SNU BA (Research) History FAQs
Ques. Is BA (Research) History still offered at SNU, or has it been discontinued?
Ans. The standalone BA (Research) in History program at SNU has been discontinued for fresh admissions. As confirmed by the official SNU Department of History and Archaeology page (updated for 2026), the department now only lists the new B.A. (Research) in Interdisciplinary Humanities and Social Sciences (IHS) and the Ph.D. in History and Archaeology. Students who wish to study History and Archaeology at SNU should apply for the IHS program and choose the "Archaeology, Heritage and Historical Studies" major. For any clarification, contact [email protected] or call 8826278400.
Ques. What is the new IHS program at SNU, and how does it compare to the old BA (Research) History?
Ans. The B.A. (Research) in Interdisciplinary Humanities and Social Sciences (IHS) is SNU's newly launched program described as India's first of its kind. Unlike the old standalone BA (Research) History which focused exclusively on historical and archaeological studies, the IHS program provides a broader interdisciplinary foundation spanning natural sciences, social sciences, geopolitics, and humanities. Students can then specialize in one of three majors: Sustainability Studies, Archaeology, Heritage and Historical Studies, or Society, Culture and Technology. The IHS program carries a higher tuition fee (Rs. 6,00,000/year vs. Rs. 2,50,000/year for the old History program), but also comes with a special IHS Scholarship offering 100% tuition fee waiver to the top 10 admitted students.
Ques. What career options are available after studying History/Archaeology at SNU through the IHS program?
Ans. Students who specialize in Archaeology, Heritage and Historical Studies through the IHS program can pursue careers in academia (MA/PhD in History, Archaeology, or related fields), civil services (UPSC and state PSCs where History is a popular optional subject), museum curation and heritage management, archaeological survey and field work, journalism and media, publishing, policy research, and international organizations focused on cultural heritage. SNU's Career Development Cell (CDC) actively supports students with internship placements and career guidance from their 3rd year.
Ques. What is the fee difference between the old BA (Research) History and the new IHS program?
Ans. The old BA (Research) History program had a tuition fee of Rs. 2,50,000 per year (as per the 2024 fee structure), making the 4-year tuition total Rs. 10,00,000. The new IHS program has a tuition fee of Rs. 6,00,000 per year, making the 4-year tuition total Rs. 24,00,000 - significantly higher. However, the IHS program offers a special IHS Scholarship that gives the top 10 admitted students a 100% tuition fee waiver for all 4 years, which can substantially reduce the cost for meritorious students.
Ques. Does the IHS program at SNU have a research component like the old BA (Research) History?
Ans. Yes, the IHS program retains the research-oriented approach that is characteristic of all SNU undergraduate programs. Like other BA (Research) programs at SNU, students in the IHS program are expected to complete a supervised research component in their final year. The program also includes an Experiential Learning (EL) component of 8 credits, typically fulfilled through internships, field visits, or community work relevant to their chosen major. Students specializing in Archaeology, Heritage and Historical Studies will have access to SNU's Archaeology Lab, which contains artifacts and resources for field methods training.
Ques. Can students from any stream in Class 12 apply for the IHS program at SNU?
Ans. Yes, the IHS program at SNU is open to students from any stream in Class 12 (Science, Commerce, or Arts/Humanities), provided they meet the minimum eligibility of 65% aggregate in all subjects listed in the marksheet, with English as a mandatory subject. This is one of the key advantages of the IHS program over the old standalone BA (Research) History - it is truly stream-agnostic and welcomes students from diverse academic backgrounds who are interested in interdisciplinary humanities and social sciences education.
