UIE BE AIML FAQs
Ques. Is the BE (Hons.) CSE AIML program at CU the same as a regular B.Tech in AI/ML, and does the IBM collaboration actually add value?
Ans. The BE (Hons.) CSE with specialization in AI and ML at Chandigarh University is a full-time, on-campus engineering degree equivalent to a B.Tech in terms of industry recognition and AICTE approval. The IBM collaboration is not just a branding exercise – it means the curriculum is co-designed with IBM, students get access to IBM Software Lab for Emerging Technologies on campus, and IBM professionals deliver certain modules. Students also get exposure to IBM tools and platforms used in real industry projects. However, the depth of IBM involvement varies by semester, and the core academic delivery is by CU faculty. Students who actively engage with the IBM lab resources and certifications tend to get the most out of this collaboration.
Ques. What is the actual placement scenario for AIML students specifically, and is the 54 LPA package relevant for most students?
Ans. The highest package of Rs. 54.75 LPA (offered by Palo Alto Networks) is for exceptional students and is not representative of the average outcome. Based on student reviews and placement data, the average package for CSE/AIML students at CU ranges between Rs. 8–10 LPA, with a significant number of students placed in the Rs. 5–8 LPA range. Around 900 companies visit the campus annually, including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, and IBM. Approximately 90% of students who opt for the placement program (TPP – Training and Placement Program) secure placements. Students who do not opt for TPP (which costs around Rs. 10,000) are not eligible to sit in placement drives, so opting for TPP is practically mandatory for placements.
Ques. How does the CUCET scholarship work in practice, and what happens if my CGPA drops below 7.5 in one semester?
Ans. The CUCET scholarship is awarded based on your performance in the CUCET entrance exam and is applied to your tuition fee every semester. If your CGPA drops below 7.5 in any semester (or you receive an E, F, or I grade in any subject), the scholarship is discontinued for that year. However, if you recover and meet the 7.5 CGPA requirement in the following year, you can reapply for the scholarship – but you will only receive 50% of your originally sanctioned scholarship amount going forward. This means consistent academic performance is critical to retaining the full scholarship benefit throughout the 4-year program.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation mandatory for outstation students, and what are the practical living costs at CU?
Ans. Hostel accommodation is not mandatory; students can choose to be day scholars if they arrange their own accommodation nearby. However, for outstation students, the on-campus hostel is the most convenient option. The most affordable hostel option is the 5-seater non-AC room at Rs. 1,20,000 per year (inclusive of mess/food charges). The hostel fee increases by Rs. 2,000 per year. In addition to hostel fees, students should budget for personal expenses, stationery, and optional certifications. Overall, the total annual cost of attendance (tuition + hostel + exam fee) for a student without scholarship in a 5-seater non-AC room works out to approximately Rs. 5,10,000 per year.
Ques. Can I get admission to this program based on my JEE Main score alone, without appearing for CUCET?
Ans. Yes. Chandigarh University allows direct admission to the BE program (including BE CSE AIML) for students who have secured an AIR of up to 50,000 in JEE Main, or who have scored 90% or above in their 10+2 examination. In such cases, appearing for CUCET is not mandatory. However, if you want to avail the CUCET-based scholarship (which can go up to 100% of tuition fee), you must appear for CUCET separately. Students admitted via JEE Main rank are eligible for the JEE Main merit-based scholarship (up to 100% for AIR up to 25,000), which is applied directly without needing CUCET.
Ques. What is the difference between the BE (Hons.) CSE AIML (IBM) program and the regular BE CSE program at CU in terms of fees and curriculum?
Ans. The BE (Hons.) CSE with AIML specialization (IBM) has a higher semester fee of Rs. 1,85,500 compared to the regular BE CSE program (approximately Rs. 1,17,250–1,20,000 per semester). The additional cost reflects the IBM industry collaboration, access to specialized AI/ML labs, IBM-certified curriculum modules, and the Hons. degree designation. The curriculum for the AIML program includes specialized subjects such as Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Human-Computer Interaction, Augmented Reality, Data Warehousing, and OLAP Models – subjects not covered in the regular CSE program. Students who are specifically targeting AI/ML roles and want industry-recognized IBM exposure will find the premium justified, while those on a tighter budget may consider the regular CSE program with electives in AI/ML.
