NIFT Kolkata, B.Des, Fashion Design

Reviewed on Jul 29, 2020

Remarks

The best institute for Fashion Design, with a number of alumni working well in the fashion and design industry. Design colleges can be expensive but NIFT is almost half of their fees and thrice of their ability.

Course Curriculum Overview

The course is pretty well built but the faculties can be lazy and ignorant sometimes, they don’t communicate enough and do not give design insights but aesthetic insights and that’s not what design is about

Class Size: 39Course Fees: INR 290000 per year

Placement Experience

3.5

It depends on the individuals plan. Some people wish to start their own business and some don’t. Half of the people depend on placements and do get where they want to be while for some it’s a starting step

College Events

The campus is pretty happening, there is proper infrastructure for sports and cultural activities including a gym too. People usually indulge in these activities soon after their class ends and very less people don’t

Campus Life

NIFT Kolkata is spacious, well structured and has a lot of greenery to add to its look and feel. The labs are well equipped and the classrooms are air conditioned. There are enough computers for all the kids in one class

Hostel Facilities

The hostel is nice but not all hostel rooms have AC, and the AC room has 4 sharing which can get really messy at Times but other than that the mess and washrooms are all pretty good and it’s well ventilated

Hostel Fee: INR 90000 per year

Fixed timetable Classes, regular assessment and class test
The professors are very qualified and their teaching style is excellent.
A lot of books are available in the main library as well as in the department library

Course Curriculum Overview:

The syllabus and curriculum of Calcutta University is aligned with other entrance examination (eg.IIT JAM, JEST, TIFR, GATE etc.) Specially for the Physics BSc course. And the syllabus is updated Artificial intelligence bacis, Python Advance level is in syllabus, it's completed in college. Point to be Noted - The time given to prepare for the exam is sometimes ample but sometimes it is very less. So we have to prepare syllabus in time which is little bit frustrating.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I always wanted to take up Journalism as a career and the thing which caught my attention in this college is that they have a fully equipted studio room and other colleges may have one but the students even publish there own news report here it prepars us very well for the real world

Likes

Supportive Faculty - The professors are highly qualified, approachable and always willing to help students
Free wifi support - There are free wifi support for both student and faculty
Fee Structure - It is very affordable and low compared to other colleges in the region

Dislikes

Placement support is below average, and most studnets have to apply for off campus jobs independently, which is really pathetic in the era of ai where getting a job as a fresher is so difficult
There is no dedicated support or placment cell initiative to help studnets land meaningful summer internships or any kind of internships

Placement Experience:

Students become eligible for campus placements starting from the 7th semester. For placement drives, we have to visit the main campus, Techno Main Salt Lake (TMSL). Since students from other Techno India campuses and branches also participate, the competition is extremely high. In the 2025–2026 academic year, fewer companies visited. Only two companies, Dronahost and WishCare, visited our specific campus directly. The remaining drives—mostly service-based companies like TCS and EY, along with a few startups—were conducted at the main campus. The remaining drives mostly service based companies like TCS, EY etc and quite a few startups has visited to main campus. The package they offered mostly in between 3.5lpa - 6 lpa. Furthermore the selection process of those startups is quite rigorous often consisting of upto 5 rounds of interview, two technical rounds with two technical interviews, and HR round My plans after getting the degree is either pursue an MBA or preparing for govt jobs

Campus life: Hype vs Truth

Likes

The discipline is followed very strictly. Also you have access to library which is good, teachers are helpful and no ragging policy which is strictly followed and has a decent environment.
Thery conduct seminars which encourages students. Many faculty members are knowledgeable experienced in their respective subjects and helpful willing to solve doubts beyond the classroom also.
The college has decent infrastucture including classrooms, labs and library .

Dislikes

While the curriculum is decent ,it lacks sufficeint practical implementation.More hands on projects, real world application and industry exposure would improve learning significantly.
Campus life can sometimes fell limited in terms of active student interaction.Opportunites for clubs, networking and collaborative activities could be improved.
The college comes under St tHomas School so the campus is not great it is compact and has a canteen.

Placement Experience:

I heard it from seniors that before lockdown it was pretty decent but after lockdown the company visits are not that much comapred to before lockdown.Cognizent, Accenture, Mindtree, PQ360 which is a startup company of our senior alumni etc. visits.

The students of the same batch are friendly and helpful.
The teacher's are friendly and helpful. They do provide helpful recommendations for the betterment of your future.

Dislikes

The seniors are overly harsh when it comes to 1st year.
The infrastructure could be worked on. The college lacks renovation.
The hostel does require everyday cleaning and renovation as well as the campus.

Placement Experience:

I don't know much about this but I guess from the sixth semester the students are eligible for campus placements. This year a student from AEIE got a package of 11.2 lacs per annum and the average is around 4 lacs per annum.

The Framework is said to be great, with well equipped classroom and simply get to the libraries.
The offices at this college are great. In any case, these changes depending on the quality of the companies going by the college and the victory of the internship changes by the internship.
Understudies appreciate the campus life and flexibility to associate with others understudies. However, there are few impediments such as the division of floors between senior and junior. College life is nice and could be an inviting place for others

Dislikes

The college doesn't have lodging, and understudies must organize their settlement locally.
The college doesn't have a big field to play like any other big college

Placement Experience:

In Syamaprasad College placements and internships are given to the final year students. And the companies that offer placements are Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, etc. The highest package goes up to 20-24 lakhs and the average package goes to 6-8 lakhs. 70-80% of students get their placement in my college. At that time I planned to get the degree and apply to a multinational company with a high salary package with company facilities.

I chose national Institute of fashion technology over other because this is an elite institution run by government of India talking about comparison my course provides a real and an authentic degree on graduation and placemenrs too. For being admitted to this college one need to appear for an entrance exam named NIFT for b design one need to appear for general ability test and creative ability test held on same day if they could pass sone certain cut off then they will have to appear for situation test held approximately one month after the CAT and GAT then the final results are out taking marks in consideration of the three exam one is provided by common merit rank vnd then category rank but for Bftech one need to appear only for general ability test held on same day as b design and the results for thua are announced with the final result of b design...Read More

Honest Reviewing

I didn't apply for any other college as i was very much determined to get into this college as this is the best reputed government college to pursue designing. After the declaration of results we have to wait for the counselling process to occur based on rank eligibility. Then preference list is updated after which they release the allotment list where we have the option of upgrading the choice or sliding the choice or freezing the choice. Upgrading means preferring much better course and campus as per preference list. Sliding means much better course in the same campus and freezing means satisfied with the preference alloted. This goes till 4 rounds. Then comes accepting the seat and paying the fee wwhich includes admission fee and semester 1 fees....Read More

I didn't applied for any other college so yeah I didn't got any rejections. I had only given the entrance exam of NIFT and I got selected in 1st attempt only . The entrance exam is not that much tough . The entrance exam has two levels exam the first level is of CAT and GAT in which two papers will be there CAT means creative ability test in which drawing exam will be there and the other GAT General ability test in which MCQs will be there if English maths reasoning GK and current affairs. When you get selected in this exam the another level exam held which is situation test in which some random things are give to you and given a topic and you have to make a 3d model based on that . That's it this the the only two way exam...Read More

Richa sinha's Review On National Institute of Fashion Technology - [NIFT] Kolkata, Kolkata

The college is pretty good with a well-maintained campus. The course is relatively new as compared to other courses. So u have less competition and more chances of growth. NIFT provides you to explore your creative ideas in designing and provides a good mentorship to help you out with your projects and course. The admission process is pretty simple, you have to appear for all India level examination which normally has three round but in 2020 due to pandemic, there were only two rounds and the result was declared on the basis of these two rounds. The third round is a kind of spot round where you have to prepare some 3d models with explanations so that your teacher can evaluate your project properly. NIFT is going to be ranked among top colleges in the coming future as it has a wide scope. So it's better to go for NIFT courses rather than choosing other courses. The student just has to explore his creativity for a bright future in NIFT....Read More
