Likes
- My overall experience was excellent in terms of how the course was structured and the size of the class as well. I was also a teaching assistant for the first year law students which was quite invigorating as it gave me a view of how their classes are structured as well.
- The school also provides a ton of resources for international students, especially when it comes to training on academic writing, academic reading and trainers who work with students on each of their papers to help them improve their scores.
- In terms of the college life, the campus has a host of societies one can join. For me though, my flat became my primary circle of support and company. We had a diverse flat with people from 6 countries which was awesome because it gave us an opportunity to experience our different cultures and the food too. Some of my best memories from York are around our kitchen table where we shared at least one meal everyday and a host of coffee breaks in between studying.
Dislikes
- The only downside I saw was that the local people were a bit ignorant about India and generally the world outside UK which was a bit odd at times, though they were overall good sports about learning.
Likes
- Campus Great, airy, huge campus with convenient travel across York city
- Faculty Amazing faculty with varied experience with amazing placement call to discuss CVs and other job opportunities
- Diversity in terms of culture and students
Dislikes
- 1-2 classes per day (had to travel 45 minutes for just 2 classes, so maybe poor schedule)
- Should have better canteen experience (very expensive food)
- Should have better practical implications of theoretical knowledge
Scholarship
- There wasn't any during my time at UoY. Since I applied to my course last because I had to change my course option from Pharma to MPH.
- I THINK ONE OF MY BATCHMATES RECEIVED ONE FOR BEING AN ONLY GIRL CHILD IN INDIA. I am not sure what the process was, and I think it was maybe 5 lakh INR. I'm not sure about this. It was although a national scholarship and I am not aware of any that UoY handed out that year.
Likes
- The campus was really good - Huge in terms of size, well maintained, beautiful buildings and surroundings
- Mental health was one of the top priorities at all times
- Staff (Including housekeeping, faculty, cafes) was extremely friendly and helpful
Dislikes
- Careers Team wasn't as great as I had imagined
- A bit secluded as campus is huge
- Needed to have more small supermarkets around the campus
Scholarship
- No there is no scholarship for my course or any other bachelor course in The University of York. There are scholarships for Masters students at The University of York as I am aware 2 of my friends had received them.
- I am unaware of the criteria and what the process was like though. Typical award amount ranges, as per my assumption, from £4000-£10,000
Likes
- The environment and ambience, the campus had a great forest cover and a lake flowing through it.
- The resources (the library, the subscriptions, etc) The culture and inclusivity, people were very welcoming.
- The events and student clubs.
Dislikes
- The teaching was good at times (a few lecturers were great, but then there were some who were just reading out from the lecture slides).
- Not much placement support.
- The curriculum felt a bit outdated, there were interesting things but didn’t many include skills that would help you land a job.
Scholarship
- The university changes scholarships every year, but mostly were merit based.
- Some my international classmates received them, one received £2,500 and the other £5,000
- On average maybe 10% of the class may receive scholarships, but depends from course to course.
- Every course has their own scholarships, mine didn't have specific for the course but the whole masters group had them.
- There are country specific, race specific ones too.
Likes
- Flexibility in meeting with faculty in addition to regular classes. All professors on my program were happy to schedule time and meet you if you were struggling and were very responsive to emails as well.
- York in itself is a perfect student city with a good blend of social activities as well as a calmer environment you need to focus when compared to cities like London/Manchester. On campus accomodations are great but I lived off campus and it's a perfectly safe city to live off campus if you require something cheaper.
- Student portal that is the university account has all lectures, notes, videos of classes uploaded for all the modules which is extremely preferable if you are one for blended learning.
Dislikes
- Lack of career services or assistance for job search or guidance as an international student requiring sponsorship.
- Thesis at the end of the program is decided from pre-determined list of projects. While professors allow you to proceed with your own ideas if you have something, it's more of an exception than the rule.
- Lesser proximity to bigger cities also means job fairs and conferences are harder to get to and from but it can be managed if planned well.
Scholarship
- No one on my program received any scholarship. Some people I knew from other programs from India received up to 10,000 GBP. Criteria revolved mainly around academic performance.
- There are few country-specific scholarships but generally it can be a bit hard to get. I had decent grades and professional experience but amongst people who got scholarships were people who had done a master's prior to this one and had consistently high grades no matter which university they went to.

- My course had some well known professors in the industry.
- There are multiple places in buildings here you can study apart from library, you can book a group study rooms as well.
- Really nice rooms in college accommodation.
Dislikes
- Course was highly research based, over practical based.
- Sports/Gym membership wasn't free and had really expensive fee.
- some if the rooms had electrical heaters and hardly maintained the temperature.
Scholarship
- No, I didn't receive any scholarships but my friends did. 3-4 students received scholarships that I know, of around 5 lakhs-10 lakhs each. I did apply for it but didn't get it. I had to write an essay explaining my motivation for joining this university and the course chosen, and there were overall 5 questions.
- Chevening scholarships are the most possible ones. You have to keep an eye on the university website to avoid missing the final date.
Likes
- University of York has a very unique campus. It’s spread over 550 acres and is a beautiful mix of modern and historic architecture.
- It has a diverse range of students from various countries. So it’s very easy to find your kind of people.
- It is very accessible despite being huge. There is a free campus bus service that makes all areas easy to reach.
Dislikes
- If you live off campus, it becomes difficult to interact with students who live on campus. You are still able to interact with a lot of other people but it becomes a bit divided.
- While there are a lot of grocery stores on campus, a few of the big and cheap ones are quite far.
- There are two campuses - while both of them have their own charm. The west campus has residential colleges which are not as well built as the ones on east campus as these are newly built. There is always new construction underway though and work is being done to make them as accommodative as possible.
Scholarship
- There are various scholarships, including the excellence award, young achievers scholarships, and extraordinary performances scholarships. I received the last one, which gave me a 50% scholarship on my tuition fee for the first year.
- The university has various programs and incentives that you can enrol in to get a scholarship for your degree.
- The scholarships can range from £1000-£10000 depending on which one you enrol in and can be used for tuition, accommodation, or living expenses depending on the scholarship terms.

- Interactive seminars and lectures
- Library. Best place to work on assignments. I had most of my productive time in the library, where I could be in my zone.
Dislikes
- Too much travel from the west campus to the east campus to attend lectures.
- Extracurricular groups or clubs felt expensive to join.
- Wentworth College used to close up early on weekends.
Scholarship
- I had applied for a scholarship (I don't remember the name), but I did not receive the scholarship as some of the factors were out of the eligibility criteria.
- The award amount of the scholarship was 2000 GBP, which is equal to approximately 2.1 lakh INR.
- I don't know any of my Indian batchmates receiving a scholarship as it was never a topic of conversation. I have no idea how many students receive scholarships each year.

- I liked the fact that the library was always accessible and had common rooms wherein you can go in anytime and study.
- The university's common room had access to various games and a television set which made it more enjoyable to hang out with friends.
- The classrooms were big enough to accommodate huge crowds and the hang out areas throughout the university were aplenty.
Dislikes
- The university could have given a 6 month or a 1 year internship to students looking for a job but wasn't the case at the time.
- When I had enrolled for the university (2018), UK hadn't introduced a work visa without sponsorship for foreign students which made it more difficult to look for a job, clear the interview rounds and the most importantly fetch a Tier - 2 Work Visa.
- I wished the students were divided into 2 classrooms as there were a lot of students in the classroom at a time.
Likes
- UK because of UK culture, British Government and regulations generally similar to India. Ease of getting the Visa and future job Opportunities scope, Business management has better recognition in UK and is famous for Management courses.
- University of York for the location of York (One of the oldest Medieval city and recognized as the most friendly people of UK are the York residents).
- The QS ranking and global ranking of the University that falls under 150 ranks in the world, and stands top 16 in the UK, The campus location and many other factors.
Overview
My experience at an abroad university is rewarding experience. It is a time of personal growth, academic achievement, and social exploration. I often tend to encounter new ideas, perspectives, and people that expand their horizons and broaden their understanding of the world. Overall, the university experience is an important chapter in many people's lives and so in my life it has significantly impacted my personal and professional development.
