What Students Say
Likes
- The lake view and ducks
- Interactive seminars and lectures
- Library. Best place to work on assignments. I had most of my productive time in the library, where I could be in my zone.
Dislikes
- Too much travel from the west campus to the east campus to attend lectures.
- Extracurricular groups or clubs felt expensive to join.
- Wentworth College used to close up early on weekends.
Course Curriculum
- It was a bit difficult for me to understand the academics at the beginning because the learning process and approach were different.
- The teaching process was a mix of both theoretical and practical, whereas my undergraduate degree was only theoretical teaching. Anyway, it was a good learning experience for me.
- The mixed approach was a positive aspect of my learning and course.
Admission Experience
- I applied to and got accepted into Wentworth College. No, I did not face any rejections. I did not apply to most other colleges as I felt different from Wentworth. All other colleges had expensive accommodations. Also, Wentworth College was near the halls where my lectures took place. Wentworth is a good college in West Campus but can improve with some improvements.
- I chose University of York after a lot of prior research and meeting with Uni of York delegates during University fairs. I also had some friends staying in the UK who suggested University of York over other selected Universities.
- I felt it was the right choice as Uni of York is also a Russell Group University It was very beneficial for me. The overall admission process was not much of a hassle for me. I would rate it a solid 8 out of 10.
- I applied for the September intake because it was feasible for me. I completed my undergraduate degree in June 2023. During that time, I was also motivated to pursue a Master's in the UK, so I had already started my research.
- I did not want to waste any time or take a gap year, so I instantly applied for the September 2023 intake and was admitted to the University of York. I started my application in March 2023. I received a conditional offer in April/May of 2023. Right after I received my undergraduate degree and uploaded it on the admission portal, I received my Unconditional Offer Letter and CAS letter. Only my Visa took a little time as I started my Visa process late. But everything else went smoothly.
Class Schedule
- Usually, one or two classes were typically scheduled in a day.
- Sometimes, there were three, but the timings did not make the day hectic.
- For mixed lectures, the student count went up to 240, but normally, in other lectures, it was a maximum of 50.
- Don't know the exact number, but around 20 - 30 Indians might have been enrolled in my course.
Faculty
- The faculty-to-student ratio was low, but the seminars conducted for practical knowledge only had about 20 students maximum. That made one-to-one teaching and learning easier.
- The interaction with the professor in these seminars was beneficial to clear doubts and understand the practical implementation of the theory learned.
- The teaching methodology was terrific. I enjoyed every bit of the lecture and seminar in the entire course time.
- I admire my professor of Case studies in Strategic Management and program head "Dr. Ali Naqvi." The lectures and seminars that he conducted cleared many of my doubts, and I also understood what the examiners were expecting in the assessment essays (Format, language, flow, references, etc.)
Campus Life
- I lived near the West Campus of the University. The west campus was always very happening, now and then, there were events taking place. Other than the West campus, the university only had the East campus on the other end.
- The west campus had facilities like a Sports center, pubs, cafe, Library, open field, and the famous lake and LongBoi.
- I was not a part of any specific club, but every college on the west campus had its specific clubs. Wentworth College had a club, Vanbrugh College had a different club, James College had their club, and so on.
- All the students from these colleges had joined sports clubs which were available in the Sports Center.
- I was a member of the Hindu Association. There were Indian members from the university across courses. They hosted different activities and parties for Indian people during festivals like Diwali, etc.
Part Time Jobs
- I have no idea about Part-time jobs. I did not work part-time during my course time.
- Most of my Indian friends were working across McDonald's, Sainsbury's, Greggs, M&S, and Primark.
- The students typically earn the minimum wage, which is 11.44 GBP per hour. It was a bit difficult for students to secure a part-time job as the requirements were very few, and not everyone was accepted without experience or very little experience in the field.
- The usual process to apply for part-time is through LinkedIn, Indeed, or other such apps. However, the best way to apply for part-time is by directly going on the website of the desired organization, like Primark, and then applying directly from their website.
Placement
- I have no idea about Full-time jobs. I did not work full-time after my course time.
- I returned to India after my course ended.
- As for my batch mates, they are still working wherever they were working before, but now full-time
Accommodation
- During my application for accommodation, I opted for both on-campus and off-campus accommodations. In the end, I received an off-campus accommodation, but it was worth every pound spent. I found my accommodation through the university portal for applying for accommodations.
- The monthly rent varied from 724 GBP per month for months with 30 days and 748 GBP for months with 31 days. The maintenance and cleaning services were always ready to help with any issues, and all students also had access to the cinema room, laundry, student lounge, pool table, and PlayStation room. These facilities made living 51 weeks there very comfortable.
- The only challenge to be noted for accommodations is the time you start looking for it. Start looking for accommodations as early as possible so that you can receive multiple offers and select the accommodation according to your preference.
- My accommodation was approximately 1.3 km from the University. It was not far to travel by bus, so walking to the university was easy for me. There was not a specific accommodation where only Indian students lived. Indian students were spread out across multiple on & off campus accommodations.
Exams
- I did not take any exams required for my admission. I was exempted from taking IELTS because when I spoke with the delegate of Uni of York at one of the University fairs, she inquired about my English grades in high school (12th grade), and they were better than expectations. So, I had an exemption from IELTS.
- The documents required to complete the admission process were a Statement of Purpose, a Letter of Recommendation, and a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS).
Fees
- My fee structure was:
- Tuition fees: 26700 GBP (equal to approximately 26.6 lakh INR. Firstly, I had to pay a deposit of 2000 GBP. Then, I had to pay the fees in 3 installments. The first was 50% of the total fee amount minus the deposit in October 2023. Then, I had to pay 25% of the remaining fees by January 2024 and the remaining 25% by February 2024.
- My Total Accommodation fee was 8619 GBP for 51 weeks. I had to pay monthly installments. The per week rent was 169 GBP.
- My other monthly expenses included groceries, travel, and miscellaneous. On average, my monthly expenses were 80-100 GBP.
Scholarship
- I had applied for a scholarship (I don't remember the name), but I did not receive the scholarship as some of the factors were out of the eligibility criteria.
- The award amount of the scholarship was 2000 GBP, which is equal to approximately 2.1 lakh INR.
- I don't know any of my Indian batchmates receiving a scholarship as it was never a topic of conversation. I have no idea how many students receive scholarships each year.
