Funded PhD stipends abroad typically start at USD 2,000-3,500/month, so don't let people dismiss this path as "no money."
For those who want industry directly:
- Data science and analytics — IISER's strong math/stats background is a direct fit. Companies like Google, Amazon, and Goldman Sachs actively recruit.
- Pharma and biotech R&D — Biological Sciences IISERs (Pune, Kolkata) see good recruitment from Dr. Reddy's, Cipla, and biotech startups.
- Finance/quant roles — IISERs with strong Math departments place students at Two Sigma, DE Shaw, and similar firms.
- Teaching and academia — INSPIRE-DST fellowship (?80K/month during PhD, then a faculty position pathway) is a direct route post-IISER.
The one thing everyone misses: IISER grads who stay in India and skip PhD sometimes feel placement support is weaker compared to IITs. - Own Business/ Research Lab: If you want to be an entrepreneur, starting your own business or research lab can be the best option. It might take time to establish, but it will be something of your own.
