Reddit Insight: Indian MBA admits at D’Amore-McKim reported Dean’s Fellowship offers of around USD 30,000 (INR 28.4 lakh) up to full tuition for 2025–26. Student reports suggest that the strongest awards were typically associated with profiles featuring a 720+ GMAT score and 5+ years of work experience.

India-Specific Scholarships at Northeastern University

Northeastern University does not offer a formally named India-specific scholarship. Indian applicants typically access funding through general international merit scholarships, the Sanjay Mongia Scholarship established by Indian alumni, and departmental research assistantships.

Scholarship Value Eligibility for Indian Students Deadline
Sanjay Mongia Memorial Scholarship $5,000 to $10,000 (INR 4.7 to 9.4 Lakhs) Indian graduate students in select programs Tentative March 15, 2027
International Merit Scholarship $8,000 to $15,000 (INR 7.5 to 14.2 Lakhs) All international including Indian; merit-based Automatic with admission
Departmental Research Assistantship Full tuition and $2,500 to $3,500 monthly (INR 2.4 to 3.3 Lakhs) MS students with faculty sponsorship; competitive After first semester

Indian applicants should build the funding stack across three layers:

  • Layer one is the internal college merit award (Khoury, D’Amore-McKim, or Engineering)
  • Layer two adds the Sanjay Mongia scholarship or a research assistantship after arrival
  • Layer three brings a large external award like Inlaks or Fulbright detailed in the next section

The Sanjay Mongia award prioritises first-generation graduate students from India. Applicants submit a 500-word essay on financial need alongside proof of admission to Northeastern.

Northeastern University PhD Scholarships

Northeastern University fully funds admitted PhD students for up to five years, covering full tuition, an annual stipend of USD 30,000–42,000 (INR 28.4–39.7 lakh), health insurance, and a research or teaching assistantship.

Funding Route Total Package Value Eligibility for Indian Students Deadline
Standard PhD Funding Package Full tuition and $30,000 to $42,000 stipend (INR 28.4 to 39.7 Lakhs) All admitted PhDs across colleges Tentative December 15, 2026
Presidential Doctoral Fellowship Additional $15,000 top-up (INR 14.2 Lakhs) Top-ranked doctoral admits; nominated by department Tentative January 15, 2027
Northeastern University Graduate Fellowship Full tuition and stipend, no teaching load Exceptional first-year doctoral students Tentative December 1, 2026
GAANN Fellowship Full tuition and $34,000 stipend (INR 32.1 Lakhs) Select Khoury Cybersecurity and Engineering PhDs Tentative February 1, 2027

Indian PhD applicants typically pay little to no tuition out of pocket, with stipends helping cover Boston living costs. The Presidential Doctoral Fellowship is department-nominated, making a strong faculty advocate important alongside academic performance. Applicants should contact potential advisors before submitting the application, as advisor support can strengthen funding prospects.

External Government Scholarships for Northeastern University Applicants

Indian government and private foundation scholarships are available to Northeastern applicants at both UG and PG levels. These awards are generally applied for separately from the admission process, with many scholarship applications opening between January and April of the intake year.

Scholarship Value Eligibility for Indian Students Deadline
Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship Tuition, stipend and travel (INR 40 Lakhs+ total) Indian citizens; master’s in select fields Tentative May 15, 2027
Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship Up to $100,000 (INR 94.5 Lakhs) total Indian citizens under 30; admits at approved universities Tentative April 15, 2027
JN Tata Endowment Scholarship INR 10 Lakhs loan scholarship Indian citizens for higher studies abroad Tentative March 22, 2027
KC Mahindra Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies INR 8.5 Lakhs (interest-free loan) Indian graduate students; competitive interview Tentative March 31, 2027
Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship 50% grant and 50% loan; full need coverage Indian citizens with demonstrated financial need Tentative March 31, 2027
Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation Scholarship Interest-free loan up to INR 20 Lakhs Indian citizens; PG admits with strong profile Tentative April 20, 2027

Fulbright-Nehru and Inlaks Shivdasani are among the major external funding options for Indian students pursuing Master’s study at Northeastern. Since Inlaks requires an admission offer first, students should complete the Northeastern application early, ideally by January, and then apply for the Inlaks scholarship by April.

Reddit Insight: Indian MS Data Science and MS CS students at Khoury College report combining a USD 10,000 (INR 9.4 lakh) merit award with a JN Tata loan scholarship. According to these student reports, the combination can bring the net first-year cost to around INR 32 lakh, including Boston living expenses.

FAQs

Ques. What is the highest scholarship an Indian student can stack at Northeastern University?

Ans. An Indian UG admit combining the University Scholarship ($32,000 per year, INR 30.2 Lakhs) with an Inlaks Shivdasani grant can cover 90% of the total cost. At the graduate level, a D’Amore-McKim MBA Dean’s Fellow with a Fulbright-Nehru award can attend fully funded.

Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for Northeastern University scholarships?

Ans. For Fall 2027 intake, submit the admission application by January 15, 2027 (tentative) to be considered for automatic merit awards. External grants like Inlaks and Fulbright close between March and May 2027, so plan a two-stage timeline.

Ques. How do I apply for graduate merit awards at Northeastern University?

Ans. Graduate merit awards at Khoury College, D’Amore-McKim, and the College of Engineering are decided together with your admission review. No separate scholarship form is required for the college-level awards, though external grants like Sanjay Mongia need a dedicated essay.

Ques. What GPA or GRE score do I need for a Northeastern University merit scholarship?

Ans. Graduate merit awards at Northeastern typically require a 3.5+ GPA (8.0 CGPA equivalent) plus 320+ GRE for engineering and CS. MBA fellowships expect a 700+ GMAT, and UG University Scholarships expect a 90%+ CBSE or 38+ IB score.

Ques. Does the Northeastern University Global Scholars Award cover living costs in Boston?

Ans. The Global Scholars Award of $10,000 (INR 9.4 Lakhs) reduces tuition, not living costs. Boston housing, food, and transport add roughly $22,000 (INR 20.8 Lakhs) per year, which students cover through part-time work, co-op earnings, or external grants.

Northeastern University Scholarships: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 52 Reviews

Scholarships at Northeastern University are primarily awarded to undergraduate students, with typical amounts up to $10,000 per semester. However, these opportunities are limited for graduate students, particularly international ones, as scholarships generally target U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Some specific scholarships include a $1,000 Global Learner Award for students enrolled in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, with a few additional scholarships offering a 5% tuition fee reduction.

Exceptional academic performance, such as maintaining a grade above 95%, can lead to eligibility for scholarships in subsequent semesters. Research and teaching assistantships are available for qualified students, offering an alternative means of financial support, especially for graduate students. Additionally, a student with a GRE score above 320 may be eligible for a scholarship under the Biotech A2M Scholars Program.

Scholarship

  • The Real Story on Scholarships and Financial Aid
  • Let me be completely honest about the scholarship situation because I wish someone had explained this to me before I applied.
  • My Scholarship
    • I received the Double Husky Scholarship, which is exclusively for Northeastern alumni. Since I did my undergrad here, I automatically qualified when I enrolled in the graduate programme. The scholarship covered 25% of my tuition, which worked out to roughly $14,250 over the entire 32-credit programme. That discount honestly made a huge difference in my decision to stay at NEU rather than exploring other schools. Without it, I probably would've looked more seriously at state schools with lower tuition.
  • What My Classmates Got
    • In my cohort of around 60 students, I'd say only about 10-12 people had any meaningful financial support. Most students were paying full price, which was a reality check for a lot of us.
    • A couple of students landed Teaching Assistant positions, which came with a stipend of around $2,000-$3,000 per semester plus a partial tuition waiver covering maybe 25-50% of their credits. One guy I knew got a Research Assistant position working on a funded project, and his deal was even better—full tuition coverage plus a $15,000 annual stipend. But those positions are incredibly competitive and usually require you to have specific technical skills the professor needs.
    • Three or four international students had external funding—government scholarships from their home countries or corporate sponsorships. One woman from India had a full scholarship from her country's education ministry. Another classmate's employer back in Brazil was covering everything because they wanted him to return with advanced management training.
  • The Average Picture
    • If I had to estimate, only about 15-20% of students received any aid at all. Among those who did, the average was probably around $5,000-$10,000 total for the programme—enough to help but nowhere near covering everything. The few with RA/TA positions or full external scholarships were definitely the exception, not the rule.

  • I found it through whatsapp and Facebook groups; Monthly rent was 600 USD. this was for a shared room in a three-bedroom apartment, which is how I managed to get the cost so low in an expensive area like Fenway/Kenmore. The Boston housing market is incredibly fast-paced, especially from July to September. Good, affordable places would get dozens of enquiries within hours of being posted. I had to be constantly checking the groups and messaging people immediately. Sharing a room is the most effective way to save money. Finally, try to connect with seniors from your programme; they often have rooms opening up and can give you the most reliable leads.
  • The accommodation is a 15 minute walk from the university. A large number of Indian and other international students at Northeastern tend to live in neighbourhoods that offer a good balance of affordability and proximity to campus. The most common areas are Mission Hill, Roxbury Crossing, and parts of Jamaica Plain (near the Orange Line T station).

Scholarship

  • I haven't heard of scholarships for Master students as such.
  • But, one of my friends is really an exceptional student who got to work under a prof and they waived off her semester fee. That's like 1% of master's students.
  • And I've done TA and got paid really well.
  • TAs/RAs are paid enough. And the univ even offers co-ops and part-time jobs which are sufficient enough to live in Boston.

  • I live off campus. Most of the international students live off campus.
  • On-campus housing is quite expensive, with shared apartments around $2000 to begin with. Compared to around $400 for shared living outside.
  • Finding a house is always a challenge. I recommend joining facebook housing groups and whatsapp housing groups. These groups are always active and are always looking for people to provide accommodation.
  • My monthly rent ranged from $550 (sharing) to $1200 (private).
  • I always used to live within a 2-mile radius of the univ.
  • Some students opt for online classes and tend to live far away from the univ., so they can pay less rent.
  • Indians are everywhere and it's not a big problem. Join the groups and you're good to go!

Scholarship

  • There are no scholarships for Master's students. Therefore, I did not receive any scholarship. You could only get a scholarship if you're a bachelor's student, which is again, too expensive.
  • Nobody from my batch received any scholarship since we were all graduate students. Some people did, but they were part of a different school, so I can't really say much about them.

  • I was staying off-campus from the moment I landed in the US. There are no on-campus dorms for graduate students at Northeastern University.
  • I paid somewhere around $530-$560 at each of the places I stayed at. The heat and hot water were mostly included. You always had to pay for the electricity and WiFi.
  • I stayed around 15-20 minutes away from campus. I used to walk to campus. I stayed in the area where most Indian students stayed, the Longwood Medical Area.

Scholarship

  • Scholarships depend on the courses and also on your performance.
  • I did not receive any scholarship, as there was no scholarship given to our program masters student.
  • A definite number of scholarships could be a little difficult to give out but given WPI is a smaller school in number, they try to give out as many as they can and again, it depends on the program you choose. Undergraduates end up getting a good amount of scholarship.

  • I opted for off-campus accommodations.
  • I found it with the help of a relative and different websites like apt-finder and willow.
  • It was challenging to find an apartment because you cannot come and see what you're signing up for. You can always contact seniors and ask if they've got space in their house or if anyone has, they can tell you. WPI has an off-campus Facebook house hunt group as well.
  • I would like to recommend students definitely find a walking distance house from WPI as it gets harsh in winters. And find a house with a good heater.
  • My accommodations were a 7-10 minute walk from campus so it was pretty close. Most of the Indian students live in the same neighborhood.

Scholarship

  • No, I did not receive any scholarship.
  • None of my classmates or people from my coursework received any scholarship that I am aware of.
  • I think there is a way we can waive off subjects that we have covered in our undergrad but when it comes to scholarship the chances of getting one is very rare, in my opinion also because of the competition. I am not much aware of the average number of students receiving scholarships per year.

  • Off-campus, already has friends and their support was present.
  • Monthly rent was 800$. This included heat and water.
  • The challenge of budget friendly accommodations near university was there.
  • Join whatsapp groups, use fb marketplace and you will get the best deals.
  • Mine was a 20 mins walk about 1.5 miles from the university. Boston has Indians everywhere

Scholarship

  • No international students are offered with any scholarship. Only undergraduate students and graduate students who are US citizens get scholarship of 50%.
  • None of my friends or any seniors got any scholarships from any batch. I haven't heard anything such as scholarships for us at Northeastern University. You must be a US citizen or Permanent US resident who is eligible to vote, only they get the scholarships.

  • I found my accommodation Through an app called Yocket, from there I got links for some whatsapp groups.
  • Monthly expenses include many things as listed below (per person) - Rent, electricity bill, water bill, WiFi bill, Laundry, groceries, Transportation. Everything in total would be around 1000 US dollars. So, this expense would be there for every month.
  • It was difficult to find vegetarians and the places were very bad with rats and cockroaches. Most people never used to reply.
  • Mission Main is a very good place to stay, it is safe at night. Police and ambulance will be going around this area. It is very nearby University and also near to train station, grocery stores, and bus stand.
  • I live in Mission main and it is 10 mins walk to the university. Most of the Indian students live in an apartment called Jvue.

Scholarship

  • Yes, I received a scholarship of 1,000 dollars called the Global Learner Award. It is basically given to all the students who got an admit and have enrolled in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences.
  • The award amount was 1,000 dollars.
  • Yes, some of my batchmates received other scholarships of 5% on the total tuition fee. This is only given to students enrolled in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and who have a very good profile.
  • While I don't know the exact number of students getting scholarships each year, I can say that getting a scholarship for the Khoury College of Computer Sciences is easy, as if you have gotten into the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, that means that you are already among the top students in the university. The typical award amount is 1,000 dollars.

  • I found my accommodation via a broker named StudentLandings Inc.
  • Monthly expenses include rent and utilities (electricity, gas, and wifi bill). Rent costs around 530 dollars, and utilities cost around 70-80 dollars max per month. Facilities only include all the in-unit appliances like microwave, dishwasher, oven, Washer and dryer.
  • We didn't face any challenges while finding accommodations; as such, everything went smoothly.
  • Do look out for accommodation mainly in the Mission Hill area, as the utility bill there is free of charge and its very close to the university. Also, the neighbourhood is very safe and lively.
  • I don't have any transportation costs as there's a free bus ride on the route where my house is located. And on top of that, my house is just 1.3 km away from the university, which is pretty convenient.
  • Most Indian students stay in areas like Roxbury, Mission Hill, Fenway, and South End. These are places that are near the university.

Scholarship

  • At Northeastern University, scholarships are primarily awarded to undergraduate students, covering a wide array of courses. Each of these courses can offer scholarships of up to $10,000 per semester.
  • Typically, more than ten students per course benefit from these scholarships. This system aims to support a diverse student body, helping to alleviate the financial burden of higher education for undergraduates. Unfortunately, these scholarships don't seem to extend as frequently to graduate programs, which might be why you didn't receive one for your course.

  • The Graduate Students doesn't have On-Campus accommodation option. But, Northeastern offers off-campus house searching facilities.
  • I found my first accommodation through Northeastern Housing groups, where each day the messages are piled up with accommodations for students.
  • The monthly rent varies depending on the place. If you find a place near University, it will cost more than $1000 for private room and $700 for shared room.
  • I stayed in a shared room where I paid $625 including utilities (Water, Gas, sewage) and there will be additional utility charges (electricity and Wi-Fi).
  • I would say check in the Northeastern Housing groups for accommodation, which is the easier way, and also, check in Facebook pages for accommodations.
  • My accommodation is 0.8 miles away from University, and it is a place called Roxbury, where most of the Indian students stay, because of less monthly rent, easier bus service access.
