IIM Bangalore received approval from the State Board for Wildlife for its 42-acre infrastructure project near Bannerghatta National Park. The first phase involves construction of new student facilities at Manthralingapura in Anekal taluk.

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has received approval from the State Board for Wildlife for its plan to develop a 42-acre campus near Bannerghatta National Park. The standing committee of the State Board for Wildlife recommended the project on Thursday, marking a significant milestone for the institute's expansion plans. The first phase involves construction of new facilities for students at Manthralingapura of Jigani hobli in Anekal taluk, Bengaluru Urban district.
The proposed campus project involves a built-up area of over 20,000 square meters and is located 303 metres away from the Bannerghatta National Park boundary. Forest department officials confirmed that the project is coming up on private land and does not involve diversion of forest land or impact on forests. This IIM Bangalore second campus project does not violate any existing rules regarding the Bannerghatta National Park Eco-Sensitive Zone, addressing concerns raised by environmental committees.

Since the project involves a built-up area exceeding 20,000 square meters, it will now be placed before the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) for final clearance. The NBWL approval is a mandatory requirement for projects of this scale in proximity to protected areas. Officials have imposed certain conditions on the project including maintaining campus design standards and environmental safeguards. The timeline for NBWL approval and subsequent construction commencement will depend on the board's review process.
The new campus at Manthralingapura represents IIMB's second major campus development in the Anekal area. The state government had previously leased 110 acres for IIMB's second campus at the same location, which will serve as a hub for future academic and research activities. The 42-acre phase I project is part of a larger infrastructure expansion strategy to accommodate growing student enrollment and enhance academic facilities. The campus development aligns with IIMB's vision to provide world-class infrastructure for management education.
The approval comes at a time when the Supreme Court is considering a report by the Central Empowered Committee regarding the Bannerghatta National Park Eco-Sensitive Zone. The committee had raised concerns about arbitrary decisions affecting the protected area. However, IIMB's project has been cleared as it does not involve forest land diversion and maintains appropriate distance from the park boundary. The project demonstrates how institutional development can proceed while respecting environmental regulations and wildlife protection norms.
IIMB will now proceed with the NBWL approval process and finalize project timelines for construction commencement. The institute will coordinate with environmental authorities to ensure all conditions are met during implementation. Students and stakeholders can expect enhanced facilities and expanded campus infrastructure once the project receives final clearance and construction begins. The development will strengthen IIMB's position as a premier management institution with state-of-the-art infrastructure.
