UIE BE {Lateral} (Automobile Engineering) FAQs
Ques. Can I apply for BE Lateral Automobile Engineering at CU if my diploma is in a different branch (e.g., Mechanical or Electrical)?
Ans. Yes, Chandigarh University accepts lateral entry applications from diploma holders in any branch of Engineering/Technology with at least 50% marks. However, if there are deficient prerequisite subjects compared to the Automobile Engineering first-year curriculum, you will be required to complete bridge courses as specified by the university's equivalence committee. This is a common scenario for students from Mechanical or Electrical backgrounds, and the bridge courses are typically manageable alongside regular coursework.
Ques. Is CUCET mandatory for lateral entry admission, or can I get admission without it?
Ans. CUCET is the primary admission and scholarship test for Chandigarh University. For Engineering lateral entry programs specifically, appearing in CUCET is mandatory. However, the exam is conducted on a rolling basis (you can choose your own date), making it very flexible. If you do not appear for CUCET, you will not be eligible for the merit-based scholarship, which can be significant - up to 100% of the semester fee for top scorers.
Ques. What is the actual fee I will pay after CUCET scholarship? Is the Rs. 6.50 Lakh figure the final amount?
Ans. The Rs. 6.50 Lakh is the total fee without any scholarship. If you score well in CUCET, the fee reduces significantly. For example, scoring 80-90% in CUCET gives you a 50% scholarship on each semester fee, bringing the total tuition down to approximately Rs. 3.24 Lakhs for the entire 3-year program. Scoring 90%+ makes the tuition effectively free (100% scholarship). The caution deposit of Rs. 2,000 is refundable at the end of the program.
Ques. What kind of placements can I expect from the Automobile Engineering lateral entry program at CU?
Ans. The Automobile Engineering department at CU has a strong placement record with recruiters including Honda Cars India, SML ISUZU, Royal Enfield, Bajaj, Hyundai, MG Motors, Sonalika, Tafe, and many more. While the highest packages mentioned on the website are for the overall engineering department, the department specifically mentions placements in leading automotive companies. Lateral entry students graduate with the same degree as regular BE students and are eligible for the same placement drives.
Ques. How is the 3-year lateral entry program structured compared to the regular 4-year BE?
Ans. The lateral entry program starts directly from the 3rd semester (2nd year), skipping the first two semesters of the regular program. The curriculum covers all core Automobile Engineering subjects from 3rd to 8th semester, including vehicle dynamics, automotive electronics, EV technology, manufacturing processes, and a final-year project. Bridge courses may be assigned in the first semester to cover any prerequisite gaps from the diploma curriculum.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for lateral entry students at CU? What are the practical living costs?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at CU is available but not guaranteed - it is subject to availability and must be applied for separately. CU has 16,000+ rooms across its campus with options ranging from 5-seater non-AC (Rs. 1,20,000/year) to 1-seater AC (Rs. 2,20,000/year), all inclusive of meals. Most students opt for the 3 or 4-seater non-AC options (Rs. 1,35,000-1,50,000/year) as a practical balance of cost and comfort. It is advisable to apply for hostel accommodation early as rooms fill up quickly for the July/August batch start.
