SMVITM Ph.D FAQs

Ques. Does SMVITM provide a monthly stipend or institute-funded fellowship to Ph.D scholars?

Ans. SMVITM does not separately advertise an institute-funded monthly stipend. Full-time scholars selected through the VTU-ETR process may be eligible for the VTU Research Fellowship as per VTU norms. Scholars who already hold a UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, PMRF, or another national fellowship can continue availing it at SMVITM, as the institute accepts all major central-agency fellowships.

Ques. Can I apply for a Ph.D at SMVITM with only a B.Tech and no M.Tech?

Ans. No. VTU regulations require a postgraduate degree for Ph.D enrolment. For engineering specializations, an ME or M.Tech in the relevant discipline is mandatory. For science specializations such as Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, an MSc is required. B.Tech holders would first need to complete a postgraduate degree before applying.

Ques. How are research supervisors assigned to Ph.D scholars at SMVITM?

Ans. During the pre-registration interview, the doctoral committee at SMVITM evaluates the candidate’s research proposal and aligns it with a faculty supervisor and co-supervisor from the relevant department, as per VTU regulations. It is advisable to identify a potential supervisor and discuss your research area before attending the interview.

Ques. What is the fee structure if my Ph.D extends beyond three years at SMVITM?

Ans. The annual research fee of INR 61,200 continues to apply for each additional year beyond the minimum three-year duration. VTU permits a maximum of six years for Ph.D completion. Scholars requiring an extension beyond six years must apply separately to VTU for special consideration.

Ques. Can I apply to both rounds of VTU-ETR in the same year for SMVITM?

Ans. VTU-ETR runs in two independent rounds each year, Round 1 around February and Round 2 around August. You may apply to either round independently. An ETR score from Round 1 is not automatically carried over to Round 2, so candidates who do not proceed after Round 1 must reapply for the subsequent round.
