Should you pick M.Tech Software Engineering at RVCE?

This course suits students who want a software job in Bengaluru and have a strong PGCET or GATE result.

Pick it if:
You have a GATE score: KEA gives M.Tech seats to GATE students before it uses PGCET ranks, so add your GATE score to the KEA form.
You want a software job in Bengaluru: the campus is in India's biggest IT city, and 13 of 15 got jobs in 2022.
You want work experience before you finish: semester 3 has an internship and semester 4 is a full major project worth 18 credits.
You missed round 1 by a wide margin: in 2025 the General close moved from 169 in round 1 to 2,749 in round 2.
Skip it if:
You want this year's placement numbers: the department has published this course's figures only up to the Class of 2022, so ask RVCE for newer ones.
You want a hardware or core job: this course and its recruiters are about software, so a core branch fits you better.
You need the hostel fee in writing before you join: RVCE does not publish a PG hostel fee, so ask the hostel office before you pay.
You plan to take a seat elsewhere: the round 1 fee was due by 12 Oct 2026, and unpaid seats were lost.
Counsellor's advice
If round 1 gives you this seat, pay the fee and report before the last date. If your rank missed round 1, keep this course high in your round 2 choices.

FAQs on RVCE M.Tech Software Engineering

Straight answers to what students ask before they decide.

Is M.Tech Software Engineering at RVCE worth the fee?▾
Yes, for most students who get placed. The full PGCET fee is INR 2.26 Lakhs for two years, and the Class of 2022 averaged INR 12 LPA. So the fee comes back within the first working year. If a loan will pay the fee, check the EMI tile in the fee block above before you decide.
What job will I get after this course?▾
Most students get software jobs with IT and product companies that hire through the ISE department. The Class of 2022 averaged INR 12 LPA and the highest offer was INR 25 LPA. If you want a hardware or core job, choose a different branch.
Should I keep this course in my options if my rank is much worse than 185?▾
Yes, if your rank is inside the round 2 range. In 2025 the General close moved from 169 in round 1 to 2,749 in round 2. Keep this course high in your options and use the rank checker above for your own category.
Who should not take this course at RVCE?▾
Skip it if you want a hardware or research job, or if you need a written hostel fee before you join. The recruiters here are software companies, and RVCE does not publish a PG hostel fee. Ask the hostel office in writing before you pay anything.
Is this course better than M.Tech CSE at RVCE for me?▾
Pick Software Engineering if you want to build and test large software, and CSE if you want a broad computer science base. Software Engineering closed at rank 185 in round 1 of 2026, so it is a little easier to get than CSE. Read both syllabi before you fill your options.
Is a batch of 18 students good for placements?▾
Yes, a small batch helps. The course has 18 seats, and in 2022 13 of the 15 students who sat for placement got jobs. Fewer students share the same companies. Keep your project and internship strong, because companies ask about them in interviews.
Should I wait a year for a better PGCET or GATE score?▾
Only if your rank is far outside the round 2 range. In 2025 the General close reached 2,749 in round 2, so many ranks still get a seat. If you clear the range now, take the seat and do not lose a year.
Is this course good for a PhD or research later?▾
Yes, if you plan for it. Semester 4 is a major project worth 18 credits, and it can turn into a research paper. Talk to your project guide in semester 3 about a research topic, because a PhD application needs strong project work.
How do I get admission to this course?▾
Write PGCET or hold a valid GATE score, then take part in KEA counselling. KEA allots the seat on your rank and choices. You pay INR 80,110 to KEA, then report at RVCE with your confirmation slip and pay INR 32,540 there.
What is the full fee for this course?▾
The full fee for a PGCET seat is INR 2.26 Lakhs for two years. If you take the college bus, it comes to INR 2.96 Lakhs. Management quota seats cost much more, with tuition of INR 2 Lakhs a year.
Is there a hostel for M.Tech students?▾
RVCE has hostels, but it does not publish a PG hostel fee. PG women students stay at a separate hostel in Pattanagere. Ask the hostel office for the fee and the room rules before you report at the college.
Can I get a scholarship for this course?▾
Yes, if you are from Karnataka and fit a scheme. SC, ST and Category 1 students with family income below INR 2.5 Lakhs can get the tuition fee of INR 1.49 Lakhs paid back. Use the scholarship calculator above to see your amount.
