NFSU M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology FAQs
Ques. Is CUET-PG mandatory for M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology admission at NFSU from 2026-27? What happened to NFAT?
Ans. Yes, from AY 2026-27 onwards, NFSU has replaced the NFAT (National Forensic Admission Test) with CUET-PG for PG programme admissions. Candidates seeking admission to M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology must now appear in CUET-PG 2026 in relevant subjects such as Biochemistry (SCQP05), Forensic Science (SCQP13), Life Science (SCQP17), Botany (SCQP07), Chemistry (SCQP08), or Environmental Sciences (SCQP11). The NFAT has been discontinued for PG admissions. Students who appeared in CUET-PG 2026 (conducted March 6-27, 2026) are eligible to apply through the NFSU admission portal by June 10, 2026.
Ques. What are the career prospects after M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology from NFSU? Do students get placed in government labs?
Ans. Graduates of M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology from NFSU are well-positioned for careers in Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs), State Forensic Science Laboratories (SFSLs), CBI, DRDO, BPR&D, and other law enforcement agencies. The programme's focus on DNA Profiling, Forensic Genomics, and Biological Evidence Analysis makes graduates directly relevant to forensic investigation roles. Additionally, graduates can pursue research positions in universities, pharmaceutical companies, and biotech firms. The FACT (Forensic Aptitude and Calibre Test) qualification, which NFSU administers, is increasingly being used as a recruitment criterion by FSLs across India. Private sector opportunities include roles in forensic consulting, wildlife crime investigation, and environmental forensics.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology students at NFSU Gandhinagar?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at NFSU Gandhinagar is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. The campus has two hostels (one for boys, one for girls) accommodating approximately 400 students across all programmes. Priority is given to first-year students and those residing more than 50 km from the campus. Allotment is strictly on merit basis. Students not getting on-campus hostel can explore the empanelled list of private hostels near the campus, which NFSU releases at the beginning of each academic year. The hostel fee (including meals) ranges from approximately Rs. 56,000 to Rs. 98,000 per semester depending on AC/Non-AC room type.
Ques. What is the difference between M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology and M.Sc. Forensic Science at NFSU? Which is better?
Ans. Both programmes are offered by the School of Forensic Science at NFSU. M.Sc. Forensic Science is a broader programme covering multiple forensic disciplines including physics, chemistry, biology, and document examination, with a larger intake of 60 seats at Gandhinagar. M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology is a specialised programme focused exclusively on biological and biotechnological aspects of forensics -- DNA profiling, forensic genomics, proteomics, wildlife forensics, and forensic microbiology -- with a smaller intake of 20 seats. If your background is in biology/biotechnology and you want to specialise in biological evidence analysis and DNA forensics, M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology is the more focused and career-specific choice. Both have the same tuition fee of Rs. 65,000 per semester.
Ques. Can students from non-biology backgrounds (e.g., Chemistry or Pharmacy) apply for M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology at NFSU?
Ans. Yes. The eligibility criteria for M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology at NFSU explicitly includes Chemistry and Pharmacy graduates, in addition to Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Forensic Sciences, Medicine, Agriculture Sciences, and Environmental Science graduates. Candidates must have at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwD) in their qualifying degree. For CUET-PG, Chemistry graduates can appear in the Chemistry (SCQP08) paper, while Pharmacy graduates can appear in the Pharmacy (SCQP23) paper. However, since the programme is heavily biology-oriented, students from Chemistry or Pharmacy backgrounds may need to put in extra effort in subjects like Forensic Microbiology, Cell Biology, and Forensic Genomics.
Ques. What is the FACT exam and is it relevant for M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology students at NFSU?
Ans. The FACT (Forensic Aptitude and Calibre Test) is a national-level benchmarking exam conducted by NFSU Delhi Campus (LNJN NICFS) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is NOT an admission test -- it is a post-graduation qualification exam for forensic science graduates. FACT 2026 is scheduled for May 30, 2026 (revised date), with online registration open from April 7 to May 10, 2026. M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology graduates can appear in FACT under the Forensic Chemical Sciences elective (Chemistry subject at graduate level required). FACT qualification is increasingly being used as a recruitment criterion by Central and State FSLs for scientific staff positions. Qualifying FACT significantly enhances employment prospects in government forensic laboratories.
