How have the placement stats been for the metallurgical branch in MNIT Jaipur?

Sk
Shubhangi kailas Posted On : October 10th, 2023
MNIT Jaipur

Instead of presenting stats, I will talk about the ground reality placements for this branch.

There are limited job opportunities in the core sector for Metallurgy students. Due to a lack of options during placement season, 9-pointers too end up in non-core sectors. Even GATE offers limited job opportunities. More than often, even 2-digit rank holders fail to get a call from PSUs.

But this branch is good for a career in research. You’ll have access to world-class facilities at labs like Material Research Center (MRC). Other than that, the Top 5 students from Metallurgy receive two-year research scholarships from the Ministry of Steel.

Maintaining a high CGPA is quite easy for B.Tech Metallurgy students of MNIT. These grades are important while applying for an MS at reputed universities.

Metallurgy from MNIT Jaipur is a good choice for future researchers. In terms of campus placements though, it's not a good choice.

Has anyone changed branches from metallurgy to other branches in NIT Warangal?

Yes, most of the students prefer a branch change from metallurgy to their branch of interest. But you need to strive hard throughout the year. The competition is high here, and you need to be among the top 5, otherwise, you will end up in the same department. The grade matters a lot here, so try to be consistent, determined, and motivated.

Can I take metallurgy in MNIT Jaipur and do coding to get a good placement?

SG
Souvick Gupta Posted On : October 10th, 2023
MNIT Jaipur

You’ll find ample students at MNIT Jaipur who wanted to pursue CS but ended up in Metallurgy. This happens because of low JEE Mains rank or wrong choice filling.

You can maintain good grades and simultaneously practice coding to secure a good IT job. While some IT companies are open exclusively to CSE and ECE students, others give equal opportunity to all the branches. Metallurgy at MNIT doesn’t offer good core placements, so its students mostly end up in non core jobs.

You can definitely take up Metallurgy at MNIT and work on your coding skills side by side.

How is metallurgy and material science at NIT Surathkal? How are the placements?

MS

The Metallurgy branch at NITK is quite good. It is not very stressful and the curriculum is rich. You’ll get ample time to participate in co-curricular activities.

Now, let’s talk about the placement prospects. Metallurgy has more jobs in the government sector rather than the private sector. Core companies do visit the NIT Surathkal campus for placements each year. But to get placed in them, you’ll have to be in the top 10 students of your batch. Each Metallurgy batch consists of around 40 students.

For core jobs, maintain a good grip on your subjects. The interviews for these profiles are based on technical rather than soft skills. You can also apply for government companies off campus. The field has little competition in comparison to other branches. With good self preparation, you can get placed in one of the IT companies that visit NITK for placements, and are open to all the branches.

NIT Surathkal is a great college. It will offer you plenty of exposure and opportunities.

Therefore, I would recommend you to join Metallurgy at NITK.

Which branch should I choose, NIT Jamshedpur metallurgy, production, or civil?

GG
Gargi Gupta Posted On : September 1st, 2023
Studied at NIT Jamshedpur

There are several things you should consider while comparing these branches.

During 2023 placements, 97.29% of students were placed in the Civil branch. Metallurgy students received 100% placements while production students received 97.61% placements.

The salary package stats for these branches are as described below-

NIT Jamshedpur

Out of the three, Metallurgy has the highest placement percentage.

TATA Steel offers good placements to Metallurgy students of NIT Jamshedpur. Other than them, Vedanta, Jindal Steel, Hindalco, and Tata Metaliks are some other companies that offer placements to Metallurgy students of NIT Jamshedpur.

Metallurgy is a good choice for higher studies. Many students from this branch perform really well in GATE exams.

I recommend you consider joining Metallurgy at NIT Jamshedpur because it offers good future prospects. However, also talk to some seniors from the other branches before making a final decision.

Should I take NIT Suratkal IT or IIT BHU metallurgy?

PG
Prajukta Ghose Posted On : April 6th, 2023
Studied at the Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi

If you're trying to decide between NIT Suratkal and IIT(BHU) Varanasi, here are some points to consider:

  • First, think about your interests. If you're interested in coding and tech, NIT Suratkal may be the better option for you.
  • However, if the branch isn't a major factor in your decision, you may want to consider IIT(BHU) Varanasi. The IIT brand and alumni network are both very strong, and the Metallurgy Department at IIT(BHU) is one of the best and oldest in India.
  • That being said, if job placements are a top priority for you, it's worth noting that Metallurgy may not be the best choice in terms of placement opportunities. Only a few core companies come to IIT(BHU) Varanasi to recruit metallurgy students, and the packages they offer are often below average. Other students end up being placed in non-core sectors, like consulting and analytics.
  • On the other hand, while NIT Suratkal IT may not offer the best placement packages either, you'll likely have more opportunities in the field of IT, which you'll have studied in college.
  • Another advantage of IIT(BHU) Varanasi is the potential for higher studies opportunities. You'll have plenty of time to prepare for exams like CAT, GRE, GMAT, and even IAS if you're interested.
  • Finally, if you're willing to put in the work during your first semester at IIT(BHU) Varanasi, you can start off in Metallurgy and then switch to a different branch with better opportunities later on.

Consider your interests and priorities when making your decision. If coding and tech excite you, go for NIT Suratkal. But if you're looking for a strong alumni network and potential for higher studies opportunities, IIT(BHU) Varanasi may be the better choice.

How is the life of a metallurgical engineer at VNIT Nagpur?

AG
Akriti Gupta Posted On : November 3rd, 2023
lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

In reality, VNIT Nagpur does not stand up to its reputation. Being a student of Metallurgy at VNIT, I can shed some light on the life of students in my department-

  1. I was told that the Metallurgy department of VNIT Nagpur is very famous, and among the best in India. However, in reality, many people don’t even recognize the name of VNIT, and refer to the college as VRCE.
  2. The schedule of Metallurgy students is busy, with lack of free time for entrance preparation. Those who can’t mug things up, face a hard time getting decent grades.
  3. Though metallurgy has lots of scope for research, the faculty only focuses on homeworks and journals, rather than encouraging research aptitude among the students.
  4. The faculty is very educated and experienced, but they put no dedication towards creating talented engineers like themselves.
  5. The college doesn’t offer good placements and good opportunities for Metallurgy graduates. Thus, one has to give up and try finding jobs in other sectors.
  6. The one advantage is that some professors of the department are student friendly.

Based on my experience, I would say that the life of metallurgy students isn’t good at VNIT Nagpur.

How is VNIT Nagpur metallurgy?

MD
Mohor Dutta Posted On : November 3rd, 2023
B.Tech from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur (2019)

VNIT Nagpur has one of the best Metallurgy Departments in India. The college offers a good campus, and Nagpur is a pleasant city to live in.

The department faculty is good, and labs are well-equipped. The problem lies in the branch, and not the college. The requirement of metallurgists is low in India. Because of this, the scenario is poor for core metallurgy placements.

Tata Steel and JSW do not recruit B.Tech Metallurgy students from VNIT. However, non core companies come in and fill the gap. Brands like Capgemini, L&T Infotech, etc. give equal opportunities to B.Tech Metallurgy students.

VNIT Nagpur offers very few core placements in Metallurgy. However, it offers a decent faculty and other facilities to its B.Tech Metallurgy students.
