RNSIT BE Lateral (Mech) FAQs
Ques. What is the duration of BE (Mechanical Engineering) Lateral Entry at RNSIT, and which year do I join?
Ans. Lateral entry students join directly into the 2nd year (3rd semester) of the BE Mechanical Engineering programme at RNSIT. The total duration of the programme for lateral entry students is 3 years (6 semesters), as opposed to 4 years for regular students. The degree awarded at the end is the same - BE (Mechanical Engineering) from VTU, Belagavi - and is equivalent in value to the regular 4-year degree.
Ques. Is DCET the only way to get admission into BE Lateral (Mechanical Engineering) at RNSIT, or are there other options?
Ans. DCET (Diploma Common Entrance Test) conducted by KEA is the primary route for government quota lateral entry seats at RNSIT. However, students can also apply directly under the Management Quota without necessarily having a DCET rank, though having appeared for DCET is generally preferred. For management quota, students need to submit their diploma marksheets, TC, and other documents directly to the RNSIT admissions office. Non-Karnataka students are not eligible for DCET quota and must apply through management quota only.
Ques. How many lateral entry seats are available in BE Mechanical Engineering at RNSIT?
Ans. As per AICTE norms, lateral entry seats are capped at 10% of the sanctioned intake of the regular programme. Since the BE Mechanical Engineering programme at RNSIT has a sanctioned intake of 60 seats, the lateral entry intake is approximately 6 seats. These seats are distributed across government (DCET) quota and management quota. Given the limited number of seats, competition for DCET quota lateral entry seats can be significant, and students are advised to apply early for management quota as well.
Ques. What subjects will I study in the 3rd semester onwards in BE Mechanical Engineering at RNSIT (Lateral Entry)?
Ans. Since lateral entry students join from the 3rd semester, they study the core mechanical engineering subjects from that point onwards. The VTU curriculum for BE Mechanical Engineering from 3rd semester onwards includes subjects such as Engineering Mathematics, Mechanics of Materials, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Manufacturing Process, Machine Design, Heat and Mass Transfer, CAD/CAM, Industrial Engineering and Management, and elective subjects in advanced areas. Students are not required to study 1st and 2nd semester subjects, though they may need to clear a bridge course in certain foundational subjects as per VTU norms.
Ques. How are placements for Mechanical Engineering students at RNSIT?
Ans. The Mechanical Engineering department at RNSIT has a dedicated placement cell. As per the official RNSIT placement statistics for 2025, the Mechanical department recorded 22 job offers with a highest CTC of 6.6 LPA and 21 internship offers with a highest stipend of Rs. 25,000 per month. In 2024, the department recorded 98 job offers with a highest CTC of 6.5 LPA. Recruiters for mechanical engineering students typically include manufacturing, automotive, and core engineering companies. Students should note that placement numbers for mechanical engineering are lower compared to CSE branches, which is a common trend across engineering colleges.
Ques. Can a diploma holder from a state other than Karnataka apply for lateral entry at RNSIT through DCET?
Ans. No, DCET is a Karnataka state-level exam and is primarily for Karnataka domicile candidates who have completed their diploma from Karnataka-recognised institutions. Diploma holders from other states are NOT eligible for DCET quota seats. However, they can apply for management quota lateral entry seats directly at RNSIT by submitting their diploma marksheets, migration certificate, and other required documents. Non-Karnataka students applying under management quota should contact the RNSIT admissions office directly for the process and seat availability.
