DU SOL (School of Open Learning) promotion rules when failing all subjects:

DU SOL is open learning — it operates differently from regular colleges:

  • SOL does NOT have strict year detention rules like regular universities. you can typically re-enroll in the next academic year
  • if you fail all subjects in Year 1, you are NOT automatically promoted to Year 2 with those failures. you would need to reappear in failed subjects
  • SOL allows students to carry backlog subjects and re-appear in subsequent examination cycles (June and December)
  • you can re-register for failed subjects and attempt them while simultaneously attending Year 2 if SOL allows concurrent study — check with SOL directly as this depends on the program

honestly: the best approach is to contact your SOL regional/study center and ask specifically about your situation. SOL policies can vary by program and have been updated multiple times. visit sol.du.ac.in or your nearest SOL study center for definitive guidance on re-enrollment and subject clearing options.

DU SOL promotion despite failing all subjects — this is a common panic question, and the answer depends on your specific year and program.

SOL DU promotion policy:

  • SOL follows a grace/ex-student system, not a strict year-lock for all failures.
  • Under the annual system: If you fail in all subjects of Year 1, you typically do NOT automatically move to Year 2. You are classified as an "Ex-Student" and must clear Year 1 subjects before Year 2 registration.
  • However: SOL allows students to appear as ex-students (compartment) in supplementary exams. You register for Year 2 only after clearing (or having cleared enough) Year 1 papers.

Practical reality:

  • There is some flexibility at SOL depending on the number of failed subjects. In some cases, SOL allows provisional registration for Year 2 while clearing Year 1 papers simultaneously — check with SOL admission office for your specific year.
  • Policy changes happen — SOL's current rules for your batch are confirmed at sol.du.ac.in or in person at the SOL campus (Vikas Marg, Delhi).

Maximum duration: SOL allows a maximum of 4-5 years to complete a 3-year program (varies by program). Failing one year doesn't mean you're out — you have time to clear papers.

Bottom line: Failing all subjects is serious but not permanent at SOL. You'll likely need to clear Year 1 subjects before formal Year 2 enrollment. Attend SOL's exam section in person for the most accurate guidance specific to your batch year and program.

Bcom pass from University of Delhi

No, you won’t be promoted to next year in DU SOL, if you fail in all subjects. You will have to repeat that year. You will be promoted to the next year if you fail in less than 50% of the examinations. You will have to take the back examination for those subjects next year.

After reading the reviews about this online, I can say that if you fail the majority of the subjects, you will not be promoted at all.

Students failing less than 50% of the exams, for example, you have failed in 8 subjects but passed in 5, then there is a chance of you getting promoted. Though you will have to give the exams in the following semester, failing which you will get promoted but have to repeat the exams again every semester.

If you fail in one or more subjects in your last semester, then you have to wait a year-long for the next exam, after which you will receive your degree.
