UIE BE IoT FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the BE (Hons.) IoT program at CU and a regular BE CSE program? Is the IBM collaboration actually useful?
Ans. The BE (Hons.) IoT program is specifically designed around Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence, with a curriculum co-developed with IBM. Unlike a general CSE program, this course focuses on IoT architecture, embedded systems, smart connectivity, and AI-driven applications. The IBM collaboration means students get access to IBM Software Lab for Emerging Technologies on campus, IBM-certified content delivery, and exposure to IBM tools and platforms. However, students should note that the IBM collaboration primarily enhances the curriculum and lab infrastructure; actual IBM job placements are not guaranteed and depend on individual performance in campus drives.
Ques. Is the CUCET exam difficult? Can a student with average JEE preparation clear it and get a scholarship?
Ans. CUCET is Chandigarh University's own entrance-cum-scholarship test and is generally considered easier than JEE Main. It is a computer-based test covering Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at the 10+2 level. Students who have prepared for JEE Main typically find CUCET manageable. Scoring above 70 in CUCET Phase 1 (before April 30, 2026) can fetch a 40% scholarship on the semester fee, which translates to a saving of Rs. 66,600 per semester. Students are advised to appear in Phase 1 for maximum scholarship benefits.
Ques. What are the actual placement prospects for IoT graduates from CU? Do companies specifically hire for IoT roles?
Ans. IoT as a standalone specialization is still emerging in campus placements. Most recruiters at CU hire CSE/IT graduates broadly, and IoT graduates are eligible for the same pool of software and tech roles. Companies like TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, IBM, HCL, and Infosys regularly visit the campus. Specific IoT-focused roles (IoT Engineer, IoT Solution Architect) are typically offered by product companies and startups. Students who build strong skills in embedded systems, Python, cloud platforms (AWS IoT, Azure IoT), and AI/ML alongside their degree tend to get better IoT-specific opportunities. The overall CSE/IT placement rate at CU is strong, but IoT-specific placement data is not separately published.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation mandatory at Chandigarh University? What is the actual cost of living on campus?
Ans. Hostel accommodation is not mandatory at Chandigarh University. Students can choose to stay in the hostel or arrange their own accommodation nearby. The hostel fee ranges from Rs. 1,20,000 per year (5-seater non-AC) to Rs. 2,20,000 per year (1-seater AC), inclusive of meals. For a 4-year program, hostel costs can add Rs. 4.8 Lakhs to Rs. 8.8 Lakhs to the total cost. Students staying off-campus in nearby areas like Gharuan or Kharar can find PG accommodations at Rs. 6,000-10,000 per month. The hostel fees increase by Rs. 2,000 per year annually.
Ques. Can I switch from BE (Hons.) IoT to regular BE CSE after joining? What happens if I want to change my specialization?
Ans. Chandigarh University does have internal transfer policies, but switching between programs, especially from an Apex/IBM program to a regular program, is subject to seat availability and university approval. Students are advised to confirm the exact transfer policy with the admissions office before joining. It is generally easier to switch within the first semester. The IoT program is housed under the Apex Institute of Technology (AIT), which is a separate entity from the regular UIE, so transfers may involve additional formalities.
Ques. What is the CUCET scholarship renewal process? Will I lose my scholarship if my CGPA drops below 7.5 in one semester?
Ans. CUCET scholarships are renewable annually, not semester-wise. To retain the scholarship, students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 7.5 at the end of each academic year in their first attempt, with no E, F, or I grades in any subject. If the CGPA drops below 7.5 in a given year, the scholarship is discontinued for the following year. However, if the student recovers and meets the criteria in the subsequent year, they can reapply for the scholarship, but will only receive 50% of the originally sanctioned scholarship amount going forward. Students should plan their academics carefully to avoid losing this benefit.
