DACN Ph.D. Biochemistry FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Dr. Ambedkar College a full-time programme, and can working professionals apply?
Ans. The Ph.D. in Biochemistry at DACN is offered as a full-time on-campus programme. Working professionals who wish to pursue Ph.D. research may explore the part-time option if available under RTMNU norms, but they must confirm availability of a part-time research supervisor at DACN's Biochemistry department. Full-time scholars are expected to be present at the research centre regularly and must maintain the required attendance and coursework obligations as per RTMNU Direction No. 33 of 2026.
Ques. Do I need to clear the RTMNU PET exam to get admission, or is UGC-NET sufficient?
Ans. Candidates who have cleared UGC-NET/JRF or CSIR-NET/JRF are exempted from appearing in the RTMNU PET exam, as per RTMNU Direction No. 7 of 2027. However, even after PET/NET exemption, candidates must apply to the research centre, appear for the RAC interview, and be selected based on merit and supervisor availability. Simply holding a NET/JRF certificate does not guarantee admission; the final selection depends on available seats and the supervisor's discretion.
Ques. How many seats are available in the Ph.D. Biochemistry programme at DACN, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. The Department of Biochemistry at DACN has a total intake capacity of 20 seats across three supervisors. For the 2026-27 session, 6 seats were vacant (2 under Dr. U.J. Dongre and 4 under Dr. D.N. Begde). Admission is competitive as it depends on both the PET/NET score and the RAC interview. Candidates are advised to contact the department in advance to understand the research areas of available supervisors and align their research proposal accordingly.
Ques. What is the duration of the Ph.D. programme and what does the coursework involve?
Ans. The Ph.D. programme at RTMNU-affiliated centres has a minimum duration of 3 years. As per RTMNU Direction No. 33 of 2026, candidates must complete a mandatory pre-Ph.D. coursework before registering their research topic. The coursework typically covers research methodology, subject-specific advanced topics, and academic writing. Only after successful completion of coursework and its assessment can the candidate formally register the research topic and begin full-fledged thesis work.
Ques. What fellowship or financial support can a Ph.D. Biochemistry student at DACN expect?
Ans. Students who have qualified UGC-JRF or CSIR-JRF are entitled to a monthly fellowship of INR 37,000 (for the first two years) and INR 42,000 (as Senior Research Fellow thereafter), along with a contingency grant. SC/ST/Minority category students can apply for NFSC, RGNF, or MANF fellowships through the National Scholarship Portal. Students without JRF qualification do not automatically receive a stipend from the college or university; they must independently apply for available fellowship schemes.
Ques. What research areas are available in the Biochemistry department at DACN, and how do I choose a supervisor?
Ans. The Biochemistry department at DACN has three recognized research supervisors: Dr. Mrs. B.A. Mehere, Dr. U.J. Dongre, and Dr. D.N. Begde. Each supervisor has a specific research focus, and candidates are expected to approach the department to understand the ongoing research projects and available vacancies under each supervisor. It is strongly recommended to contact the department before applying, as admission is subject to supervisor availability and research area alignment. The RAC interview also evaluates the candidate's research aptitude and compatibility with the supervisor's work.
