What Students Say
Likes
- The research rigour and work culture
- The EDI culture of the university
- Scope to work on multidisciplinary research
Course Curriculum
- The course syllabus is very relevant and modern
- I am given ample research experiences via my coursework and lab engagements
- I had two classes a day, 2 days of the week, scheduled at 11 am and 3:30 pm. While working as a TA, we may need to take labs from 5-8 pm
- Depends on the course. Graduate-level courses have about 10-15 students in a class, while courses that are combined grad/undergrad have over 100 students in the class
Admission Experience
- I chose the University of Alberta because the professor I wanted to work under works here. My experience in one year has been great. As an Indian student, it did not take me too long to adjust to the Canadian education system.
- UofA funds my graduate studies via a stipend system, which covers my education fees as well as my living costs, and that was very appealing to me
- I cold emailed the professors and found the right fit for myself, lab-wise and project-wise. I had to interview with my current supervisor before applying, as that helped me cement my admission to the UofA.
Faculty
- I am not sure about the ratio, but the faculty are extremely well-versed and approachable.

- The campus life is very good, and you will get ample opportunities to meet and connect with an international crowd. There is a lot of support and scope for extracurricular activities, and the research facilities are state-of-the-art.
Part Time Jobs
- I am not too sure about off and on-campus jobs, but every graduate student works as a TA during the fall and winter semesters and as an RA during the summer.
Placement
- You can work in the industry in research or technical roles.
Accommodation
- I found my accommodation via Facebook Marketplace. The monthly rent for me is 875 CAD without utilties and my facilities include a gym, tennis court, basketball court, and squash court.
