TNAU: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 76 Reviews

Admission to this college is based on 12th Board exam marks, with additional pathways for students from other states through the All India entrance exam and the Indian Council for Agricultural Research. A rank list is published online, and admission is granted through a counseling process. The college, known for its agricultural education, boasts a favorable faculty-to-student ratio, with experienced faculty, many of whom are internationally trained scientists. Exams are held without schedule changes, requiring a minimum of 60 marks to pass and 80% attendance.

The fee structure varies by course and admission category, with regular courses being more budget-friendly. Local students generally pay around Rs. 200,000, while out-of-state fees can reach Rs. 1,000,000 unless reduced via the ICAR Examination. Tuition is Rs. 20,000 per semester, and the total four-year course cost may be up to Rs. 8,80,000. Hostel fees range from Rs. 36,000 to Rs. 50,000 annually. The college offers scholarships based on community, merit, and need, easing financial burdens.

Placement opportunities are strong, with 70-95% of students securing jobs, often post-8th semester, with salaries between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 40,000 per month. While B.Sc campus interviews are limited, support for government exams is robust, and top companies participate in recruitment. Entrepreneurship development and internships, including a village stay program, are emphasized.

TNAU B.Sc (Hons.) Agriculture FAQs

Ques. Is there any entrance exam for B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture admission at TNAU for Tamil Nadu students?

Ans. No, there is no entrance examination for Tamil Nadu native students seeking admission to B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture at TNAU. Admission is entirely merit-based on the aggregate marks obtained in the 10+2 qualifying examination (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Mathematics). Students simply need to apply online at https://tnau.ucanapply.com and participate in the online counselling process. Only candidates from other states seeking admission under the ICAR supernumerary quota (20% of seats) need to qualify the CUET (ICAR-UG) national entrance examination.

Ques. What is the difference between TNAU constituent colleges and affiliated colleges, and does it matter for fees and placement?

Ans. TNAU constituent colleges are government-run colleges directly under TNAU (such as AC&RI Coimbatore, AC&RI Madurai, etc.), while affiliated colleges are private institutions affiliated to TNAU. The fee structure differs significantly: constituent colleges charge Rs. 23,000 per semester (total approx. Rs. 1,95,675 for 4 years), while affiliated colleges charge higher fees (typically Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1,50,000 per year). In constituent colleges, 65% of seats are filled through TNAU counselling (TNAU quota) and 35% through management quota. The curriculum and degree are the same across all colleges, but constituent colleges generally have better infrastructure, research facilities, and placement support.

Ques. Can a student who has studied in a CBSE or ICSE board apply for TNAU B.Sc. Agriculture admission?

Ans. Yes, students from CBSE, ICSE, and other recognized boards can apply for TNAU B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture admission. However, their marks will be normalized as per the Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Educational Institutions Act, 2006 (G.O.M.S.190 and G.O.M.S.191 dated 16.05.2007) for ranking purposes. Additionally, CBSE/ISCE students pay a slightly higher one-time fee of Rs. 11,325 (vs. Rs. 10,925 for TNHSC students) due to a higher mark sheet verification charge of Rs. 500. Tamil Nadu nativity is still required for general counselling seats.

Ques. What happens if a student wants to change their college after getting allotted in TNAU counselling?

Ans. TNAU's online counselling system has an "upward movement" option. If a student is allotted a college but prefers a higher-ranked choice, they can opt for "Accept and Upward Movement" during counselling. If a vacancy arises in their higher-preference college/course within the same community category, they will be automatically moved up. Once moved to a higher choice, the student cannot revert to the original allotment. Students who opt for "Accept and Join" (no upward movement) will be admitted to the allotted college and will not be considered for further movement. Campus transfer is not permissible for candidates admitted under special reservation quotas.

Ques. What are the career options after completing B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture from TNAU?

Ans. B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture graduates from TNAU have a wide range of career options. In the government sector, they can appear for Agricultural Officer, Assistant Director of Agriculture, and similar posts through TNPSC and UPSC examinations. In the private sector, opportunities exist in agri-input companies (seeds, fertilizers, pesticides), agri-tech startups, food processing companies, and export-oriented agribusiness firms. Graduates can also pursue higher education through M.Sc. (Agriculture) at TNAU or other SAUs, or appear for ICAR-JRF/SRF examinations for research fellowships. Banking sector (NABARD, cooperative banks, agricultural officers in commercial banks) is another popular career path. TNAU alumni have also been placed as Agricultural Officers in state cooperative banks and as Assistant Directors of Horticulture in government departments.

Ques. Is the 7.5% Government School Quota available at affiliated colleges too, and how does it work?

Ans. Yes, the 7.5% Government School Quota is available at both constituent and affiliated colleges of TNAU. Under this quota, 7.5% of seats are reserved on a preferential basis for students who have continuously studied from Class 6 to Class 12 in Tamil Nadu State Government Schools. Candidates must provide their EMIS (Educational Management Information System) number at the time of online application; the Government of Tamil Nadu verifies eligibility based on this number. Students without an EMIS number must upload a bona fide certificate in the prescribed format (Appendix-VIII). This quota is separate from the communal reservation and is applied within each community category, meaning SC/ST/BC/MBC students from government schools get the benefit within their respective community quota.

Our college fees was 1.2 lakhs a year and hostel was mandatory as it was in a village. The hostel was 80k a year and fees were allowed to be paid in installments of 4. So it was easy to pay the fees as it wasn't needed to be paid upfront.

The college fees were divided into 8 semesters with odd semesters at 20500 and even semesters at 18500. Except that there were also three other quota students called ICAR, industrial, and NRI.
