The University of British Columbia Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a four-year direct-entry undergraduate degree. Delivered on the Kelowna Okanagan campus, it admits international students each September through Enrolment Services. Tuition runs CAD 1,720.94 per credit for 2026-27, or roughly CAD 51,628.20 (INR 34.58 Lakhs) per full-time year.

The program prepares graduates to write the Canadian NCLEX-RN regulatory exam for registered nurse licensure. Clinical placements span Interior Health hospitals and community sites across British Columbia. It suits Indian applicants targeting long-term Canadian nursing licensure and permanent residency pathways.

  • QS World University Rankings 2027 places UBC Nursing at rank 45 globally, one of the top three in Canada.
  • The Okanagan cohort recorded a 100% NCLEX-RN pass rate in spring 2024, per the School of Nursing.
  • Graduates access Canada’s open Post-Graduation Work Permit for up to three years plus BC’s health-sector priority PR streams.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the 2026 Winter intake have now closed. Applications will open in October 2026 for the 2027 Winter intake. Nursing seats are limited, so early complete applications carry a strong advantage.

The University of British Columbia BSN Fees and Living Costs 2027

UBC bills the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at an international per-credit rate rather than a flat annual sum. A full-time Winter Session at 30 credits, plus mandatory ancillary and health-insurance charges, sets the working budget for Indian applicants.

Fee Component (2026-27) CAD INR
International tuition per credit (Nursing) CAD 1,720.94 INR 1.15 Lakhs
Full-time annual tuition (30 credits) CAD 51,628.20 INR 34.58 Lakhs
iMED health insurance (first 3 months) CAD 237.00 INR 15,875
BC MSP (per month after 3 months) CAD 79.00 INR 5,291
Estimated 4-year tuition (with 3% annual cap) CAD 215,993 INR 1.45 Crore

Source: UBC Undergraduate Tuition Fees 2026-2027 page (official).

All INR conversions in the article use a conversion rate of CAD 1 = INR 66.98 as of July 2026. Rates fluctuate daily, verify before applying.

  • Nursing per-credit tuition rose from CAD 1,704.39 in 2025-26 to CAD 1,720.94 in 2026-27, well inside the UBC cap.
  • International undergraduate tuition may rise by no more than 3% each year for four years or until graduation.
  • The iMED premium of CAD 237 covers the first three months only before students shift to BC provincial coverage at CAD 79 per month.
  • U-Pass transit (CAD 71 per term) is bundled with student fees and gives unlimited Kelowna Regional Transit access.

Cost of Living in Kelowna for BSN Students

Kelowna sits well below Vancouver on housing cost, though rents rose sharply in 2024-25 and now trail only Toronto and the Lower Mainland. The figures below draw from UBC Okanagan Housing and Kelowna rental market data.

Expense Monthly (CAD) Monthly (INR)
On-campus Cascades residence CAD 1,048 to 1,101 INR 70,175 to 73,725
Off-campus 1-BR apartment (median) CAD 1,799 INR 1.20 Lakhs
Groceries and meals CAD 400 to 500 INR 26,792 to 33,490
Utilities, personal, books CAD 250 to 400 INR 16,745 to 26,792
Transit (U-Pass bundled) CAD 71 per term INR 4,756
Monthly total (shared off-campus) CAD 1,850 to 2,200 INR 1.24 to 1.47 Lakhs

ROI reality: BSN graduates enter the BC Nurses Union grid at CAD 41.42 per hour, which recovers a full year of Nursing tuition in roughly eight months of full-time RN work in British Columbia.

The University of British Columbia BSN Admission

The University of British Columbia runs a single Winter Session intake for the BSN, opening in October. Applications flow through EducationPlannerBC on the standard UBC undergraduate cycle, not through a nursing-only portal.

Intake and Deadline

The BSN Basic Program is offered only in the September (Winter Session) start. Summer or January entry is not available for new international applicants.

Application Stage Deadline Important Notes
UBC Initial Online Application December 4, 2026 Submit the online application through UBC Admissions.
PLAR Review Application (HAP Courses) December 4, 2026 Required for applicants seeking Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) for Human Anatomy & Physiology (HAP) courses.
BSN Supplemental Application January 15, 2027 (11:59 PM PST) Complete and submit the BSN Supplemental Application before the deadline.
CASPer Assessment January 17, 2027 Last date to complete the CASPer assessment.
Interim Transcript Submission January 31, 2027 (11:59 PM PST) Must include grades up to December 2026, courses in progress for early 2027, and proof of enrolment for any remaining prerequisites and/or challenge exams.
HAP Courses & Final Official Transcript Submission May 31, 2027 (11:59 PM PST) Submit final official transcripts and proof of completed HAP courses directly from the issuing institution to UBC Undergraduate Admissions.

Important Notes

  • Late applications are not accepted.
  • Official transcripts are accepted if postmarked by the final transcript deadline.
  • All final transcripts must be official and sent directly from the issuing institution to UBC Undergraduate Admissions.
  • If a deadline falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, it will automatically be extended to the next business day.

Academic Eligibility

Nursing capacity is capped, so the published UBC minimum is not the working cut-off. Recent admitted applicants have cleared the base bar by a wide margin.

  • Minimum 70% average or GPA 2.8 on a 4.0 scale across the most recent 30 non-nursing transferable credits (approximately 60% to 65% or CGPA 6.5 to 7.0 on 10 for Indian applicants; WES sets the official equivalence).
  • Minimum 48 transferable credits completed in a non-Nursing field of study recognised by UBC.
  • Three UBC credits of first-year English composition, plus six UBC credits of human anatomy and physiology covering all body systems (BIOL_V 155 recommended).
  • CASPer situational-judgement assessment (Canadian Nursing version) required as part of the file review.

English Language Proficiency

UBC applies its central English Language Admission Standard to Nursing; the School of Nursing does not raise the bar for BSN. Every accepted test must come from a single sitting taken from 1 January 2024 onward.

Test Overall Component Minimums
IELTS Academic 6.5 No band below 6.0
TOEFL iBT (0 to 120 scale) 90 R 22, L 22, W 21, S 21
TOEFL iBT (1.0 to 6.0 scale) 4.5 R 4.5, L 5, W 4.5, S 4
Duolingo English Test 125 R 115, L 115, W 120, S 120
PTE Academic 65 60 in each section
CAEL or CAEL Online 70 Not specified

Note: TOEFL iBT moved to a 1.0 to 6.0 band scale on 21 January 2026. UBC now lists both requirements above; both scales are reported during the 2026 to 2028 transition. Verify the current requirement on the official admissions page before applying.

  • Indian applicants typically clear the IELTS 6.5 with 8 to 12 weeks of dedicated prep; the writing 6.0 sub-band trips the most files.
  • Duolingo is the cheapest and fastest route (about USD 65 and two days for scores), but the writing 120 sub-score is a hidden barrier.
  • Twelfth-standard English medium alone does not satisfy the standard; UBC requires a test unless an approved English-medium degree is already in hand.
Tip for Indian students: The 48-credit prerequisite makes UBC BSN a transfer-only pathway for international applicants, so an Indian B.Sc. or first-year Nursing at a Canadian public college is the fastest bridge to a Year 2 seat.

The University of British Columbia BSN Application

The BSN application is one file with staged evidence, not a rolling submission. Indian applicants who miss the December award-consideration date can still apply until 15 January without losing an admission seat.

Documents Every Indian Applicant Must Submit

Nursing files carry a heavier compliance load than a standard UBC application. Missing a single clearance can delay the September start by a full year.

  • Official academic transcripts from every post-secondary institution, sent electronically or by post to UBC Enrolment Services.
  • English test score from a single sitting (IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, PTE, CAEL, or Cambridge) submitted directly by the testing agency.
  • CASPer situational-judgement assessment (Canadian Nursing version) booked and completed before the file review.
  • Criminal Record Check clearance for work with vulnerable populations, applied for after admission through the BC Ministry of Public Safety.
  • CPR-HCP certification within six months of the program start and current First Aid within two years.
  • IRCC-mandated upfront medical exam so the co-op work permit for clinical placement is issued on time.

Positioning Your Statement and Prerequisites

The 48-credit rule effectively makes UBC BSN a transfer pathway; a completed B.Sc. or one to two years at an accredited Indian or Canadian institution is standard. Prerequisites should be graded 70% or better, with human anatomy and physiology taught with both lab and lecture components.

Also Check: Canada Student Visa Guide for Indian Students

Application tip: Sit CASPer at least six weeks before the 15 January deadline, since the Canadian Nursing version releases scores in about three weeks and UBC will not review an incomplete file.

The University of British Columbia BSN Scholarships

UBC excludes the Bachelor of Nursing from its International Scholars Program tier, which cuts BSN candidates off from the largest full-tuition awards. Automatic entrance scholarships and campus-only awards still apply and can offset roughly one to two Lakhs INR of first-year cost.

Entrance Awards Indian BSN Applicants Can Claim

All four awards below are considered automatically for anyone who applies to UBC Okanagan on time; none requires a separate essay or additional submission.

Scholarship Amount (CAD) Amount (INR) Key Eligibility
International Major Entrance Scholarship CAD 10,000 to 25,000 per year INR 6.70 to 16.75 Lakhs New from secondary school; strong academics and activities
Outstanding International Student Award CAD 10,000 to 25,000 (one time) INR 6.70 to 16.75 Lakhs Merit based; automatic at admission offer
UBC Global Elevation Award CAD 8,000 (CAD 4,000 per term) INR 5.36 Lakhs All new international undergraduates on the Okanagan campus
UBC International Welcome Award CAD 5,000 (Year 1 only) INR 3.35 Lakhs UBC Okanagan listed as first choice; 24-credit enrolment
  • Presidential Scholars Award consideration closes on 4 December, six weeks earlier than the standard 15 January admission deadline.
  • The IMES weighting increasingly favours community leadership and non-academic profile, not test scores alone.
  • External Canadian nursing bursaries (RNFBC, Registered Nurses Foundation of BC) are BC-residency gated and do not open until Year 3 of the BSN.

Read More: UBC Scholarships for Indian Students

Scholarship reality: No single UBC award covers full BSN tuition for an Indian international; a stacked package of IMES plus Global Elevation typically nets CAD 18,000 to 33,000 (INR 12 to 22 Lakhs) for Year 1 only.

The University of British Columbia BSN Salary

British Columbia is a unionised nursing market with published wage grids, so early-career pay is predictable rather than employer-negotiated. UBC BSN graduates enter the BC Nurses Union grid immediately after passing the NCLEX-RN licensure exam.

Entry Salary and Progression

The figures below are indicative gross pay before Canadian federal and BC provincial tax. Take-home varies with overtime, weekend differentials, and dependant claims; use a Canadian salary calculator to convert to net.

Role and Stage Annual Gross (CAD) Annual Gross (INR)
Entry RN (BCNU Step 1, first year) CAD 80,769 INR 54.10 Lakhs
Registered Nurse average, British Columbia CAD 77,976 INR 52.23 Lakhs
BSN Nurse average, British Columbia CAD 87,304 INR 58.47 Lakhs
BCNU Step 9 top grid (10 years plus) CAD 116,064 INR 77.74 Lakhs
  • Spring 2024 UBC Okanagan graduates recorded a 100% first-time NCLEX-RN pass rate, matching the top public nursing schools in Canada.
  • BC health authorities (Interior Health, Vancouver Coastal, Fraser) treat UBC BSN as a preferred recruitment pipeline for acute and community roles.
  • Weekend and night shift premiums typically add CAD 2.25 to 6.25 per hour under the BCNU collective agreement.

Read More: UBC Placement Outcomes and Employers

ROI reality: A UBC BSN graduate on Step 1 recoups the four-year tuition of roughly INR 1.45 Crore in about 32 to 36 months of full-time RN work in British Columbia, ignoring living costs.

Canada Visa Pathway for UBC BSN Students

Indian applicants need a Canada Study Permit before landing at Vancouver International and are eligible for the fast-tracked SDS (Student Direct Stream) route. UBC issues the Letter of Acceptance once the enrolment deposit is paid, and IRCC recommends applying four to six months before the September start.

  • Study Permit fee is CAD 150 (INR 10,047); biometrics add CAD 85 (INR 5,693) per applicant.
  • Processing under SDS runs about 8 to 12 weeks as of the February 2026 IRCC benchmark for Indian passport holders.
  • Nursing programs require an IRCC upfront medical exam before the co-op work permit for clinical placements is issued.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after the four-year BSN grants up to three years of open work authorisation across Canada.
  • Registered Nurse is on the BC Provincial Nominee Program priority list, cutting the PR timeline for BSN graduates to roughly 18 to 24 months after registration.
  • Spouses of full-time BSN students qualify for an open Spousal Work Permit for the study duration.

Also Check: Canada PGWP Rules and Duration

Visa reality: UBC BSN sits within the field-of-study list that keeps the PGWP intact after the 2024-25 IRCC eligibility cuts, so nursing remains one of the most PR-friendly Canadian degrees for Indian students.

The University of British Columbia BSN Ranking 2027

UBC nursing is ranked inside the global top 20 by QS, one of only two Canadian nursing schools to hold that band alongside the University of Toronto. The subject-level rankings matter more than the overall UBC number when licensing bodies and Canadian employers screen candidates.

Ranking Body (Year) UBC Nursing / Health Position Canada Rank
QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 (Nursing) 22 globally 2 in Canada
THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026 (Medical and Health) 31 globally 2 in Canada
QS World University Rankings 2026 (overall UBC) 45 globally 3 in Canada
THE World University Rankings 2026 (overall UBC) 45 globally 2 in Canada

Check Out: UBC Global and Subject Rankings 2026

Honest take: The QS 16 nursing rank carries more weight with Canadian health authorities than UBCs overall QS 40, so BSN graduates are recruited well above the average signal of the wider university brand.

The UBC Bachelor of Science in Nursing suits Indian applicants who have already completed 48 university credits and want a direct pipeline to a Canadian RN licence rather than a research degree. The one decision-driver is the QS 16 subject rank paired with an open PGWP and BC PNP priority stream, which together turn a four-year INR 1.45 Crore outlay into a repayable investment inside three years of BC salary.

UBC BSN FAQs

Ques. Can Indian students apply to the UBC Bachelor of Science in Nursing?

Ans. International students can apply to the UBC Okanagan BSN Basic Program, which admits new international undergraduates each September. The Vancouver campus 20-month accelerated BSN is restricted to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and refugees only, so Indian applicants must select the Okanagan campus.

Ques. How much does the UBC BSN cost for international students in Indian Rupees?

Ans. The 2026-27 international tuition is CAD 1,720.94 per credit or roughly CAD 51,628.20 per full-time year, which converts to approximately INR 34.58 Lakhs per year at CAD 1 = INR 66.98. With UBCs 3% annual tuition cap and mandatory ancillary fees, a full four-year BSN totals close to INR 1.45 Crore before living expenses.

Ques. What English test score does UBC require for the BSN?

Ans. UBC applies its central English Language Admission Standard to Nursing, so an IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 is the working minimum. Accepted alternatives are TOEFL iBT 90 (on the 0 to 120 scale) or 4.5 (on the new 1.0 to 6.0 scale), Duolingo 125, PTE 65, or CAEL 70, all from a single test sitting.

Ques. Are IMES and other UBC scholarships available for BSN students?

Ans. The International Major Entrance Scholarship, Outstanding International Student Award, Global Elevation Award, and International Welcome Award are all open to BSN applicants and considered automatically at admission. UBCs International Scholars Program tier is the one large award category that excludes the Bachelor of Nursing.

Ques. Can UBC BSN graduates get permanent residency in Canada?

Ans. Registered Nurses sit on the BC Provincial Nominee Program priority list and Express Entry pool, giving UBC BSN graduates a PR timeline of roughly 18 to 24 months after NCLEX-RN registration. The four-year BSN also qualifies for the full three-year Post-Graduation Work Permit, which is well over the 12 months of Canadian work experience typically needed for the PR path.

Hello. I am Grace Idachaba from Nigeria. I have completed my bachelors of science in Nursing (4 year course) in Norther Cyprus. I graduated in July of 2023. I have no other experience apart from the internship placements we had during our time in school. This is due to the language barrier we face here (Turkish). Am I still elidgible to apply for the MSc in Nursing program at UBC?
