4.1 Cost-Saving Strategies for Indian Students
UdeM charges tuition on a per-credit basis at the undergraduate level and on a per-trimester basis at the graduate level. Indian students fall under the international student category and pay base tuition plus supplementary fees as set by the Quebec government.
For international students admitted from Autumn 2020 onwards, the fee is CAD $995.89 per credit, which amounts to CAD $14,938.35 for 15 credits (one semester) and CAD $29,876.70 for 30 credits (a full academic year).
| Study Load | Credits | Tuition per Trimester (CAD) | Tuition per Trimester (INR) | Annual Tuition CAD (30 credits) | Annual Tuition INR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-Time | 15 credits | CAD $14,938.35 | ₹10.27 Lakhs | CAD $29,876.70 | ₹20.54 Lakhs |
| Half-Time | 7–8 credits | CAD ~$7,967 | ₹5.48 Lakhs | CAD ~$15,934 | ₹10.96 Lakhs |
| Per Credit | 1 credit | CAD $995.89 | ₹68,479 | - | - |
Key Insight: UdeM undergraduate tuition at CAD $29,876.70/year (₹20.54 Lakhs) is significantly lower than peer universities in Ontario, British Columbia, or any US private university. The crucial prerequisite for Indian students is French proficiency at B2 level, which opens access to over 250 undergraduate programs.
UdeM distinguishes between two types of Master's programs: research-based (with thesis) and non-research (coursework/internship/directed work/DESS/microprogram) - and fees differ accordingly. All figures are per trimester for full-time international students.
For international students at the graduate level (2nd cycle), the fee for a non-research master's (stage, travail dirigé, DESS, microprogram) is CAD $11,328.90 per trimester full-time (base CAD $1,513.35 + supplementary CAD $9,815.55). For a research-based master's (with thesis/mémoire), it is CAD $10,363.35 per trimester full-time (base CAD $1,513.35 + supplementary CAD $8,850.00).
| Master's Type | Per Trimester CAD | Per Trimester INR | Annual (3 trimesters) CAD | Annual (3 trimesters) INR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Non-Research Master's (DESS / Coursework / Internship) | CAD $11,328.90 | ₹7.79 Lakhs | CAD $33,986.70 | ₹23.37 Lakhs |
| Research Master's (With Thesis / Mémoire) | CAD $10,363.35 | ₹7.12 Lakhs | CAD $31,090.05 | ₹21.38 Lakhs |
| Half-Time - Non-Research | CAD $5,664.45 | ₹3.89 Lakhs | - | - |
| Half-Time - Research | CAD $5,181.73 | ₹3.56 Lakhs | - | - |
| Per Credit - Non-Research | CAD $755.26 | ₹51,939 | - | - |
| Per Credit - Research | CAD $690.89 | ₹47,517 | - | - |
Note: For writing (rédaction) sessions, the fee is CAD $538.24 for Autumn 2025 and Winter 2026, and CAD $503.35 for Summer 2026, significantly lower than regular session tuition.
Key Insight: A 2-year research Master's (4 full-time trimesters + writing sessions) at UdeM can cost approximately CAD $41,990-$45,315 total tuition before the Exemption Scholarship — dramatically lower than comparable programs in the UK or USA. The UdeM Exemption Scholarship further reduces this by CAD $11,004-$15,452 per year for eligible students.
For international PhD students (3rd cycle), the full-time trimester fee is CAD $9,302.40 (base CAD $1,513.35 + supplementary CAD $7,789.05). At half-time, the fee is CAD $4,651.20 per trimester. Per credit, the rate is CAD $620.16.
| PhD Status | Per Trimester CAD | Per Trimester INR | Annual (3 trimesters) CAD | Annual (3 trimesters) INR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-Time | CAD $9,302.40 | ₹6.40 Lakhs | CAD $27,907.20 | ₹19.19 Lakhs |
| Half-Time | CAD $4,651.20 | ₹3.20 Lakhs | - | - |
| Per Credit | CAD $620.16 | ₹42,647 | - | - |
| Writing Session (Rédaction) | CAD $538.24 | ₹37,014 | - | - |
Key Insight: The UdeM Exemption Scholarship provides a full waiver of the supplementary international fees for PhD students (CAD $23,367.15/year OR ₹16.07 Lakhs/year), bringing PhD effective tuition to Quebec domestic rates. This makes University of Montreal PhD one of the most financially accessible research doctorates in Canada for Indian students.

|---|---|---|
| Application Fee (base + per program) | CAD $106.75 | ₹7,341 |

| Graduation fee (one-time) | CAD $69.72 | ₹4,795 |
| Late payment interest (if fees not paid on time) | 10.75% per annum | - |
Important Note: The biggest costs Indian students underestimate are the French language preparation expenses and the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) processing time. The CAQ must be obtained before the Study Permit, adding an extra step not required in other Canadian provinces. Budget at least 4–5 months between receiving your Letter of Acceptance and your program start date for the full immigration process.
For Indian students who are willing to invest in French language preparation, Université de Montréal offers an exceptionally strong academic and financial proposition.
The main consideration is French. Unlike English-medium Canadian universities, UdeM requires B2 French for undergraduate admission and most Master's programs.
For research-focused Indian students at the Master's or PhD level in particular, UdeM's combination of world-class research infrastructure, over CAD $8 million in annual student financial support, and the lowest effective international tuition in its peer group makes it one of the most compelling destinations in Canada.

10/10 for courses and industrial exposure is quite good, since it is in Montreal which is a tech hub especially or AI startups. This year the internship fairs were a bit lack luster but I supposed its the same everywhere considering how bad the job market is right now. But I have heard from past students that its generally very good. I got a good internship and so did quite a few of my friends so its definitely not an issue.
27 992,70 CAD $/ year : this is without scholarship for Professional MSc. , research MSc. is fully funded.
It's great. The flexibility and freedom to choose subjects and select electives is what attracted me the most. The fcaulty is world class and the interaction with th real business world through conferences and talks is amazing.
It was ranked #1 for my course. The structure of the course is very flexible and the strategic management subject is ranked highest in Europe. It was a short path to entering the business world because MBA requires work ex, and MiM doesn't.
Course syllabus is extremely rigorous and well rounded. The syllabus is updated and clearly is shaped to accomodate newer research. Also takes into consideration the background of the subject.
For PhD it is $ 27,000 CAD but with scholarship it can go down considerably and sometimes it's fully funded.
The curriculum is very broad with many elective courses which are designed as per industry demand. Also, you will get a chance to work for the industry as the paid internship is mandatory for this course
The total fee was 30000 CAD for the course.
I like the Course Curriculum, although some mandatory class is not something that I am interested in. A class that has Canadian politics and history as it's subject is not my thing (I prefer the international domain).
It is around 1600 (all included) for 5 classes. The insurance is around 350 for the whole year. You are charged by the semester and not yearly.
Really good, takes you through all the basics for the first year and then allows you to choose the classes you would enjoy taking for the second and third year. It allows students to have a thorough and steady learning path.
Tuition around 2000$, other charges such as law books and jurisprudence, and a laptop is a necessity.
It is a balanced program that allows students to acquire a wide range of skills. With a Bachelor of Business Administration, people can enter the world of work with confidence. There is also a lot of free time.
It costs around CAD 9000$ for Canadian and French students, less for Quebec students and more for the rest of the international students.
