KCET 2026 (Karnataka Common Entrance Test) is conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for admission to B.E./B.Tech, B.Pharma, B.Sc. Agriculture, Nursing, Veterinary Science, and other undergraduate professional courses in Karnataka’s government, aided, and private colleges. The exam was held on April 23 and 24, 2026, across 745 exam centres, with 3,09,014 candidates appearing and 2,92,782 receiving valid ranks. As of July 7, 2026, KCET 2026 is in the Round 1 counselling phase — KEA released the mock seat allotment on July 6, 2026, and the option modification window is currently open until July 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM.

  • Option Modification Window: The KCET 2026 Round 1 option modification window is active until July 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM. If you have reviewed your mock allotment and want to rearrange, add, or remove college and course preferences, log in to cetonline.karnataka.gov.in and save your updated choices before this deadline — it is your last opportunity before Round 1 final allotment on July 15.
  • Round 1 Provisional Allotment: KEA will release the KCET 2026 Round 1 provisional seat allotment on July 14, 2026 after 10:00 AM. This will show the college and course allotted based on your final option list and rank. In 2025, the Round 1 provisional allotment was released on July 26.
  • Round 1 Final Allotment: The Round 1 final seat allotment will be published on July 15, 2026 after 11:00 AM. Allotted candidates must pay the seat acceptance fee and report to the college within the deadline — failure to report leads to automatic cancellation of the allotment.
  • Round 2 Counselling: KCET 2026 Round 2 is expected in August–September 2026. Candidates who did not get a seat in Round 1 or want to upgrade to a better college can participate with fresh option entry. In 2025, Round 2 allotment was released in August.

What is KCET 2026?

KCET stands for Karnataka Common Entrance Test, officially called UGCET (Undergraduate Common Entrance Test). It is a state-level entrance exam conducted every year by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), a government body under the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Karnataka. KCET is among India’s largest state entrance exams, with more than 3 lakh candidates appearing each cycle.

KCET 2026 is the gateway for admission to undergraduate professional programmes in government, government-aided, and private unaided colleges in Karnataka under the KCET quota. The exam covers the following courses:

  • B.E. / B.Tech (Engineering): Over 1,59,151 KCET-quota seats across 227+ engineering colleges in Karnataka
  • B.Pharma (Pharmacy)
  • B.Sc. Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, and Forestry — under UAS and UAHS universities
  • B.Sc. Nursing
  • B.V.Sc. & A.H. (Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry)
  • Pharm.D
  • B.Sc. Yoga and Naturopathy

Government and government-aided colleges like RVCE, BMSCE, and MSRIT allocate 100% of their KCET quota seats through KEA’s centralised allotment — making KCET the only route to these institutions at government-regulated fee rates.

KCET 2026 Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

The KCET 2026 exam pattern is fixed and consistent with previous years. There are 4 separate papers: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. Engineering candidates appear for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Medical, Pharmacy, and Agriculture candidates appear for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. You can also attempt all 4 papers to keep both stream options open.

Paper-wise Exam Pattern

Subject Exam Day and Session Questions Marks Duration
Biology (Botany + Zoology) Day 1 — April 23, 2026 (10:30 AM – 11:50 AM) 60 MCQs 60 80 minutes
Mathematics Day 1 — April 23, 2026 (2:30 PM – 3:50 PM) 60 MCQs 60 80 minutes
Physics Day 2 — April 24, 2026 (10:30 AM – 11:50 AM) 60 MCQs 60 80 minutes
Chemistry Day 2 — April 24, 2026 (2:30 PM – 3:50 PM) 60 MCQs 60 80 minutes
Kannada Language Test (Horanadu/Gadinadu only) April 22, 2026 50 MCQs 50 60 minutes

Marking Scheme

  • Question type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) — one correct answer out of four options
  • Marks per correct answer: 1 mark
  • Negative marking: None — wrong answers get 0 marks
  • Total marks for Engineering stream: 180 (Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics)
  • Total marks for Medical / Agri / Pharma streams: 180 (Physics + Chemistry + Biology)
  • Question paper language: Bilingual — available in both English and Kannada medium

Since there is no negative marking, you should attempt all 60 questions in every paper. Leaving a question blank and guessing both earn 0 marks for wrong answers — but every attempt gives you a 25% chance of scoring 1 mark.

KCET Rank Calculation Formula

KCET rank is not based solely on your CET score. KEA uses this 50:50 formula:

  • 50% weightage from your KCET score (Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics for Engineering; Physics + Chemistry + Biology for Pharmacy/Agriculture/Nursing)
  • 50% weightage from your 2nd PUC / Class 12 board marks in the corresponding subjects

Both scores are normalised and combined to generate the final rank. A candidate with 140/180 in KCET and 95% board marks can rank higher than someone with 150/180 in KCET and 75% board marks.

KCET 2026 Syllabus

The KCET 2026 syllabus covers the entire Karnataka 1st and 2nd PUC (Pre-University Course) curriculum. Questions are drawn from topics across both years. You do not need to study beyond your Karnataka PUC textbooks — NCERT books are a useful supplement because the Karnataka PUC and NCERT curricula closely overlap.

Physics — High-Weightage Topics

  • 1st PUC: Laws of Motion and Work-Energy, Gravitation, Mechanical Properties of Solids and Fluids, Thermal Properties and Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, Oscillations, Waves
  • 2nd PUC: Electric Charges and Fields, Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance, Current Electricity, Moving Charges and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction, Alternating Current (consistently 4–5 questions), Electromagnetic Waves, Ray Optics, Wave Optics, Dual Nature of Radiation, Atoms, Nuclei, Semiconductor Electronics

KCET 2026 Counselling Process

KCET 2026 counselling is conducted by KEA through a fully online centralised seat allotment system. You do not need to visit any KEA office — the entire process from document upload to seat allotment happens on the portal. Round 1 counselling is currently underway as of July 7, 2026.

Step-by-Step KCET Counselling Process

  1. Counselling Registration and Document Upload: Candidates with a valid KCET rank register separately for counselling on the KEA portal, pay the counselling fee, and upload all required certificates for online document verification.
  2. Document Verification: KEA verifies uploaded documents online — 10th marks card, 2nd PUC marks card, study certificate (domicile proof), caste certificate (if applicable), Aadhaar, and photographs. Verified candidates proceed to option entry.
  3. Option Entry (Choice Filling): This is the most critical step. You enter preferred college-course combinations in priority order. You can add as many choices as you want — more choices always improve your chances. The system allots the highest-ranked option your rank makes you eligible for.
  4. Mock Seat Allotment: KEA releases a mock allotment — a trial run based on your current option list and rank. It is non-binding but helps you understand whether to revise your preferences.
  5. Option Modification: After checking the mock allotment, you can rearrange, add, or delete preferences during the modification window. This is your last chance before the actual allotment.
  6. Round 1 Seat Allotment: KEA publishes provisional and then final allotment. If you are satisfied, pay the seat acceptance fee and report to the college by the deadline.
  7. Rounds 2 and 3 / Mop-up: Vacant seats from Round 1 non-joiners are filled in subsequent rounds. Candidates who were not allotted or want to upgrade can participate with fresh option entry.

KCET 2026 Round 1 Counselling Schedule

Event Date
Counselling Registration Opens June 10, 2026
Final Seat Matrix Published June 20, 2026
Option Entry Opens June 20, 2026
Option Entry Closes June 30, 2026 (10:00 AM)
Mock Seat Allotment Released July 6, 2026 (after 11:00 AM)
Option Modification Window July 6 (2:00 PM) – July 9, 2026 (10:00 AM)
Round 1 Provisional Allotment July 14, 2026 (after 10:00 AM)
Round 1 Final Allotment July 15, 2026 (after 11:00 AM)
Round 2 Counselling August–September 2026 (tentative)
Round 3 / Mop-up Round September–October 2026 (tentative)

If you are allotted a seat in Round 1 and do not pay the acceptance fee and report to the college by the deadline, your allotment will be automatically cancelled. You may not be eligible for Round 2 — so act immediately after the July 15 final allotment.

KCET 2026 Mock Allotment: Check and Modify Your Options

KEA released the KCET 2026 Round 1 mock seat allotment on July 6, 2026 after 11:00 AM. The option modification window opened the same day at 2:00 PM and is currently active until July 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM. This is a critical window — it is your last opportunity to revise preferences before KEA runs the actual Round 1 allotment on July 14–15.

What is Mock Allotment?

Mock allotment is a simulation of the actual seat allotment. KEA uses your saved option list and rank to show which college and course you would get if allotment were run at that moment. This is not a final or binding allotment — no seat is blocked at this stage. The purpose is to help you understand where your rank stands and whether revising your preferences can improve your result.

How to Check KCET 2026 Mock Allotment

  1. Visit cetonline.karnataka.gov.in
  2. Click on "UGCET 2026 — Candidate Corner"
  3. Log in with your application number and password
  4. Click "View Mock Allotment Result"
  5. Your tentatively allotted college, course, and category will appear on screen
  6. Download the PDF for reference

How to Modify Options After Mock Allotment

  1. Log in to the KEA counselling portal
  2. Go to "Option Entry / Modification"
  3. Add new college-course combinations you want to prioritise
  4. Reorder your preferences — drag choices up or down in priority
  5. Remove any options you no longer want
  6. Save and confirm your final option list before July 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM

You can modify your option list multiple times during the window. However, only the list saved when the window closes on July 9 at 10:00 AM will be used for the actual Round 1 allotment. Always save after any change — do not close the browser without saving.

Tips for the Option Modification Window

  • If your mock allotment shows a college or branch lower on your preference list, add better options above it — the system always allots the highest preference your rank qualifies for
  • Do not delete options you are happy with — you can always add new choices above without removing the fallback
  • Check KCET 2025 closing ranks for any new colleges you want to add, to confirm your rank is competitive for them
  • Add as many combinations as possible — there is no limit on the number of options you can enter
  • If you are satisfied with your mock allotment result, you can still add higher preferences above it without any risk to your current allotment position

KCET 2026 Cutoff

KCET has two types of cutoffs. The qualifying cutoff determines whether you receive a valid rank. The admission cutoff is the closing rank at which each college and course gets filled during counselling. These are very different numbers — a qualifying mark around 50/180 in General category, versus a closing rank of ~234 for RVCE CSE in 2025.

KCET 2026 Qualifying Cutoff

Category Qualifying Marks Required
General Merit (GM) 50% aggregate in CET papers (relevant stream)
OBC (Categories 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B) 40% aggregate in CET papers
SC / ST 40% aggregate in CET papers

Expected KCET 2026 Closing Ranks — Top Engineering Colleges (CSE / CSE-AI, GM Category)

Round 1 counselling is still in progress. Official round-wise cutoffs will be published by KEA at cetonline.karnataka.gov.in from July 15 onwards. The table below uses KCET 2025 actual data as the reference.

College KCET 2025 Closing Rank (GM-CSE) Expected 2026 Closing Rank (GM-CSE)
RV College of Engineering (RVCE), Bengaluru ~234–500 ~350–600
PES University, Bengaluru ~934 ~900–1,100
BMS College of Engineering (BMSCE), Bengaluru ~800–1,500 ~1,000–1,800
MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), Bengaluru ~1,100–1,200 ~1,100–1,400

Top Colleges Accepting KCET 2026 Score

More than 252 engineering colleges in Karnataka accept KCET 2026 scores through the KEA centralised allotment. Government and aided institutions fill 100% of their seats through this process. Here is a categorised list of the best colleges for KCET candidates:

College Location Type Popular KCET Courses
RVCE (RV College of Engineering) Bengaluru Government Aided Private CSE, CSE-AI, ECE, Mechanical
BMSCE (BMS College of Engineering) Bengaluru Government Aided Private CSE, ECE, Mechanical, Civil
MSRIT (M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology) Bengaluru Government Aided Private CSE, ISE, ECE, Civil

Government and aided colleges like RVCE, BMSCE, and MSRIT charge government-regulated tuition fees for KCET-allotted seats — significantly lower than what private unaided colleges charge. NIT Surathkal and IIIT Bangalore are located in Karnataka but primarily admit students through JEE Main, not KCET. All VTU-affiliated colleges mentioned above can be accessed through KEA’s centralised process at cetonline.karnataka.gov.in.

KCET 2026 Marks vs Rank Analysis

Since KCET uses a 50:50 formula (KCET score + 2nd PUC board marks), the final rank depends on both components. The table below gives an expected marks-to-rank range for the PCM Engineering stream in KCET 2026, assuming an average 2nd PUC board score of around 88–92%. Candidates with higher board marks will rank better at the same CET score — and vice versa.

KCET Score (out of 180) Expected Rank Range (2026, General Category) Colleges Likely in Range (CSE, GM)
170–180 1–100 RVCE, MSRIT, BMSCE — top branch of choice
160–169 100–500 RVCE (most branches), BMSCE CSE, PES CSE
150–159 500–2,000 BMSCE, MSRIT, PES University (CSE)
140–149 2,000–5,000 UVCE, SJCE, MSRIT (non-CSE branches), BIT CSE
130–139 5,000–10,000 BIT, DSCE, Sir MVIT (CSE and IT)
120–129 10,000–20,000 SJCE/NIE Mysuru CSE; Bengaluru Tier 2 (non-CSE)
100–119 20,000–50,000 Good private colleges across Karnataka in multiple branches
80–99 50,000–1,00,000 Tier 2–3 private colleges; many seats still available
Below 80 1,00,000+ Seats available across Karnataka (smaller cities, non-CSE)

Note: Rank estimates are based on KCET 2025 data and adjusted for the slightly larger candidate pool in 2026. Board marks significantly affect final rank — always refer to your official KEA rank card for your confirmed KCET 2026 rank.

Preparation Tips for KCET

KCET 2026 has already been conducted. For students preparing for KCET 2027 or wanting to understand what strategies helped 2026 toppers, here are the most effective approaches based on KCET’s pattern and performance data.

1. Master Karnataka PUC Textbooks First

KCET questions come directly from the Karnataka 1st and 2nd PUC curriculum. You should read every chapter in your PUC textbooks thoroughly before using any external reference. NCERT books are a strong supplement because the two curricula closely overlap, especially in Physics and Chemistry.

2. Subject-wise Focus Areas

  • Physics: Alternating Current, Electromagnetic Induction, and Magnetism consistently carry high weightage. Practise formula-based numericals from Optics and Modern Physics. Most questions are concept-based rather than lengthy calculations.
  • Chemistry: Solutions, Surface Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry (Alcohols, Carboxylic Acids, Amines) are the highest-scoring sections year after year. Learn reaction mechanisms and IUPAC nomenclature in organic chemistry for quick gains. Inorganic chemistry (p-block, coordination compounds) rewards systematic revision.
  • Mathematics: Integration is the single most important topic — expect 6–8 questions on it alone. Probability, Coordinate Geometry, and Vectors also carry consistent weightage. Spend roughly 35–40% of your Math study time on Calculus.
  • Biology: For Pharmacy and Agriculture streams, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Biotechnology applications are most important. Many questions are NCERT-level factual recall. Diagrams and process descriptions from Physiology and Ecology chapters carry reliable marks.

3. Solve Previous Year Papers

Solving KCET question papers from the last 5–7 years is one of the most effective ways to prepare. This builds familiarity with the question style, recurring topic patterns, and difficulty level. Aim to complete at least 3–4 full mock tests (all four subjects) under timed conditions.

4. Board Exams are Equally Important

KCET uses the 50:50 formula — your 2nd PUC / Class 12 board marks carry as much weight as your KCET score. Candidates who score 90%+ in board exams and 140+ in KCET consistently land in Tier 1 colleges. Never deprioritise board preparation in favour of KCET-only study.

5. Time Management During the Exam

Each KCET paper is 80 minutes for 60 questions — about 80 seconds per question. Attempt questions you are confident about first. Return to difficult ones later. Since there is no negative marking, always attempt every question before the paper ends. Leaving any question blank when there is no penalty is a lost scoring opportunity.

KCET 2026 FAQs

Ques. What is the last date to modify options in KCET 2026 Round 1 counselling?

Ans. The KCET 2026 Round 1 option modification window closes on July 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM. Log in to the KEA portal at cetonline.karnataka.gov.in, go to Option Entry / Modification, and save your final choice list before this deadline. Only the list saved at window closure will be used for Round 1 allotment.

Ques. When will KCET 2026 Round 1 seat allotment be released?

Ans. The KCET 2026 Round 1 provisional seat allotment will be released on July 14, 2026 after 10:00 AM. The Round 1 final allotment will follow on July 15, 2026 after 11:00 AM. Both will be available at cetonline.karnataka.gov.in. Allotted candidates must pay the acceptance fee and report to the college by the joining deadline announced by KEA.

Ques. What is the KCET 2026 mock allotment and how is it different from the final allotment?

Ans. Mock allotment is a trial run released by KEA on July 6, 2026, showing which college and course your rank and current option list would get you. It is non-binding — no seat is locked at this stage. The final Round 1 allotment on July 15 is binding. Between the two, the option modification window (July 6–9) lets you revise preferences if your mock result is not satisfactory.

Ques. Is KCET 2026 rank based only on the CET exam score?

Ans. No. KCET 2026 rank is calculated using a 50:50 formula — 50% weightage to your KCET score and 50% weightage to your 2nd PUC / Class 12 board marks in the relevant subjects (PCM for Engineering; PCB for other streams). Both are equally important. A candidate with a lower CET score but much higher board marks can outrank someone with a higher CET score and lower board marks.

Ques. What is the KCET 2026 qualifying cutoff to get a valid rank?

Ans. To receive a valid KCET 2026 rank, General Merit (GM) candidates must score at least 50% marks in the CET papers for their stream. SC/ST and OBC candidates need at least 40%. In 2026, 2,92,782 out of 3,09,014 candidates who appeared received valid ranks. Note that qualifying marks only entitle you to a rank — admission in top colleges requires a much higher score.

Ques. Can non-Karnataka students apply for KCET?

Ans. No. KCET is exclusively for Karnataka domicile candidates. You must have studied for at least 7 consecutive years in Karnataka schools, or qualify as a Horanadu or Gadinadu Kannadiga and pass the Kannada Language Test. Non-Karnataka students can access KCET-affiliated colleges only under the NRI or management quota, which has separate fee structures and is not part of the KCET centralised allotment.

Ques. Is there negative marking in KCET 2026?

Ans. No. KCET 2026 has no negative marking. Each correct answer earns 1 mark; wrong answers and unanswered questions earn 0 marks. You should attempt all 60 questions in each paper. Leaving any question blank when there is no penalty is a lost opportunity — every attempt gives you a 1-in-4 chance of scoring a mark.

Ques. What is a good KCET 2026 score for top engineering colleges?

Ans. A score of 160+ out of 180 in PCM typically places you in the top 500 ranks, making you eligible for CSE in RVCE and BMSCE. A score of 140–150 puts you in the 2,000–5,000 rank range, which is enough for most branches in good Bengaluru colleges like PES University, MSRIT, and UVCE. For government colleges like SJCE Mysuru, a score of around 120+ is generally sufficient for CSE. These are estimates — your board marks also significantly affect the final rank.

Ques. How many seats are available through KCET 2026?

Ans. KCET 2026 covers more than 86,000 seats across all streams. Engineering alone accounts for over 1,59,151 KCET-quota seats across 227 colleges. Other streams include B.Pharma, B.Sc. Agriculture, Horticulture, Nursing, and Veterinary courses. Government and aided colleges fill 100% of their seats through the KEA centralised allotment at government-regulated fee rates.

Ques. What happens if I do not report to my KCET Round 1 allotted college by the deadline?

Ans. If you do not pay the seat acceptance fee and report to the allotted college by the deadline after Round 1 final allotment (expected July 15, 2026), your allotment will be automatically cancelled. Depending on KEA’s 2026 rules, you may or may not be eligible for Round 2 participation. To avoid this, either report on time or officially withdraw your seat through the portal if you choose not to accept the allotment.
