Concordia University Master of Arts (MA) English is a two-year, 45-credit graduate degree emphasizing literary analysis, creative writing, and professional composition. The program accepts international students for Fall (September) and Winter (January) intakes. Total program cost is CAD 52,200 (INR 35.59 Lakhs) for international students. Minimum eligibility requires a bachelor’s degree and English proficiency (TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.5). The program prepares graduates for editorial, publishing, and content-focused careers.

Ideal applicants combine strong academic writing, demonstrated passion for literature or creative practice, and clarity on career direction toward publishing, education, or communications roles.

  • Flexible thesis or portfolio options; tailor your research focus to your professional goals.
  • Located in Montreal, Canada’s second-largest city with thriving literary and publishing communities.
  • Graduates secure roles as editors, writing instructors, policy analysts, and content strategists.

Current Admission Status

Master of Arts (MA) English FAQs

Ques. Can I study part-time or switch between thesis and non-thesis options?

Ans. Concordia MA English offers both thesis-based and course-based pathways; choose at admission based on your research interests and career goals. Most students complete full-time over two years, but part-time study is possible with reduced course loads per semester and extended timeline approval.

Ques. What is the job market like for MA English graduates in Canada?

Ans. Placement is strong (80%+ within 6 months): editorial, publishing, corporate communications, and government policy roles readily hire MA graduates. Toronto and Montreal have the largest publishing sectors. Competition exists for coveted editorial positions, but policy analyst and content strategist roles are increasingly abundant.

Ques. Do I need to know French to study at Concordia in Montreal?

Ans. No. Concordia is an English-language university; all instruction, administration, and student services are in English. However, basic French (A1–A2 level) is socially useful in Montreal; many neighbourhoods and cultural venues operate in French.

Ques. Are Indian students competitive applicants for Concordia MA English?

Ans. Yes. Indian applicants with strong English writing samples, IELTS 6.5+, and a GPA of 6.5+ on the 10-point scale are competitive. A clear statement of purpose and high-quality references are weighted heavily; the program values diversity of perspective and strong writing ability over GPA alone.

Ques. How much can I work as an international student, and will a TA/RA position help with costs?

Ans. International MA students can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during scheduled breaks under Canadian study permit rules. TA/RA positions (10 hours per week) offer CAD 5,000–8,000 per term—a meaningful offset—and provide valuable teaching and research experience valued by employers.
