance exam, but the CSS PG exam is conducted by Kerala University itself (May 18-24, 2026 for 2026-27 batch). If you want to study MCA directly at the University of Kerala's main campus, you should apply through the CSS PG portal at admissions.keralauniversity.ac.in.
Ques. Can students from non-science or non-computer backgrounds apply for MCA at Kerala University?
Ans. Yes, MCA at Kerala University is open to graduates from any discipline - BA, B.Com, B.Sc, BCA, B.Tech, B.Voc, etc. The only requirement is a minimum of 50% marks in graduation (45% for reserved categories) and preferably having studied Mathematics at 10+2 or graduation level. Students without a Mathematics background are required to complete a compulsory bridge course in Mathematics and Computer subjects as framed by the respective university/institution. This makes MCA a popular choice for commerce and arts graduates who want to transition into the IT sector.
Ques. What are the hostel facilities like for MCA students at Kerala University's Kariavattom campus?
Ans. The University of Kerala has separate Men's and Women's PG hostels at the Kariavattom campus. Hostel admission is restricted to students from University Teaching Departments (i.e., students admitted through the CSS PG route to the main campus). Hostel eligibility requires that the student's residence is at least 40 km from the hostel. Monthly charges are approximately Rs. 3,000. Allotment is done through an online portal (hostel.keralauniversity.ac.in) and is subject to availability. Students admitted to affiliated colleges under LBS CAP will need to arrange their own accommodation near their respective colleges.
Ques. What is the scope of MCA from Kerala University in terms of placements and career opportunities?
Ans. MCA graduates from Kerala University and its affiliated colleges find employment primarily in the IT sector in Kerala (Technopark, Infopark, Cyberpark) and across India. Common roles include Software Developer, System Analyst, Database Administrator, Web Developer, and IT Consultant. Kerala's IT parks, especially Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram (near the university campus), provide good placement opportunities for MCA graduates. While the university does not publish course-specific placement data for MCA, students from the Department of Computer Science have been placed in companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, UST Global, and various Kerala-based IT firms. Many students also pursue higher studies (M.Phil., Ph.D.) or government jobs (Kerala PSC, UPSC) after MCA.
Ques. Is there any age limit for applying to MCA at Kerala University?
Ans. There is no specific age limit mentioned in the Kerala University CSS PG or LBS MCA prospectus for admission to the MCA programme. Any candidate who meets the academic eligibility criteria (graduation with 50% marks) can apply, regardless of age. This makes MCA accessible to working professionals or those who took a gap year after graduation. However, candidates should verify the latest prospectus each year as eligibility conditions may be updated by the university or LBS Centre.
