Ques. Can I pursue IGNOU PhD in Psychology in part-time mode while working as a psychologist or counsellor?
Ans. Yes, IGNOU offers the PhD in Psychology in both full-time and part-time modes. Part-time scholars can continue their employment while conducting research. However, you must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer, which is mandatory for attending the interview and for admission. You must also attend the mandatory coursework at IGNOU Headquarters, New Delhi, for the first six months, with at least 80% attendance. Your employer must confirm in the NOC that you will be relieved from duty to complete the coursework if required.
Ques. What research areas are available for PhD Psychology at IGNOU?
Ans. IGNOU's PhD in Psychology under SOSS covers a broad range of research areas including clinical psychology, counselling psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, organisational/industrial psychology, health psychology, positive psychology, and community psychology. The specific research area you can pursue depends on the expertise and availability of faculty supervisors at IGNOU. Ques. How many seats are available for PhD Psychology at IGNOU, and what is the reservation policy?
Ans. For the July 2025 session, 20 seats were available in Psychology: UR=8, SC=3, ST=2, OBC=5, EWS=2. Additionally, 5% of seats (horizontal reservation) are reserved for Persons with Disabilities (with not less than 40% disability), adjusted against the appropriate category. The seat matrix may vary each year and is published in the official PhD admission notification. Ques. Where are the PhD interviews conducted, and what is the interview format?
Ans. IGNOU PhD interviews are conducted only at IGNOU Headquarters, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. There is no provision for online interviews. The interview panel evaluates candidates on three components: Research Methodology (40% weightage), Subject Domain (40% weightage), and Communication Skills (20% weightage). Candidates are required to bring original identity proof (Aadhar Card, Voter ID, Passport, or Government-issued ID) and all original academic documents. A research proposal is also expected.
Ques. Is an IGNOU MA Psychology degree sufficient to apply for PhD Psychology at IGNOU?
Ans. Yes, an MA in Psychology from IGNOU (or any other recognised university) with at least 55% marks is eligible for PhD Psychology admission at IGNOU. IGNOU's MA Psychology is a well-regarded programme, and many IGNOU MA Psychology graduates have successfully pursued PhD research. However, you must also have a valid UGC-NET score (JRF or non-JRF) in Psychology to be eligible for the PhD admission process.
