An old yet new IIT

The first year is common for all. All the students irrespective of their branches are taught the same. It is not a good thing as mechanics, chemistry and environmental studies won't help me now in my computer science course or anywhere else in the future. But this has changed for the next batch as the students will now be taught the courses they choosing right from the beginning of the first year which is a good change. In the teaching methods some faculties just explain the theory and stuff and don't really care about the practical application which should be more focused as now we are in college and within 4 years we have to face the real world problems. In each semester there are mid semester exams and end semester exams. Prior to both these quizzes are conducted a week before the exams. The quizzes and mid term exams are easy while the end semester exam are on the tougher side but it is not fixed sometimes easy paper can come and sometimes tough but the grading is relative.

The campus placements are pretty decent. On campus many companies come and recruit. Almost 70-80 percent students were placed in last year even though there was recession in the market. Total 909 offers were made by the 204 companies that visited the campus. The highest package was 59 lakhs. Major companies such as Google, Amazon,oracle,Goldman sachs,texas instrumentation, tata steel limited and many others, total of 204 companies visited the campus. Average package was 16.45 for the year 2024 and 16.98 for 2023. After getting the degree I will sit for placements and will try to get placed in a good company. After 5 semesters you can do interns and you may get pre placement offers at that time to. In 7 and 8 semester you can sit for placements but most companies come after the 7th semester before the beginning of 8th semester in the month of December.

Two types of scholarships are available tuition fee waiver and merit fee waiver which are available for students who have there family income less than 1 lakh 2 lakh 4 lakh and accordingly they are given scholarships. If your family income crosses a certain level which is 4 lakh you are not given any type of scholarship. The complete cost of education for 4 years is roughly 11 lakhs including all your tuition fee and hostel fee which you don't get any scholarship. For financial aid, loans are readily given at bare minimum interest for the students. Since it is a reputed institute there is no problem in getting loan. As I just passed 1st year I don't came across any job role but responsibilities are given to students for organising fests and events and rewards are awarded. Stipends are awarded to phd students and mtech students. It becomes an issue if your family income if 6 lakhs because you won't get any scholarship and have to pay the whole fees which is almost 3 lakhs per year.

Srijan is annual cultural fest and concetto is annual technical fest. Srijan is held in February and concetto in the month of October. The Library of iit ism Dhanbad is 2nd largest technical library in Asia. Almost all the books on all the topics are available in the library. The professors teach on white board and sometimes take help of projectors to display ppts. Projector are installed in each classroom. All the sports facilities are available. Even squash and swimming pool are there in the campus along with basketball lawn tennis table tennis chess etc. when you enter the college after one month the clubs start recruiting and the recruitment for all the clubs happens in the first few months of college joining. After that clubs don't recruit. Clubs include roboism cyberlabs fintech mechismu etc in the tech field and all the dancing singing art photography clubs are there. It is on you if you want to enjoy your college life do join these clubs otherwise you will be bored just like me

Each room is alloted for 2 students. 2 beds 2 chairs 2 table and 2 almirah are provided in each room. You can get your own cooler if you want. For 10 students a single bathroom is alloted. The meal quality is very poor and not at all worth it for the fees that they are taking. The biggest con is the food they provide is extremely poor and needs improvement. Hostels are alloted as per the year it is ofnyour course. Girls and boys have separate hostels and are not allowed to enter each other's hostels. PG is not allowed every student must take the hostel which is offered by the college only. It is affordable but the meal they provide is not good.

You have to clear jee advance to get an iit. For computer science course the cutoff rank was 3258 for year 2023. You get the seat after josaa counseling which allots the seats of all iits and nits and several other colleges. Once you get the seat from the josaa counseling. You will get mail from the institute itself which will be a congratulatory message regarding the seat. You can find the application form at the college website but it is attached in the mail also so you can find it there also. You will be asked to present several documents including medical, josaa appointment letter and many others documents the list will be provided to you on your mail only. The dates you can access on the institute website. No reservation benefit for me general category. Jee advanced is conducted once a year and it is a tough exam which requires a good amount of preparation time atleast 2 years. The admission process was smooth if all the deadlines and dates are taken care of.

The faculties are well experienced and almost all the professors have done there phds from renowned institutions spread all over the world. In the first year for a class of 130 students a single professor used to teach a single subject in theory but for lab classes for 7-8 students there was one faculty available to clear the doubts. We can approach the professors after the class was over as there was 15 minutes break between each class. Apart from that we could also approach them through the emails they provided in the first class. We can also approach the professor's chamber in the time period they provide. So the approachability to faculties is pretty good. In the theory class for 130 students, it is difficult to raise questions while in the lecture itself but after the lecture we can easily get answers to our queries.
