Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 second board examinations will commence on May 15, 2026. A total of 1,752 students from government schools in Union Territory have registered for the optional second attempt.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 second board examinations will begin on May 15, 2026, marking a first-time reform allowing students to retain their best score across two attempts. According to data from the Union Territory education department, 1,752 students from government schools have registered for the second board examination. The second board is an optional attempt for students who wish to improve their scores or those who failed in the first attempt. The examination will run from May 15 to 21, 2026, with Mathematics (both Standard and Basic variants) scheduled as the opening paper.
The second board examination represents a significant policy reform introduced by CBSE this academic cycle to provide students with flexibility and reduce academic stress. Students who appeared for Mathematics Standard in the main examination can opt for Mathematics Basic in this attempt, and vice versa. This flexibility has assumed added significance after teachers and students alleged that this year's Basic paper was trickier, lengthier, and more application-heavy than Standard, defeating the purpose of the easier variant. The dual-level Mathematics scheme was introduced by CBSE in 2019 to reduce academic stress and offer flexibility to students.

Eligibility and Registration Details
The second board examination is open to all students who wish to improve their scores, not just those who failed in the first attempt. Passed students may appear in up to three subjects from Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages. Students in the compartment category are also eligible to appear for the second board examination. However, students in the Essential Repeat (ER) category are not eligible for the second board attempt.
Students whose names were not submitted in the first phase of the List of Candidates could still register for the second board examination. Those already enrolled had the option to withdraw from the examination if they chose not to appear. CBSE has clarified that if a student registers and pays the fee but does not appear for the examination, their main examination result stands as final. The second board examination will be held on the same syllabus as the main examination conducted in February-March 2026.

The examination follows the same pattern and syllabus as the main examination, ensuring consistency in evaluation standards.
Strong Performance in Main Examination
The registration for the second board examination comes against the backdrop of strong overall performance by Union Territory government schools in the main CBSE Class 10 results. The overall pass percentage rose to 88.25% in 2025-26, up significantly from 81.18% in the previous year. This improvement reflects the quality of education and student preparation in government schools across the Union Territory. The strong performance in the main examination indicates that most students have already achieved satisfactory results.
The second board examination provides an opportunity for students to further improve their scores and secure better grades for higher education admissions. Students who are satisfied with their main examination results can choose not to appear, while those seeking improvement can utilize this opportunity. The flexible approach adopted by CBSE through the second board examination system demonstrates the board's commitment to reducing academic pressure while maintaining educational standards.
