Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore offers a 4-year full-time B.Tech (Biotechnology) programme under its self-supporting technology stream, introduced in 2002. The course spans 8 semesters with a total sanctioned strength of 78 seats (plus supernumerary NRI, Industrial, and Study in India quota seats), and is offered exclusively at the Agricultural College and Research Institute (AC&RI), Coimbatore campus. Admission is merit-based on Class 12 marks with no entrance examination for Tamil Nadu students, while students from other states must qualify through the ICAR entrance exam. The programme is popular for its strong interdisciplinary curriculum blending molecular biology, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, and agri-biotech, along with a mandatory 90-day industry/research internship (Biotechnology Work Experience) and an All India Educational Tour.

Admissions for the 2026-27 academic year are upcoming. Based on the 2025-26 cycle, online applications typically open in May-June following the announcement of Class 12 board results, with counselling conducted in July-August and college opening in September. The 2025-26 application portal closed on June 28, 2025, with counselling rounds held from July 9 to August 2025, and college opening on September 3, 2025. For 2026-27, similar timelines are expected; candidates should monitor the official portal at https://tnau.ucanapply.com for updates.

Key Points

  • The B.Tech Biotechnology programme is classified as a self-supporting technology course; the self-supporting fee component (Rs. 40,000 per semester) applies in addition to the standard technology semester fee.
  • The programme includes a mandatory Biotechnology Work Experience (Internship) of 90 days at reputed national or international institutes and industries, which is a distinctive feature not found in most university biotech programmes.
  • Students undertake an Institutional and Industrial Education Tour (All India Tour) to gain exposure to leading R&D institutes and biotech industries across the country.
  • The curriculum is designed with a problem-based and independent learning model, preparing students for both higher studies and industry placements in pharma, bioinformatics, agricultural biotech, and research sectors.
  • The programme is facilitated by the Centre for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, which has state-of-the-art laboratory and greenhouse facilities, digital libraries, e-classrooms, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Students who discontinue after completing the first year first semester are required to pay a discontinuation fee of Rs. 2,00,000 to TNAU.

TNAU B.Tech Biotechnology FAQs

Ques. Is there any entrance exam for B.Tech Biotechnology admission at TNAU, or is it purely merit-based?

Ans. For Tamil Nadu students, admission to B.Tech Biotechnology at TNAU is entirely merit-based on Class 12 marks - there is no entrance examination. The rank is calculated using a standardized formula based on marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (or relevant elective subjects), each converted to a score out of 50, giving a total out of 200. Students from other states are generally not eligible for general counselling; however, TNAU does not allocate ICAR quota seats to the B.Tech Biotechnology (self-supporting) programme, so out-of-state students have very limited pathways for admission.

Ques. What is the self-supporting fee in B.Tech Biotechnology, and why is it so much higher than other TNAU courses?

Ans. B.Tech Biotechnology at TNAU is classified as a self-supporting technology programme, which means it does not receive full government funding. As a result, an additional self-supporting fee of ₹40,000 per semester is charged over and above the standard technology semester fee. This brings the total semester fee to approximately ₹63,050 per semester (odd semesters), compared to around ₹23,050 for government-funded science programmes. Over 8 semesters, the total course fee works out to approximately ₹5.15 lakhs. Students should note that most state government community scholarships cover only the tuition fee component (₹4,500 per semester) and not the self-supporting fee.

Ques. What is the Biotechnology Work Experience (Internship) programme, and how does it work?

Ans. The Biotechnology Work Experience is a mandatory 90-day internship that all B.Tech Biotechnology students at TNAU must complete as part of their curriculum. Students are placed at reputed national and international research institutes, biotech companies, pharmaceutical firms, or agricultural research organizations. This is part of the ICAR-mandated READY (Rural Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana) programme. The internship is typically done in the final years of the programme and gives students hands-on exposure to real-world research and industrial processes. Students have previously interned at institutions like NCBS, CCMB, ICRISAT, and leading pharma companies.

Ques. What are the career options after completing B.Tech Biotechnology from TNAU?

Ans. Graduates of B.Tech Biotechnology from TNAU have diverse career pathways. They can pursue higher studies (M.Sc./M.Tech/MBA) in biotechnology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, or allied fields at premier institutes in India and abroad. In terms of employment, graduates find opportunities as research scientists or trainees at biotech firms, pharmaceutical companies, and agricultural research labs. Other career options include roles as Assistant Professors (after qualifying NET/SET), Patent Investigators, Banking personnel (especially in agri-banking), and entrepreneurship in biotech startups. The interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum also allows graduates to apply for civil services and other competitive examinations.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for B.Tech Biotechnology students at TNAU Coimbatore?

Ans. TNAU's main campus in Coimbatore has separate hostels for boys (6 hostels) and girls (4 hostels). All students are generally expected to reside in the hostel attached to their respective college. However, hostel accommodation is not guaranteed for all students and is subject to availability. In exceptional cases, the Dean may permit students to be day scholars. Students residing in the hostel are required to join the student-run mess (dividing system), where meal costs are shared equally among residents and vary each semester based on actual food costs. Students are not permitted to own or drive motorcycles/cars on campus.

Ques. Can students from the B.Tech Biotechnology programme at TNAU apply for the ICAR National Talent Scholarship?

Ans. No. The ICAR National Talent Scholarship is available only for students admitted through the ICAR supernumerary quota (20% of seats in select programmes). B.Tech Biotechnology at TNAU is a self-supporting programme, and ICAR quota seats are not allocated to this course. Therefore, students admitted to B.Tech Biotechnology at TNAU through general TNAU counselling are not eligible for the ICAR National Talent Scholarship. However, they remain eligible for all state government community scholarships (BC, MBC, SC, ST), TNAU merit scholarships, and other endowment scholarships offered by the university.

This is a little hard on us, the scholarship also varies for different caste like BC get little whereas SC gets more. see scholarship must be equal to all right? Or it should be based on marks and not on caste? The scholarship we get is from the Government of India
