Being a faculty of the civil engineering department, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

My role and responsibilities are to teach the students in the best way possible. I am actively involved in curriculum development, advising and mentoring the students on the areas that they need to work on to achieve their targets. I am involved in research work as well to hone my skills and gain additional knowledge in my field. I also overlook the assessment and evaluation of the students to help move them forward in their lives.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

I try to have a healthy relationship with the students and the team members by having open and honest conversations with them. I make it a point to listen to their concerns and solve them like it’s my own problem. This strengthens the bond with the faculties. With my students, I try being friendly with them to be more involved with them so that they are encouraged to share their life problems and I can ask them their doubts pertaining to their subject.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry-oriented?

We try to bring a practical approach to our studies by arranging industry visits on a scheduled basis. We do this in order to help them identify the key areas in a field as well as learn about the skills they need to survive in the field. They visit construction sites to gain practical exposure to learn more about their field.

How do you help your student to cope with the competition being so high in outside word?

Helping students cope with the high level of competition in the outside world is an important aspect of being an effective faculty member. I have adopted some strategies I use to support my students in this regard. I encourage students to set realistic and achievable academic and career goals. Discussing the challenges is important for understanding that success often involves persistence and adaptation. We offer guidance on different career paths and options within civil engineering, along with the skills and qualifications required for different roles in the field. We even offer mentorships to interested students. We also share our experiences and insights to help students navigate their academic and professional journeys. The college also promotes the importance of continuous teamwork and professional development.

Do you have any extracurricular activities /programs to enhance the skills of students or expose them to real word challenges?

As a faculty member in a civil engineering department, you can play a crucial role in organising and supporting extracurricular activities and programs. Our goal is to enhance students' skills and expose them to real-world challenges. Some common extracurricular activities and programs that we organise for our civil engineering students are student chapters, organizations and engineering competitions. We also organise internships and co-op programs, workshops and training, and career development workshops for the students.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

The advice I want to give to the students is to be positive. Have faith in yourself and in your skills that you will be able to overcome your challenges. Dream big and work hard for it and soon you will be able to achieve it.
