NIMHANS competes with AIIMS and PGIMER for top INI CET rankers. Cutoffs for MD Psychiatry at NIMHANS consistently fall in the top 50 to 100 INI CET ranks.

BSc / MSc / M.Phil / MPH / PhD Admission (NIMHANS Entrance Test)

  • B.Sc Nursing eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Minimum 45% marks required. Age minimum 17 years

NIMHANS is the only Institute of National Importance in India dedicated solely to mental health and neurosciences, which makes it the de facto top-ranked institution for its specific domain regardless of overall rankings.

NIMHANS Fellowships and Stipends

NIMHANS provides competitive monthly stipends to its research and clinical trainees. These are funded through institute funds, central government grants, and national science funding agencies.

ProgrammeStipend / SupportNotes

Students from SC, ST, OBC, and economically weaker sections are also eligible for central government scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal. The heavily subsidised fee structure at NIMHANS (as low as INR 20,000 for M.Sc programmes) means most students do not require additional financial aid beyond the stipend.

NIMHANS Campus and Infrastructure

NIMHANS is located on 135 acres on Hosur Road in Bengaluru. The campus integrates a clinical hospital, research laboratories, residential quarters, and academic buildings in a single contiguous space. The 1,000-bed hospital is the largest dedicated neuroscience and psychiatry hospital in South Asia.

Key infrastructure includes the NIMHANS Central Library, described as one of the largest mental health libraries in the world, with a comprehensive collection of journals, archives, and digital databases in psychiatry and neurosciences. The campus has specialised research facilities including a Brain Imaging Unit, electrophysiology laboratories, neurochemistry labs, and a Human Genetics lab.

Residential accommodation is available on campus for residents, fellows, and students, with preference given to outstation candidates. The campus also has a student cafeteria, sports grounds, and a health unit. NIMHANS is 10 km from Bengaluru City Railway Station, with direct access via Hosur Road and metro connectivity at Bommanahalli.

What should I prefer between AIIMS Delhi and NIMHANS for an MD in psychiatry?

Muskan Shafi

AIIMS Delhi and NIMHANS Bangalore are both prominent medical institutes, being ranked 1st and 4th, respectively in India in the medical category by NIRF 2023. Both the institutes are equally good for MD, however, for an MD in Psychiatry, NIMHANS is considered to be a better option than AIIMS Delhi.

One must prioritize the branch over the college in case of their degree, especially in medicine. One should look after the other aspects such as the course faculty, facilities provided for the course, and lastly the clinical experience and exposure. NIMHANS is renowned all over India for its excellence in Psychiatry and is one of the top institutions for mental health and neuroscience education. Since NIMHANS specializes in Neurosciences, it is claimed to have a stronger focus and approach towards specialized learning and training in Psychiatry than AIIMS Delhi.

Through AIIMS Delhi is the most popular choice for every medical aspirant, but for MD in Psychiatry is indeed the best option given the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience it has to share for courses in Mental Health. Admission to MD in Psychiatry at both AIIMS Delhi and NIMHANS is based on the score in INI CET.

How is the life of a resident doctor pursuing neurosurgery at NIMHANS after an MBBS? Can we get a sneak peek into work hours, leisure activities, and culture at the institute?

Sapna Malik
Nivedita TrivediNIMHANS 2022

Here is the routine of a Neurosurgery resident at NIMHANS.

The department is subdivided into 6 units, each of which is headed by an internationally acclaimed faculty member. The day of a resident starts at around 6 AM with a routine assessment of patients in all the wards under one’s respective unit for the month.

This is followed by academics which start at 8 AM. It runs for 1-1 ½ hours. During this time, the cases posted for surgery are presented by senior residents. These are then discussed among faculty members and residents to reach a decision for the optimal treatment of that case.

After this, the senior residents head to the OT complex, and junior residents present rounds to the faculty. Decisions on further treatment/discharge are made during the rounds.

Junior residents then perform ward procedures like External Ventricular Drain Insertion, Lumbar drains, Lumbar Punctures, Shunt Taps, Fontanelle Tap, Tracheostomies, etc. under supervision. This is followed by evening rounds by the faculty/ senior residents. After these, any leftover work is completed. The evening ends with a post-op call to the respective consultant, and the duty ends at 9 PM when the night duty resident takes over.

The OPD for a particular unit is held on a fixed day. It is also a casualty call day for the unit. Life as a neurosurgery resident is so busy that even having meals is like a luxury.

NIMHANS will train you to practice evidence-based medicine and keep updated with all the recent developments in your field. It is one of the best places in India to practice Neurosurgery residency.

How good is the PhD neurophysiology program at NIMHANS?

Pradnya TripathiNIMHANS (2022)

One of my friends is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Neurophysiology at NIMHANS. As per the information he shared, the department has 8 faculties. Only 4 students can enroll under one professor for a Ph.D. The batch size is around 50 per batch every year.

The duration of the coursework is 6 months which is centralized. PhD students are exposed to a wide range of topics in the field of neuroscience. The theoretical knowledge imparted is only basic just to give an idea of the field and no topic-specific modules are taught. One will get exposed to the basics of research methodology.

Once the coursework comes to an end, students are supposed to choose their guides and start working on a specific topic for the Ph.D. Other learning modules include classroom discussions, writing up Ph.D. protocol to get feedback, and techniques required for the Ph.D. work. I have seen many MPhil students returning for a PhD program in the Department of Neurophysiology.

The Department of Neurophysiology offers a 2 year MPhil program. Usually, students of MPhil pursue the same topic for their PhD. One seminar and one journal club presentation are conducted every week.

Overall, the course is well-structured and renders enough freedom to do the research work. You can also consider taking online courses in statistics and signal processing if you are interested in research work.

How do I secure a DM neurology seat in NIMHANS?

Sabeer Chalana
Sagar DikshitNIMHANS 2022

It’s quite challenging to secure a DM Neurology in NIMHANS. One needs a very good rank under the AIR-5 range. NIMHANS conducts the best neurology-centered examination for students.

During the initial 2 years, you will hardly be able to study amidst the chaos of problems related to neurology. It’s only after 2 years when you come back to college that you will be able to study theoretical neurology topics like neurosurgery, pathology, etc.

If you are a research enthusiast, you will also have access to the Research Institute for Neurology. Additionally, you can work on some projects related to neurology like control of the human brain, dog motion control, etc.

All this combined may help you get a seat in SM Neurology at NIMHANS.

What is the stipend paid to a PhD in clinical psychology student from NIMHANS?

Raktim Tarafdar
Pradnya TripathiNIMHANS (2022)

Usually, the stipend paid to a PhD in Clinical Psychology student (external category) at MIMHANS is around INR 31,000 for the first two years and INR 35,000 for the remaining 3 years.

The only drawback is that students who have already done an MPhil will get only an institute fellowship for 3 years and they will be considered as SRFs with a salary of INR 28,000. These students get to stay in the hostel by paying a monthly rent of INR 250 for institute fellows and an HRA amount for external fellows.
