Simon Fraser University Master of Science Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Admission
SFU accepts applications on a rolling basis with three annual intake deadlines. Each term begins in January, May, or September. Most applicants target the Fall intake for thesis project continuity.
| Intake Term | Application Deadline | Program Start | Typical Decision Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 (Primary for Thesis) | 1 October 2026 | January 2027 | 4-6 weeks |

Academic Eligibility: You must hold a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related life science. Minimum cumulative GPA is 3.0 out of 4.33 (76%). Applicants with weaker transcripts (2.8-2.99 GPA / 69-74%) may gain admission if research experience or strong letters of reference offset the gap. Indian applicants commonly present dual-degree qualifications recognized by WES (World Education Services).
English Language Proficiency Requirements
All international students whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency via one of these accepted tests. SFU accepts multiple formats to support diverse test-taking accessibility.
| English Test | Minimum Overall Score | Component Minimums | Validity Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 88 (old) and 4.5 (new) | Reading 20, Writing 20, Speaking 18, Listening 18 | 2 years |

- IELTS is the most accessible choice for Indian applicants with competitive prep timelines of 8-12 weeks.
- TOEFL iBT component minimums are higher than typical MBA programmes; prioritise Speaking and Writing practice.
- Duolingo offers rapid online testing (results in 48 hours) at lower cost than IELTS or TOEFL.
- Cambridge English Qualification never expires, valuable if considering long-term Canadian pathways.
Critical Supervisor Requirement: You must identify and secure written commitment from a faculty member in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry before submitting your application. This supervisor has agreed to consider your application for thesis direction. Faculty specialise in molecular genetics, cancer biology, cell signalling, protein biochemistry, and developmental biology. Review the department’s research profiles on the SFU website; contact potential supervisors by email at least 4 weeks before the application deadline.
Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Science is ranked globally in molecular biology research. The university’s overall ranking places it among Canada’s top comprehensive research institutions with strong international reputation in life sciences.
Honest Take for Indian Applicants: The supervisor-first requirement means your application success depends heavily on research fit and supervisor availability, not just GPA and test scores. Plan this component 6-8 weeks before your deadline.
Simon Fraser University Master of Science Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Scholarships
SFU offers limited merit-based scholarships for international graduate students. Most funding comes through graduate assistantships (TA/RA positions worth CAD 5,000 to CAD 12,000 per term) and faculty research grants.
| Funding Source | Amount (CAD) | Amount (INR) | Frequency & Eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Research Assistantship (RA) | CAD 5,000-12,000 | INR 3.41-8.18 Lakhs | Per term; secured through supervisor |
| Graduate Teaching Assistantship (TA) | CAD 3,000-6,000 | INR 2.04-4.09 Lakhs | Per term; department allocation |
| Faculty Research Grants (Partial Tuition Coverage) | CAD 2,000-5,000 | INR 1.36-3.41 Lakhs | Merit-based; varies by supervisor funding |
| International Graduate Entrance Scholarship | CAD 3,000 (one-time) | INR 2.04 Lakhs | Select applicants; no application needed |
An RA position worth CAD 10,000 per term (INR 6.81 Lakhs) covers approximately 60% of your annual tuition and living costs combined. Most research master’s students secure RA support within their first term as their thesis work constitutes funded research.
Scholarship Reality: Unlike undergraduate scholarships, graduate support is built into supervisor research budgets. Ask your potential supervisor about RA/TA availability before confirming your application.

Simon Fraser University Master of Science Molecular Biology and Biochemistry FAQs
Ques. Do I need research experience to apply for the MSc Molecular Biology at SFU?
Ans. Research experience strengthens your application significantly but is not formally required. A minimum 3.0 GPA in a BSc and confirmed supervisor agreement are essential. Indian applicants without formal research internships can substitute strong letters from undergraduate labs or capstone project supervision.
Ques. Can I find a supervisor after I apply, or must I secure one before submitting?
Ans. You must identify a supervisor and obtain written agreement BEFORE submitting your application. This is non-negotiable. Once you have supervisor confirmation, your application is formally submitted. Departmental matching after acceptance is rare and unreliable.
Ques. How long is the MSc Molecular Biology at SFU and when should I expect to graduate?
Ans. The programme is typically 2 years full-time. Most students complete thesis research by month 20-22 and graduate in their second calendar year. Some thesis-heavy projects extend to 2.5 years if additional data collection is needed.
Ques. What is the acceptance rate for international applicants from India in the MSc programme?
Ans. SFU does not publish specific acceptance rates by nationality for this programme. Broadly, competitive international applicants have 3.2+ GPAs, strong English test scores, and supervisor alignment. Indian applicants comprise 15-20% of the cohort based on anecdotal reports.
Ques. Can I work while pursuing the MSc, or is the programme full-time only?
Ans. The MSc is full-time and research-intensive; most students are funded via RA or TA positions totalling 20 hours/week. External employment is possible but not recommended during intensive thesis phases (months 12-24). Discuss workload with your supervisor before committing to outside jobs.

- Having to attend in person for tedious things like handing in specific assignments. Because of my long commute this was not ideal for me
I wanted to stay in the lower mainland. Enrollment included a fee, questions to be answered in paragraph form about why I want to be a student at SFU, as well as grades entered from grade 10-12. I prepared myself online. I did not enjoy my experience overall, the campus was very cold, dark, not inviting. The students were extremely competitive as it was a pre med school major so making friends was very difficult. The faculty treated everyone like a number aside from their favorites, the courses were very difficult and detail orientated.
