UIE BE {Lateral} (Mechanical Engineering) FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between BE (Lateral Entry) and regular BE in Mechanical Engineering at Chandigarh University?
Ans. The BE (Lateral Entry) programme allows diploma holders to directly join the 2nd year of the B.E. Mechanical Engineering programme, completing the degree in 3 years instead of 4. The curriculum from 2nd year onwards is the same as the regular B.E. programme. The total fees for lateral entry (Rs. 7,25,000 for 3 years) are lower than the regular B.E. (which would be approximately Rs. 9,67,000 for 4 years at the same semester fee). This route is ideal for diploma holders who want to upgrade their qualification without spending an extra year.
Ques. Which diploma branches are eligible for BE (Lateral Entry) Mechanical Engineering at Chandigarh University?
Ans. Candidates with a 3-year diploma in any branch of Engineering/Technology with at least 50% marks are eligible. This includes diplomas in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, Tool and Die Making, and other allied engineering branches. Additionally, B.Sc. graduates with Mathematics as a compulsory subject in 10+2 and at least 50% marks in B.Sc. are also eligible. Candidates are advised to confirm their specific diploma branch eligibility with the admissions office before applying.
Ques. Is CUCET mandatory for BE (Lateral Entry) Mechanical Engineering admission at CU, and how is the scholarship determined?
Ans. Yes, CUCET is the primary admission and scholarship test for BE Lateral Entry at CU. The scholarship is determined based on the CUCET score: a score of 90.01-100 gives 100% scholarship on the semester fee, while lower scores give proportionally lower scholarships. Additionally, a merit-based scholarship based on diploma marks is also available (50% scholarship for 90%+ in diploma, 20% for 85-89.99%, and 10% for 80-84.99%). Candidates can avail either the CUCET scholarship or the diploma merit scholarship, whichever is applicable.
Ques. What are the specialisations available in BE (Lateral Entry) Mechanical Engineering at UIE, CU?
Ans. The programme offers three specialisations: Thermal and Energy (focused on IC engines, compressors, refrigeration, and energy systems), Design Engineering (focused on CAD, product design, and manufacturing processes), and Design Manufacturing (focused on optimising product design for manufacturing and assembly). Students can choose their specialisation based on their career interests. The department also has dedicated labs for each specialisation area, including Applied Thermodynamics Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Heat Transfer Lab, and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Lab.
Ques. What are the placement prospects for BE (Lateral Entry) Mechanical Engineering graduates from Chandigarh University?
Ans. Mechanical Engineering graduates from CU are recruited by top companies including Honda, TATA, Maruti Suzuki, Swaraj Mazda, Ashok Leyland, and Larsen and Toubro (L&T). The overall engineering placement record at CU shows highest packages of 61.9 LPA (across all engineering branches). Mechanical engineering-specific placement data is not separately disclosed, but the department has a strong track record of placements in the automotive, manufacturing, and energy sectors. Lateral entry graduates receive the same degree as regular B.E. graduates and are treated equally by recruiters.
Ques. Can a lateral entry student at CU apply for higher studies (M.E./M.Tech or GATE) after completing BE (Lateral Entry) Mechanical Engineering?
Ans. Yes, absolutely. The BE (Lateral Entry) degree from Chandigarh University is a full-fledged B.E. degree recognised by UGC and AICTE, and is equivalent to the regular 4-year B.E. degree. Graduates can appear for GATE, pursue M.E./M.Tech at CU or any other university, or apply for PSU jobs that require a B.E./B.Tech degree. The ABET accreditation of the programme further enhances its recognition for international higher studies. There is no distinction between lateral entry and regular B.E. graduates in terms of eligibility for higher studies or competitive examinations.
