A low rank in JEE Advanced 2026 does not close the door on IITs or IISc. Several IIT branches and the IISc BS Research programme remain open through JoSAA final rounds for students with ranks above 10,000 in the General category and significantly higher ranks in reserved categories.
JoSAA 2026 conducts multiple seat allotment rounds for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes. Students with moderate or low ranks often overlook genuine options at newer IITs, IIT ISM Dhanbad and IISc Bangalore, where closing ranks in Round 5 are substantially higher than at older IITs. Knowing which branches stay open and how to use category benefits can change an outcome significantly.
- JoSAA 2026 is expected to conduct 5 allotment rounds for IITs and IISc, based on 2025 trends
- New IITs such as IIT Dharwad, IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati and IIT Bhilai have expected Round 5 closing ranks above 15,000 for Civil Engineering
- IIT ISM Dhanbad Mining Engineering expected closing rank: around 12,000 to 16,000 (General, based on 2025 data)
- IISc BS Research programme expected General category closing rank: approximately 2,500 to 4,500
- OBC-NCL students effectively gain a rank multiplier of approximately 2.5x to 3x compared to General category
- All data below is expected or based on 2025 trends and may vary for 2026
