Ans. The scope of Mining is very limited and can be accessed only if you are truly interested in Mining and are serious about pursuing a career in the same. I suggest you pursue higher education in Mining from an elite foreign university like Colorado School of Mines, Royal School of Mines, and University of New South Wales. This will nurture your technical skills to the best. Another suggestion in this regard is that you can also go for ISM. The enthusiasm for Mining at ISM is like nowhere else. However, if you are after a good package rather than pursuing your enthusiasm, then IIT KGP is a better option. IIT KGP has an abundance of opportunities for the students academic environment is second to none. It offers extensive exposure and is thus most preferred by Engineering students of all branches.  As far as recruiters are concerned, a large number of them offer jobs to students at IIT KGP mainly because of the credibility of the Institute irrespective of the branch. Also, very few companies offer core jobs in Mining. Therefore, most mining students end up with non-core jobs. Some Core Companies for Mining visiting IIT KGP are Tata Steel Coal India ltd Vedanta Resources Jindal Steel Ltd The average CTC is around 8 LPA.  Read more

Ques. Which is better, an IIT KGP CSE dual degree or an IIT Roorkee CSE B.Tech?

Ans. Without any second thoughts, choose IIT Roorkee CSE B. Tech over IIT KGP CSE dual degree because dual degrees are usually less preferred by companies coming for placements. It’s better to do MTech after BTech than to opt for a dual degree. The main reason is that in Masters you are open to changing your branch in case your interest goes to another field. But a dual degree means you will be studying the same field with no option of changing in between. Another major disadvantage of a dual degree is that you are not eligible to change your branch to a 4-year program irrespective of your CGPA You will see your batchmates leaving a year before you and getting offers and settling well before you. IIT KGP no doubt is older and better than IIT Roorkee in every aspect. But as far as the program is concerned, a dual degree is not worth spending so many years at all.Read more

Both IIT Kharagpur CSE and IIT Delhi Electrical Engineering courses are well recognized in India.  IIT Kharagpur is an ideal option for B.Tech Computer Science & Engineering as its CSE department is regarded as one of the best in India. This means that you’ll receive quality education from talented faculty members. Apart from that, you’ll receive excellent research opportunities.  The CSE department at our college is known for offering the best curriculum which includes different topics like Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Algorithms, and more.  The placement of CSE branch at IIT Kharagpur is very good with almost all the students getting placed at good packages. The highest package offered is around INR 2 CPA , and the average package offered to the students is around INR 26 LPA to INR 28 LPA. The percentage of placement for CSE branch at IIT Kharagpur is around 95% to 100%. If you wish to study B.Tech CSE, IIT Kharagpur is a great choice, in terms of both academics and placements. Read more

Ques. Should I join IIT Kharagpur mining engineering just for IIT Tag?

Ans. Joining a certain branch that you are not even interested in just for the IIT tag is not the most logical decision. One usually decides on a certain branch for 3 reasons; either to get a good package or to pursue your area of interest or to follow the majority. However, in the case of Mining Engineering, this is not the case at all. You won’t be available to avail either of these benefits because of its low demand. In fact you will end up with the following circumstances You will have to work extremely hard in the first year in order to get a branch change In case you are unable to get a branch change, you will start running after POR, join different clubs to work on your non Engineering abilities. During placements you will be more inclined towards Non-Core placements because of your aversion to Mining. Still, if you are adamant about getting into IIT, then join only if  You want to work in analytics, consult or analyst after 4 years instead of Engineering  If you want to pursue MBA from an IIM If you want to switch your field after graduation. The reason why I am suggesting you give up Engineering is that with Mining, you can literally pursue anything other than Engineering. So it’s better you make up your mind for the same or apply to other institutes.Read more

Ans. IIT Indore CSE is a well-established branch and the program is rigorous with numerous opportunities. It's the backbone of the institute especially because of the rich coding culture it promotes. Here are a few pros and cons to make you understand the program better Pros: IIT Indore CSE has highly qualified faculty that are amongst the most experienced in India.  The institute is well known for its rich coding culture and the ACM ICPC achievements are a source of motivation for many.  Being a part of the IT family, it definitely does well in the infrastructure aspect.  IIT Indore provides excellent opportunities to its students and many are able to make it into Ivy League Universities. IIT Indore provides excellent undergraduate research opportunities and has many foreign collaborations. IIT Indore CSE placements are great and during 2022 placements the CSE branch managed to secure 100% placements with the highest CTC of BTech at INR 48.5 LPA and the average at INR 30.32 LPA Cons: IIT Indore has a small batch size meaning you have fewer geniuses around you. The small batch size makes it harder to develop an all-around coding culture.  In all, IIT Indore CSE is a great branch and should be considered a good option.Read more

Here is exactly why you should give more preference to IIT Indore than IIT Patna.  The faculties are very approachable and cooperative. They guide you to do projects and even motivate you for research work. Additionally, they teach you tactics to clear GRE and GATE for top universities and PSU respectively. Such kind of guidance isn’t available at every institute. The faculty-to-student ratio is great around 12 - 13 faculties for 40 students. This helps the students to get individual attention from faculty who track the personal and individual growth of every student.  IIT Indore has ties with the University of Stuttgart, Germany enabling students to do internships in the second year.  The students' demands are given due importance and the HODs bring all necessary changes demanded by the students to make things easy.  IIT Indore being new has top-notch labs with all modern equipment and instruments. Ans. In general, it is better to choose the branch of your choice. Given below are a few trade-offs of the two choices given on the question which may help you in making the decision.  MEMS - IIT Indore: Administration: IIT Indore belongs to the 2008-09 batch of IITs. Although it can’t be compared with older IITs but it has made remarkable progress in this short span of time. The administration and departments are well-settled. Extra-curricular at the institute are also developing with time. In 4-5 years, the institute is expected to have a great future. Course: BTech MEMS at IIT Indore is fairly new and the duration of the existence of the course is the same as the B Tech Electrical course at IIT Bhilai. However, the MEMS department has been functioning for a while at IIT Indore. As a department it has experience. The faculties are great.  Placements: MEMS has a lower placement rate as compared to other core branches of engineering. Metallurgy and Material Science is a niche field of study and the degree outcome is more research-oriented.  Change of Branch: However, you can change your branch to Electrical or Mechanical from MEMES at IIT I, if you work hard in your 1st year. Changing to CS is always difficult because of the competition. Electrical at IIT Bhilai: Facilities: IIT Bhilai was established back in 2016. It is only 4 years old. Electrical is a core Engineering discipline with better career prospects. But the disadvantage of this choice is the institute. You will have a few seniors in your branch and temporary faculties. Extracurricular: You will have good opportunities to start events, clubs, in the institute. On the other hand, the future at this institute is a bit uncertain. Campus Life: The institute also does not have a proper campus. You will not have a proper campus life for the next 4 years.  The table below shows a brief overview of the two institutes. Particulars IIT Indore IIT Bhilai Average CTC 17 LPA 11.22 LPA Seats 53 54 Fees INR 9.15 Lakh INR 4.90 Lakh One of my friends had an option between Mechanical at IIT Indore and CS at a new IIT. He chose Mechanical at IIT Indore. Judging by his experience it is safe to say that he made the right decision at least for 2-3 more years.  The choice is up to you if you would rather trade off on the branch or on the institution. If you are confident you can secure a good future from the limited opportunities a new IIT can offer, you should go for it.Read more

Ans. My brother was in a similar dilemma last year when he had to choose between MnC IIT Guwahati and CSE IIT Indore. Eventually, he went for IIT Indore CSE. The main reason he decided against going for the MnC program was his lack of interest in Math. And when we talk about Math at IIT, trust me when I say it’s at another level. It’s purely proof-based and high-level Math that can be handled only by true Math lovers. The academic workload is also high with 60% Math and 40% CS courses. Now, here are a few points that might convince you to join IIT Indore instead IIT Indore qualified for ACM-ICPC World Finals thrice. This in itself is quite an achievement considering this event's importance. As per HackerRank, IIT Indore is said to have the best coders in the whole country. Additionally, it’s at the 8th position globally for the best coders IIT Indore has an extensive alumni base who completed their Master's from top foreign universities like Stanford, Caltech, University of Columbia. Many talented alumni also increase the credibility of the institute by working at reputed firms like Google and Facebook. This year, the CS department recorded 100% placements with the highest and average packages standing at INR 48.5 LPA and INR 30.32 LPA respectively.
