Which college should I join among IISER Pune, IIT Madras Physics, IIT Kanpur Physics or IIT Engineering Physics?
If you are truly passionate about Physics, be it theoretical or practical, you should choose either IISER Pune or IISER Kolkata. IISER Kolkata is the best option for Physics, while IISER Pune is well-known for its overall academics and infrastructure. Here are the reasons why you should prefer IISER over IIT.
- Most students joining IIT, aim to get corporate jobs. If you are interested in the subject and want to do actual research on it, IISER is the best place. You will get to meet like-minded people too.
- You can check the faculty and the curriculum for Physics at IIT. Even IIT Kanpur which is known for its Physics department puts more emphasis on applied Physics. Most IITs leave out theory-oriented courses like ‘Cosmology’. Also, you won’t get the lab infrastructure similar to IISER at IITs. The labs at IISERs are specifically designed for research works. From the 5th semester onwards, the course curriculum at IITs become quite different. It becomes more technology-oriented. While students at IISERs are required to do a one-year-long research project.
Based on the performance over the last few years, IISER Pune will be better than IISER Kolkata.
What is it like to study Physics at IIT Kharagpur?
A student at IIT Kharagpur can study Physics even without attending classes or going to labs. I think the m experience in any department depends mainly on 3 factors

Your own motivation: You either get inspired or are naturally motivated. The former does not need much external pressure. This means you can function well even without good facilities or professors. However, those who lack such inspiration need constant motivation to depend on good professors to develop an interest in the course and perform well. Physics is a difficult subject and one cannot solely depend upon self-study. So physics at IIT Kharagpur is not for those who lack inherited motivation.
Professors: Sadly, IIT Kharagpur has only a few professors that make it into the category of experienced and learned. Most professors are good at research but lack teaching skills. If the second and third-year subjects are not taught by good professors, you will face quite a bit of a downfall in this path.
Department:
Any particular department can be evaluated on the basis of labs, workload, grading, placements, and scope for higher studies.
- Labs: The labs are neither too good nor too bad and are just considered average at IIT Kharagpur.
- Workload: The workload is huge with 5 subjects every semester till the 4th year and 4 labs every week.
- Grading: Absolute Grading system is followed which is quite challenging.
- Placements: No core companies visit the campus for placements for the Physics department. So the only option left is to sit for non-core companies like IT, Analytics, Finance, Operations, and Management. However, you can get into these companies with your own set of skills provided that you stand out among recruiters.
- Scope for higher studies: There is a lot of scope for higher studies provided that you have good internships, projects, and grades.
Peer group:
Having passionate people in your batch adds to the overall learning experience. The peer group in KGP comprises usually hostel friends or friends from societies or clubs.

Should I take electrical engineering in new IITs like Ropar, Patna, and Dhanbad or physics in old IITs like Kharagpur and Roorkee or computer science at NIT Hamirpur?
Anyone getting admission to any IIT should not consider NITs then. It’s true that the old IITs have better infrastructure and brand value than tier-2 IITs but these new IITs are still in their development stage and haven’t reached their conclusion. Considering their huge growth over the past decade, they will reach new heights in the future
The new IITs provide better opportunities and freedom to students as the foundation of the college isn’t very strong so they build it alongside. The students grow and develop their personalities along with the growing institute. There is no compromise in the quality of education as the faculty is recruited after tremendous filtering.
The branch is more important than the college so don’t choose a less preferred branch in an old IIT just for the brand value rather go for the branch of your choice in a new IIT.
As for Physics, it requires genuine commitment and interest. Go for it only if you are certain of a career in it as the options in this branch are limited in contrast to Electrical Engineering. That being said, IIT Ropar is one of the best second-generation IITs, and its curriculum is very flexible and the location is also great. So my final recommendation would be to go for IIT Ropar Electrical.

Which DU college is better for physics: ARSD or Maitreyi?
ARSD and Maitreyi, both are reputed colleges under Delhi University. You can choose either of these two institutes for pursuing a degree in Physics. Both have a decent faculty base and lab infrastructure.
However, comparably ARSD is better than Maitreyi for pursuing a degree in Science. According to IndiaToday 2021 ranking, ARSD was ranked 16 for Science.
